I have the same question, Ari: how can so many senators sell their souls to keep a JOB? And, ironically, they are already abdicating their job by being too scared to DO it. It's not like they'll be living under a bridge if they lose an election; most of them have plenty of options and are frequently in great shape financially. Lots and lots of people are NOT senators.

If you put every ATC on 40 hour work-weeks, you'd need 21,000 ATCs just to cover those 5,000 airports. There are currently 14,000 ATCs. This 'insufficient staff' refrain when discussing ATCs *is woefully understating the situation!* With 14,000 ATCs, you'd need every single one working 60 hours per week, just to keep those 5,000 airports running.
