I also new a phenomenal guitar player in the area who worked out a lot of Gary Richrath's guitar solo, that Gary used in Flying Turkey Trot. The band came together at the University of Illinois in Champaign / Urbana IL. Good stuff, but there were a lot of amazing bands getting a lot of radio time back then. We (Central Illinois young folk, at the time ha ha) were all just proud that one of our local jam bands made it into radio air time across the country.

My son recently asked me for a list of my favorite songs. He's lived in Spain for most of his life and I've been mostly here in the states, so we probably don't know each other as well as we should. Recently something happened and he wants pictures and some other things from me. When it came to my list of favorite songs, I hesitated a moment when I had to decide to add this song to my all time favorites list. I know it has a commercial element to it and it is anything but the usual metal-type of music I listen to, but in the end I just had to include it. It's a song that is endlessly joyous, positive and up lifting. I had to give him that. And it truly deserves to be on my list of greatest of all time.
@Jessica_Roth Жыл бұрын
Not only is Kevin playing the piano here, he actually taught himself to play the acoustic piano in order to write the song. (He had been the rhythm guitarist before this.) I would love for you to dive into the double-live album "You Get What You Play For", because as fine as REO is on the studio versions, the reason the label stayed with them through all the changing vocalists and albums that didn't sell was because they were a *KILLER* live band. You think Gary Richrath plays an amazing guitar? Wait until you hear him live. And live shows make you appreciate what a great drummer Alan Gratzer is, because he never lets the energy flag. (Alan retired in 1987. His replacement, Brian Hitt, is pretty good, but he tends to get languid. Gratzer never does.) Plus since the live album came before this, the only song on it that you have heard is "Ridin' the Storm Out". Start at the beginning with "Like You Do" and just keep going all the way through to "Golden Country" (my favorite) at the end. UNSTOPPABLE.

Now you MUST react to the last song on the album..."Say You Love Me Or Say Goodnight!" It's a Rock 'n' Roll freight train running off of the tracks!!! I KNOW you'll love it! And one of their lesser known albums came right after the "...Tuna Fish" album..."Nine Lives"... it wasn't nearly a successful, but has some gems... and was recorded with a "live in the studio" sound. Try "Heavy On Your Love" and "Back On the Road Again", which actually features bassist Bruce Hall on vocals... and it rocks!

When it comes to guitar heroes, nobody ever mentions Gary Richrath, but he had a sound and style all his own - very underrated!
Something we only get with 70's rock would be Hammond organs, tambourines and back-up singers. It'd be awesome if a band (a good band....not like today's offerings) would emerge using the "tools of their forebearers".

REO was one of the best live bands I ever saw and I have been to hundreds of concerts. Back in the 1970's and 80's the only way you could get a bands tee shirt was if you attended the concert and bought the shirt there. We had a thing going to see who could collect the most band tee shirts and ticket stubs. Yes we saved all of our ticket stubs and put them into a concert scrap book. It was the thing to do back then. Sometimes I would attend several in one week.
