These “bans” are actually just age limitations. Like how tv shows, movies, and video games have age appropriate ratings. My 11 year old was assigned a book with graphic depictions of sex. That’s inappropriate for that age. Also, it just isn’t necessary. There is so much literature to choose from. There is no reason for schools to assign these books. What I’m seeing in my district is they’ve stopped teaching classic literature and are assigning modern books and graphic novels with no literary value that have sex and profanity in an effort to “appeal to the kids who don’t like reading.” Their words, not mine. That’s disturbing. If you have a kid who can’t read and is over sexualized for their age, they need a therapist and possibly a visit from CPS.

Even adult readers have a hard time reading classics since they were written during a different time period for a different society. It's not hard to imagine why kids forced to read them would not enjoy them. Modern-day literature tells stories about our world TODAY and issues these kids will face as they grow. So don't say they don't have literary substance just bc you amd your parents didn't grow up with them. The only way books become classics is by people reading them, and there is always room for new ones.
