I think part of your problem is that you used VARNISH instead of matte MEDIUM. Varnish would go on top after, but the medium works for the toothiness to work with it. I use mine with an airbrush but it also works painting it on. Package says 25% water. Hope this helps! Love your face ups

Good point... but does using the matte medium make it shiny in the end? Because I’m comfortable using acrylic paints instead of pencils if I have to I just really don’t want a shiny finish, any tips?😊
@InnocentGuillotine5 жыл бұрын
Holly Rusher It will almost certainly be shinier when dabbed/painted on than applied with an airbrush, just because the application method leaves it less... bumpy, for lack of a better phrasing. There's a less even refraction from many tiny drops forming a coat versus a sponged on coat.

Varnishes only do well as a way of putting a final seal on the doll's faceup. Try using a matt medium next time to seal your doll's bare face, and you'll find you'll get that tooth and texture you need to do faceups, and just use the vanish to seal it all in! Good luck!

Hey there! We live in Pennsylvania and have no MSC anywhere, So we got Matte Varnish. We're starting up our first 3 dolls. But had not started with the faces. We don't even have the proper sealant at the stores. All we have is Krylon and they have Aceton in it. Weird ingredient choice for a "Sealant". So in the mean time, We used glitter glue and surprisingly, It kept the paint and pastels on the doll's body very well. Yeah, It's alittle stiff in the joints, But it works well... so far. It's a good back up sealant when you don't have the big tools. Wonder if it works well with Watercolor pencils? Well, The glue when dried is rough some how... We could be wrong. So Don't yell at us! We have very little allowance and it's hard to find the right sealant (And Dolls) these days. It's all we have!

I know this is an old video, but I just want to say that it's really nice to see folks looking for cheaper, safer alternatives that are more readily available to a larger array of users. I don't do doll customizing, rather, I repaint action figures and Gunpla in my spare time, but the Mister line is still highly prevalent and there's a lot of back and forth about consistent quality over time vs the toxicity and availability. This might not work as well on a vinyl doll, but when I was working on my Siege Megatron, I used a Krylon spray acrylic matte top coat that work spectacularly for providing a very flat finish that had a subtle tooth not unlike very fine sketch paper. It allowed me to utilize some very nice dry brushing techniques I was having trouble with before sealing, and it's definitely something I'm going to keep using for future projects. There's also the option of using products like Mod Podge, but that can be argued to be a non-archival finish due to the fact that you can reactivate Mod Podge with sufficient water exposure, so using the material would depend heavily on your intended use of the figure. In any case, good job on this repaint, Rochelle looks super cute!

I really like this face up, it's a nice change from the MSC heavy versions I see around. I work mostly on action figures rather than fashion dolls, but I confront similar issues with tooth and sealing, and I usually use mostly really fine sandpaper and translucent acrylic enamel paint for most of my work. I've yet to figure out a real "tried and true" method that works 100% of the time for me, so seeing all these alternatives is really refreshing and gives me LOTS of ideas.

msc is super hard to get here where I live (Colombia) so I found an alternative, there's a matte spray used for sealing pastel and water colors made for artists so try to look for something like that, it worked for me
@selenabonilla22817 жыл бұрын
Miguel Nivia she won't find it , if you do not provide the name of it and which company makes it, which should be on your spray. Make it easier for her, and provide full information.

What is it called, and where can you get it? Ive never found a sealant that keeps the face up matte and protected like MSC. I’d like to know about this

Hola! Tambien soy de Colombia y quería saber cual es la marca que usas, compre un sellante, pero deja todo demasiado brillante y no funciona bien ;;;;;

Y cómo se llama? Yo soy de Chile y me gustaría empezar a customizar muñecas pero dudo que encuentre msc acá

I come from the future to tell you I found a spray matte varnish that doesn't react weirdly with the vinyl. I honestly didn't have much hope on it, but since I'm a newbie and MSC and Liquitex varnish are kinda expensive here, I gave it a try. Best thing out of all is that it's actually very cheap.

I am going to do some Steven Universe custom dolls for a friend.Do you all think the pencils would work on a fully painted face?
@WhydoINeedAHandleAgain698 жыл бұрын
Clod As long as there is another coat of MSC or another sealer, I think it would be fine.
@clod33758 жыл бұрын
Thanks!
@WhydoINeedAHandleAgain698 жыл бұрын
Clod Just make sure that you use watercolor pencils. Oil based pencils would make your piece permanently sticky. Best of luck!

I love you for this! I live in an apartment with no individual entrance, so using MSC is a HUGE pain!! It's nice to know there are options out there, even if they aren't as good
@ArloTheSilver5 жыл бұрын
If you ever decide to try this again, may I suggest Krylon matte finish? I’ve been using it as a sealant since I can’t afford a ventilation mask for MSC and it’s been doing a good job for me
@SalaciousScorpio697 жыл бұрын
Rochelle's new face is so pretty! I might have to try this method sometime.
@KewneRain8 жыл бұрын
Nicolle's Dreams uses Liquitex-brand brush-on sealants, you might give those if you're looking for a non-toxic alternative.
@Dollightful8 жыл бұрын
I've seen her use it with an airbrush before, but I don't have an airbrush, hehe.
@KewneRain8 жыл бұрын
Well they are marketed as "brush on" I assume that means you could use them with a standard brush. I build model kits and I personally prefer results over safety (although I also live in a suburb so I have the ability to use rattle cans basically anywhere any time, so I can understand the need for safety in a non-toxic alternative)

I don't have access to MSC so I have tried several different sealants to work with watercolour pencils. Matt varnish -no. Fixative -no. Matt lacquer -kinda but gives shiny and bumpy skin. So I use acrylic paints but it hasn't occurred to me to use sealant with them. I have to try this watered down technique! Thank you for sharing this experiment!

AWWW her first eyebrows were so precious tho D: It was cool to see pretty, bushy eyebrows on a doll :D
@partyinthecloudkingdom8 жыл бұрын
maybe the varnish tooth/pencil problems are because you watered it down so much?
@Foxwish32218 жыл бұрын
Cloud King it would make it a lot shinier, as opposed to more matte
@KymeraBJD8 жыл бұрын
Cloud King I think a lot of the shinyness and lack of tooth is caused by the sponge/brush application - you're applying thicker layers in general. Even MSC will get shiny if you overspray. Much of the tooth comes from how the sealant is atomized when sprayed from an airbrush or can.
@ZangelDemon6 жыл бұрын
I didn't know it was the spraying action that gives it tooth! Thank you for sharing that!
