I rented a damper puller and my 350 chev damper was pretty stuck in there it eventually came out but the end of the puller bolt buried itself into the foot of the inner crank treads ( oh god no ) so i'll try to rent a tap set ( now i know how the tool rental makes money ) and clean the treads. I hope it works.

How did you know it was stripped? What were the signs? Also will replacing the bolt and or pulley mess the timing up?
@okcvet1st Жыл бұрын
Every stripped bolt acts differently. They either won't start threading in, feel crossthreaded, seem extremely tight, may try to go in at an angle, etc. Each vehicle is different. The engine in this video was a Ford 5.4. It will not mess up the timing by taking the balancer off. Many are keyed and will go on only one way. If they aren't keyed, it may have a notch for alignment but most likely won't matter how it's reinstalled. If it does have a notch, most procedures call for TDC before removal. But normally I see other markings that refer to TDC. Refer to a repair manual for your exact vehicle to make sure what the procedure is. Thanks for watching!

@@okcvet1st alright, 1 more question: Will over torqueing the bolt ruin or lock up anything?
@okcvet1st Жыл бұрын
@jeremyfahrni529 You always risk ruining, locking up or stripping by over torquing. Most threads accept less torque after a repair and can be damaged more easily. You often have to make a judgment call on how much torque to apply safely.

hi good vid i stripped an 8mm threaded hole out on my harmonic balancer with the pully tool the other day but still managed to get it off, ive never tapped a hole before so, do i go to the next size above is that how it works? p.s. im getting a tap & die set soon from ebay so i hav 2 wait 4 it to arrive!
@okcvet1st5 жыл бұрын
If its just a puller bolt hole, then the easiest thing is to just tap and put a bigger bolt in. If its a hole used to bolt something down like a pulley, I'd try to clean the thread using the same size first and evaluate the information like: how deep is the hole and how much thread is grabbing? Does it feel snug and tight when screwing in the bolt? Will proper torque be able to be applied? If you have little thread, a lose fit, or no torque allowance, a bigger bolt likely needs to be installed. A little locktight might do the trick also. Be careful with bargain tap sets as many aren't strong and you risk breaking the tap inside the hole. Best bet is to really take your time and try not to cause any more work for yourself. Hope this helped! Thanks for watching!

@Pituqat2 жыл бұрын
What if it never gets tight? Does that mean I completely stripped the threads inside the shaft?
@okcvet1st2 жыл бұрын
Most likely yes. Different way to tackle the issue. If your not confident in attempting the repair, take it to a machine shop and ask them to rethread it. If you feel like your able to tackle it, use a good quality drill bit/tap and enlarge it slightly or you could change the pitch/thread pattern of the bolt. Make sure to use a quality bolt also. 8.8 or higher recommend. Basically get the strongest thing you can get. The process isn't a 5 min fix. The crank is hardened and hard to enlarge by hand but it can be done. In the vehicle not alot of room normally, so specialized tools may be needed. I have an angle drill chuck adapter that allows my drill to be vertical while drilling horizontal. Most people don't have one. And I really don't use it often but still have it. I often use different length drill bits also. Short to start drilling and get longer as the hole is drilled deeper. Just depends on how much room I have to work with. You may run into "shops" that'll tell you it can't be fixed, or you have to pull the crank out for them to repair it. Some may say they have to remove the radiator, etc, to do the repair. If a shop has nothing but excuses, they just don't want to do it. May not be the greatest way of fixing it, but sometimes I take the strongest bolt I can find, slightly bigger then the hole, and hammer it in with the impact. Doing it by hand prob won't get it in far enough. Not to say it'll work for you, but sometimes you just do what it takes to get something fixed. Hope I helped out. Thanks for watching!

It had about 3’ total of where it starts to grab inside the snout but they first 2’ are really damaged

It's hard to say without looking at it in person. If a correct sized tap doesn't fix it good enough, you may have to run a slightly bigger tap and install a bigger bolt. If the crank torque rating is high, then running a bigger bolt may be the best option. Many more options can be considered but its really up to you what you think would be best. (Forcing a high grade bolt in with an impact, welding the pulley/damper onto the crank, replacing the crank, welding and retapping the crank, etc.) Hope I helped. Thanks for watching!

I'm trying to tap the crankshaft hole on my 98 civic and the tap will jussssst start to catch and then slip off every time... I'm using a lot of force on the back of the tap but it's making my arm weak. Haha! Any tips on this??
@okcvet1st4 жыл бұрын
What type of tap are you using? May try starting with a good quality taper tap, then move to a plug tap, then finish off using a bottoming tap. Using a spiral flute tap may help also but you'll just have to see what works best. In OKC, I get my taps from J & E Supply and Fastener on 59th and Eastern. If cleaning up the threads doesn't work, you may have to drill it out and use a slightly larger bolt. Self tapping bolts are available also that are hardened to force back in. The 98 civic, if I remember correctly, has good access to the crank bolt. Hope I helped! Thanks for watching!

@@okcvet1st what is the actual size I need for the crank bolt? Can't seem to find anything long enough to go in.
@okcvet1st5 жыл бұрын
@@loboost7094 The oem bolt is right at 2" long but has a 1/4" tip included in the 2" and has the washer on it. The crank hole is approx 2" deep and the balancer has approx 1/8" lip left when torqued down. Depends on how bad your crank is. Sometimes I buy a new oem bolt and it works fine after repairing the threads. Sometimes I use a 2-1/4" 8.8 bolt with threads all the way to the end. Occassionally I have to use a slightly bigger bolt to get it to work, which means you have to run a bigger tap in. Hope I answered your question and helped out. Let me know the end result! Thanks.

You know why it strip? You attempted to drive the pulley in with the crank bolt, and strip it. Common mistake
@okcvet1st2 жыл бұрын
That is a common mistake, but also previous repairs that someone else made the mistake causes this to happen. Then the current person working on it has to deal with it. I use damper/pulley install tools but my video is to show people how to fix the stripped threads because most people don't use the correct tools and can strip it easily.
