I remember when I had a PS2 when I was little, was 7 years old and had the fat model. It lasted for a few years until out of nowhere it not only stopped reading discs but then shortly after wouldn’t even turn on. However, my parents wound up getting my brothers and I a Slim model and that lasted much longer with no problems at all. Definitely the PS2 is a legendary console, it was my first PlayStation ever.

That BA chip is the CD/DVD Driver chip. Those become vulnerable to damage on specific models from reading burned discs as they put extra stress on it. Id pull the modchip as it is indeed a relic then try to get it working with the chip not in there. That was a very cheap chip back in the day. The DMS, and Matrix Infinity chips were the pinnacle. Modbos you'd by from Ali are just matrix clones these days. Re-check all the fuses since you let the smoke out. I have had a few successful repairs to these over the years with similar issues.

Hi there, and thanks for the great info! Will definitely be pulling the modchip and popping in a new BA. Quick question though, as it's been hard to find any solid documentation on this modchip: do you know if there any other modifications to the motherboard (that will also need to be undone) other than the soldered wires? (i.e. jumpered contacts, etc) Thanks again!

Nice vid mate, im not an expert but i like to watch this kind of repair videos. You may wanna remove the broken chip and put some voltage on the board to see if is there any other shorts (overheating components) that may help you to trace any other failed component or maybe you already done it. looking forward for the pt2.

Thank you! Will definitely do that to see if I can track down any other gremlins on that board.

I think that component that smoked out was the RF AMP which drives the laser? The fact it burnout seems really strange, I wonder if the mod chip went faulty and caused damage to the mechacon, Syscon or the drive assembly. Nice video!

Hi there, and thanks for the compliment! I think you might be correct as to the mod chip being the culprit. We'll find out soon enough... well, as soon as I receive the replacement chips... I'm just hoping nothing else is seriously damaged. As much as I realize we need "parts systems", I hate being the one to relegate a piece of hardware to that pile.

You should always remove the modchip first before doing anything else when you have an issue. This was most likely caused by the solder joints coming loose (Or already being shorted when it was installed) and the chip shorting out. The BA5815FM chip was already dead (No display and no eject) so no worries. Even losing the magic smoke usually isn't a big deal. I accidentally shorted out the equivalent chip with my multimeter probe on a PS2 slim and burned a massive hole in it while trying to diagnose no disc spin. Turned out, it was the issue all along, as replacing the burned chip fixed the original issue xD Removing the modchip and replacing the BA5815FM (And the fuse if it's blown) would probably be enough to fix the console in case someone has the same issue

The modchip is over 20 yrs old, it’s the magic 3 modchip, that chip caused major problems back then, remove and replace the BA IC and also the other BA ic for the reset controller
@DiscountSasquatch Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info! Didn't realize that the other BA chip needed to be replaced as well.

@@DiscountSasquatch once the eject light not coming on and no display is shown, the driver IC which is the one next to the laser controls the other IC which is the controller IC they need to change, once that fuse is blown, those two IC need to change

Could be an issue with the 47ohm Resistors near the GS GPU chip.

Iv had a nasty shock from one luckily I only touched the bottom of the board not the capacitor still felt like I was dieing for 3 days now I wear rubber gloves whenever I go near the power supplys lol

Ouch! Glad to hear you're okay, but yep, got to be careful anywhere around mains-level capacitors.

That looks like a magic v7 mod chip. As someone who has doen many ps2 mod chip installs I would call that a verry slopy install. It should be mounted on the qfp chip next to the bios chip and have muchshorter wires and they should be managed with a dot of glue to hold them in place. Also when installing the drive ribon cables its easyer to leave the metal shield with the drive clips off and putting it on after the cables are in.
@DiscountSasquatch29 күн бұрын
Agreed, it's like a caveman installed that chip. Thanks for the tip on reconnecting the cables as well!

Why do you think so?
@DiscountSasquatch Жыл бұрын
Well, pretty sure that's accurate since the chip has a giant scorch hole in it. The question is, did something else along the line cause it to blow?

@DiscountSasquatch did you ever figure out what was burning out the ba chips ? I have the same issue I put a new one almost got a DVD drive to work and it burned the fuse and chip again last night. Removed the chip again to get it working. A short from somewhere else I can't find it yet.

this guy not know what hell is doing, laser´s fuses only envolved laser read disc system and not had nothing between them and video output so is useless try to fix that fuse, display problem could be by video chip GS is desolderied or video capacitors are brooken. one last thing, if you install a modchip this can destroy the console cuz works out of electrical limits and could damage bios or another chips like mechapwn so causes console not works ever more. remove the modchip and turn on console, maybe that can fix it.
@DiscountSasquatch Жыл бұрын
And you're absolutely right about me not knowing what I'm doing. I've never worked on a PS2 before, and am learning along as I go. :) Legit thanks for letting me know that the DVD fuse shouldn't affect the video though. I'll take another look at the video chip and its capacitors to see if I can spot anything on the next follow-up video, though I'm pretty sure that the modchip may have rendered this system a brick at this point.
