The test leads that came with this esr meter is too short with alligator clip. Where did you buy the test leads that you are using in this video? I tried other test leads but the meter is not zeroing out when shorting. I read the reviews on amazon that the problem with this meter not zeroing out if using other test leads is the resistance.

Dude. I just wanted to say you are doing a phenomenal job because you’re explaining what was happening and why. A lot of very nice, knowledgeable technicians do work like this for KZbin and say: “Let’s test this. [beep!] Oh hell yeah that one’s bad. We’ll get a new one and yadda, yadda…” I’m a noob on electronics but not that dumb, and I understood exactly what you did and why. Anyway, thanks.🙏. Easy SUB. 👍

I also took caps from old blown up pc power supply for my hdtv pvr supply I attempted to repair because it was randomly freezing during startup. Of course it may be that old caps have shorter life and if bad luck I have to replace them again soon but I was just too lazy to buy new ones lol

Great tutorial. You can also test the resistance and microhenries of the inductors with the esr meter. The reactance formula is 2𝛑FL. That would be 2 x 3.14 x frequency of esr meter which is 100kHz x 100uH Just plug it in. R=0.628 X L(uH) L(uH)=R(ohms)/0.628

@FunBubble3 жыл бұрын
try banging on it with your fist while its powered on. if it reacts with the vibration then theres a broken/cracked solder joint.
@robc41913 жыл бұрын
If that doesnt work, try de-oxidizing the volume pot and switches. Dirty pot contacts are a very common problem in older electronics.

Are you converting the reading on the meter to another unit of measurement, because for 100 microfarad cap it was reading 1.6 or something and you said it should be less than . 7?
@ulflulfl94644 жыл бұрын
He has an ESR meter that measures the AC resistance, not the capacitance. There are tables what the Elkos ESR should be for specific farrad and voltage values. This way you can measure the Elkos in circuit and don't have to solder each of them out of the board.

@robc41913 жыл бұрын
The caps will have their values printed on the side and you can look up the appropriate ESR in a table.

It would make more sense that once you pull a electrolytic from the board to test, just replace it. I always test them to see if they were really bad mainly out of curiousity, but the hard part is unsoldering, and the price of the caps is next to nothing.

Man.... I really really really really want to become proficient in circuitry...
@LeviBulger Жыл бұрын
It's not technically correct to say the caps are "off spec" since you're reading ESR. It's just that the cap's physical innards went bad somehow and are causing higher than normal resistance in the circuit, preventing adequate voltage to flow through. The caps themselves didn't suddenly change their voltage or capacitance specs/values.😅 And just because they read within good ESR range doesn't always mean they're good caps. You should have explained what ESR means and how it doesn't have much to do with the capacitance but rather resistance since all components are inherently going to give some resistance to an electrical current. Bad caps can still give perfect ESR readings.

I wish everything was as easy as capacitors, those voltage amplifier ic's in sony amps will burn your fingers when running they get so hot, its wise to fit a heatsink too them, once they short they will destroy the darlington transistors, sony in their infinite wisdom decided to not fit heatsinks to these ic's that run at 95c, and the capacitors you fitted are not fit for their purpose, in an audio signal path you need to fit nichicon fine gold if you want your amp to sound good.

Every set of test probes I have won't work with this meter. I just don't get a correct reading. It's a disappointment to be honnest to have spent a lot of money on this meter and it only comes with crocodile clips.
@wickerbill77932 жыл бұрын
I agree, but I clipped the ends of some extra leads I had with probed leads on both ends, not too long in length), to the alligator clips that allowed be to connect to the capacitors much easier than the alligator clips. I only used leads that were no more than 10” in length. If you use too long of leads you’ll get an error read.
