You're like the Bob Ross of pinball repair painters. You even have a steady hand painting the black edge lines. Very much impressed by that!

I'm going to do a video one day of the people that influenced me in the back of my mind when I started doing youtube videos, he's one of them. Bob Ross, Mr. Rogers, The Woodright's shop Roy Underhill, and a local to Charlotte radio guy named John Hancock.

I heard a master painter once teach that a good painter can always pick up a brush, but a great painter knows when to put it down. The most amazing artists know how to embrace imperfection and when it comes to drawing and other arts, that's something I just can't do.

What a fantastic result. Really outstanding work. Each destroyed playfield offers up a unique set of problems/issues. There is no ‘one size fits all’ solution to restoring a tired, beaten up playfield. You’ve got to make it up as you go along a fair bit of the time. Just excellent work. As you said, most folks would have parted this game out. You have saved it, and it’s now ready to rock for decades to come. Very enjoyable video Ron and Joe. Thanks for posting.

Have you ever tried wood restoring products for the bare wood that is damaged like on this machine? I know they don't always work well, but sometimes it can bring that staining around. The sanding does help a lot to blend it in and made a huge difference :) The thing I love about your restorations is that you do know when to stop and leave alone. The clear and rewaxing tends to help everything blend. I think the game has a story to tell, and if you do too much it loses its history and the story is lost with it.
@IAmTheShaz Жыл бұрын
Definitely a 10! I'm shocked how the wood repair paint job totally blends in once the arch was put back up top. To me it looks 100% natural like the rest of the bare wood areas up there. Fantastic job!

Yes. A 10 for sure. I had a Gottlieb 2001 that had even worse mouse damage that had to the have entire woodgrain part of the lower playfield painted the same way you did. I was happy with the final result and found it wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. You did a fine job showing people how to get that effect. FWIW that woodgrain color paint job is easier to make look good than most light solid colors.

I must confess, up until a couple of years ago (I'm in my 40s), I had no idea who Bob Ross was, it was some American friends that told me about him. He just wasn't a thing here in Western Australia when I was growing up. FTA here was basically Aussie shows and British shows with some American shows thrown in (Such as "You Can't Do That On Television", and "Square One Television").
@LyonsArcade Жыл бұрын
He was in the military, and his commander was always yelling at him (he had an office job in the military) or had that drill Sargent vibe. So his calm demeanor on the show was a reaction to that. He would get a lunch break for 30 minutes, and would go out in the parking lot and set up an easel, and got good enough that he could be finished before his lunch break was over. Then he'd sell the pictures to earn a little extra money. of course that perfectly trained him to be the perfect television painter, weird how things work like that.

It's looking great there Ron.i had one question for you Ron and correct me as well. I was thinking when you were sanding the playfield in the upper left hand corner. Couldn't you use like an oscillating tool where you're using like a blade with some double sided tape and some fine grip sandpaper. Cause I know myself having sausage fingers for small spaces. And just gently sand away what needs to be removed. It's like those professional painters painting a car. Or Ross painting but in sanding. But it's a job ŵell done. I'm proud of you there.😊

Great work, as always. Now, the one shadowy spot on the right would keep pulling my eye if I were to play it. That said, I know you have to have a cutoff point somewhere. If it were me, and if it weren't for the tax sticker, I'd use white epoxy appliance enamel on the arch. That is tricky paint to work with. You'd have to get all your layers done in 20 minutes or whatever, or you'd have to wait a week. That makes reassembly take longer since you'd need a week to reassemble the parts painted with that (unless you have a very delicate touch.

That's a good call, considering the whole playfield had crazing, paint loss, etc. Doing the whole thing will lock down what is there and preserve it from further deterioration. You can indeed do more paint touchups over your first clearcoat.. clear coat again, and it'll pop nicely.

Your color matching skills are bananas, but I will never understand why you don’t use a machinist rule and a French curve for your line work.
@LyonsArcade Жыл бұрын
Because it's wet paint. You can't use a ruler on wet paint... .you would do much better, but you would take 10 times longer and then have to tell the customer "Hey that piece of crap game you brought me, I repainted this small area at the top, it took 10 hours to get straight so we'll start out with that part costing 700 bucks" and that would be the end of your playfield painting business. OR, you go the best you can, paint the stuff on, draw the lines on it by hand, spray some clear and keep on keeping on. Only downside is people on youtube tell you you don't know what you're doing or they can draw lines better than you can.
@Jason-lx3zu Жыл бұрын
After a cutaway or two my eyes cannot pick up where you repainted. I've fallen into the "search for perfection" trap too many times and you're right Ron, learn to leave well enough alone. Great job fellas, as always!
