This video is a DIY Repair for a few potential problems the Canon EOS 3, 1 and 1N film camera body can have with the BC Error. The video show some things to check on the body first that sometimes resolve some problems these cameras can have. Then if that does not work I also show how to disassemble the camera and get the mirror magnets to start working again. A good beating!
Then also how to reassemble the camera again.
Note: The 1V / 1VHS is disassemble differently so this video will not help for that camera.
Hope this helps someone.

You absolute hero. I went through countless threads online talking about the issue and came to no prevail. My eos 3 had been hidden under my bed for the past year so took it for a spin today, only to find the bc error. Gave the magnet a good tap and off went the shutter! Thank you so much!

This totally worked for my EOS 1! You have to lift the fauz leather either side of the film door release button and there's also a third screw under the leather below the EOS 1 logo on the front. Thank you!

That is brilliant. You are a genius and a hero. My EOS 1n just gave me the dreaded "bc" eroor. I looked on the internet and all of the posts I viewed seem to be from idiots who don't have any idea. Your UTube video is absolutely superb and the camera is working fine. I had to remove the front and encourage the magnet, just as you said. On the EOS 1n the screw near the catch is not accessed via the film compartment but by pulling off the "leather" grip on the front (which also reveals the catch screws). From the posts I gather that Canon dealers replace the main board at a cost of £100+ but it does not give a permanent fix! Todd - thanks for taking the time and trouble to create and post a brilliant video. Bob

Ha ha thanks, I'm glad this helped! Thanks for posting about the hidden screw behind the leatherette, hopefully others will read your comment for help. Hi Todd, thanks so much for this video, I was just about to spend £96 GBP (approx 150 dollars) having this problem investigated but luckily found your video first. My EOS-3 hadn't been used a great deal but had spent the past 10 years in its box thanks to digital. When I got it out and put new batteries in the power drive and it came up with the error I was gutted, but followed your instructions and now working perfect once again, big thank you from bonny Scotland Todd :-)

Thank you for this video! I got this camera for a steal but soon found out it was dead with the BC Error and couldn't find anything online. Some reason this video never popped up for me. Thanks for this video. I had already cleaned all the contacts years ago, nothing seemed to work--and I'll be honest, I didn't take my EOS1 apart to fix it. Once I saw the video and realized where the magnet was located, and that tapping it fixed it, I tapped the body of the camera in that location. (Wooden handle of a paint brush I had sitting next to me). For the first time in three years my old EOS1 began firing and has done so consistently for the past ten minutes. I couldn't believe it. I was planning on trading it in Friday--now I'm loading some film in it and heading out. Thanks again.

Todd Armstrong Well, once again, thanks for this video. When the camera first developed this problem, the internet pretty much indicated it was now a boat anchor. I couldn't bring myself to toss it though--but didn't want to buy another if it was going to have the same problem. It has sat on a shelf as a display for a couple of years until now. KEH is coming to a local camera store this weekend and I thought I'd see how much I'd get for it, gladly I checked the internet once more before letting it go. I recommend the wooden handle of a paint brush over the fist though...LOL.

John Curry Ya I honestly will give that a try. Could even put a thin cloth between as well perhaps to avoid scratching. Thanks for letting me know because this will save time. Ya Keh is great. I sell almost everything on ebay. The trick is to do a Buy It Now only and set the price fairly highish. Then just drop it $10 or so each week. It takes patience but I over double my profit on many items. Auctions are usually a huge loss.

Thank you so much. I've had a dead eos-3 for years that I love but couldn't justify spending on the Canon repair after it failed. I was always reticent to open it up, the cleaning contacts trick never worked. I saw this magnet trick today and the super easy way to try it so I thought why not. And it worked! a gentle tap on the magnet cleared it. You are a hero sir.

@CannonFastReviews
@CannonFastReviews 9 жыл бұрын
Patricia Steffen The only way is to keep shooting it to get everything moving or replace the part. However I have had some people message me saying once they got it initially going if it happens again they just tap it from the outside with a cloth covering the spot and they don't need to dismantle it again. Just a little smack from the outside keeps it going. I have tried this and it worked for most of mine as well. After that it really is just replace the part. I have thought about cutting the white cover and blowing it out or spraying some contact cleaner in it but I haven't tried it yet. Not sure if its worth the trouble.

Thank you! It worked for me. For the screws on the side where the release is for the film insert. The reason why you don't completely unscrew the two is because theres a spring that is packed underneath so if you go too far which i did while putting the cover back on. its bit of an art to get back together.

My EOS 3 sat in the box a long time -- years -- now the dreaded BC error. I set CF-12 to 1. Before opening up, I tried some gentle raps with the back side of my small screwdriver -- right over the magnet spot--and “Voila!” the mirror started flipping up and down with the shutter button. CF-12 back to 0, and all is well. Many thanks!

@CannonFastReviews
@CannonFastReviews 6 жыл бұрын
Personally I wouldn't replace it on these cameras now that they are much cheaper these days. Unless you have a lot of time... You have to tear down the top of the camera all the while being VERY careful not to rip a ribbon which there are quite a few. Then once you get them all disconnected then you have to do a fair bit of digging and soldering to disconnect the part. Its a lot of work. Personally I would sell it for parts and buy another working camera. :)

Todd Armstrong Hi Todd, I have noticed that the problem keeps coming back. I wonder how many times I need to actuate the shutter to clear whatever it is in the magnets once and for all? I read that one person used an exacto knife to remove the white plastic cover from the magnet housing to spray cleaner in there. Do you suppose there is some residue on the magnets?
@CannonFastReviews
@CannonFastReviews 10 жыл бұрын
Claude Batmanghelidj Oh no well I usually put a few hundred clicks on them in high continuous which usually works. I have also heard of cutting the front cover off as well and doing the cleaner thing which might work. I would first put a couple hundred clicks on it but if that doesn't work then perhaps you might want to try the cleaner thing. The only real other option would be to replace the magnets so trying the cleaner might not hurt. I don't think its worth it to replace the magnets. Just be careful becasue some electrical contact cleaners can melt plastic.

@CannonFastReviews
@CannonFastReviews 6 жыл бұрын
Hum not powering on. I would say either there are bad battery connections or bad connections between the power winder if you have one. If that is not the case then perhaps internal damage to wiring or a loose wire. When did the problem start?

Hi Todd, thank you very much for the video. My shutter is working again thanks to your help. I'm still having a problem... My camera has a lost screw; the larger one, that's in the interior where you load the film. The camera looks well sealed without that screw, but it doesn't load the film. I don't know if that's the reason. Any idea? thanks!!
@CannonFastReviews
@CannonFastReviews 10 жыл бұрын
Hum shoot was it working before you disassembled the camera? Try resetting the camera and if you can replace that screw. I don't believe that screw should have anything to do with the film winder. You can VERY CAREFULLY take the bottom plate off and see if any wiring has come un-soldered but be very careful not to tear any ribbon wiring. Sometimes a wire will pull and might be the problem. More then likely the film winder could be dead though and would require a full disassembling.
@amcgula
@amcgula 10 жыл бұрын
Todd Armstrong Firts of all thanks for your help. I'm not really sure if the fim winder was working before I disassembled the camera. It was a gift, and the "non responding shutter" was the only information. The camera is in "like new" condition (any scarth, look unused). The previous owner took the camera to a local service (they said the shutter was broken) and I think they lost the screw and maybe has some relation with this problem. The shutter started working perfectly folowing your exact method very easily, but there's that new problem. Thanks again and I'll take a look at the mechanism.
@CannonFastReviews
@CannonFastReviews 10 жыл бұрын
amcgula Hum man I really wonder what could be up. I think what I would do is take the covers off and see if there are any wires that came unsoldered. Also you can take off the bottom plate and hunt around for stripped or missing gears which would wind things. Might be worth peeking around. Would be super nice to get it working again.

schreyerdavid Hi yes it is repairable but to be honest I don't know if its worth the time and effort. I have done a few including the 1N and 1 but today I wouldn't bother anymore. You would need to find a part or a damaged body with a good part. The entire top cover needs to cover needs to come off as well and lots of soldering to access the part. I suggest just trying the video trick a few times and if that doesn't work then I would hunt down a new body on ebay and sell this one as parts. I have actually won a few EOS 3 bodies recently under $50 and one for $20! It takes a lot of hunting but less time then repairing one. Plus the ebay hunt is fun. Do odd keywords and you never know what you might find.

I tried a few things in this video and it started to come back to life, however, the mirror goes up when I press shutter button and I have to press it again to get it to go back down. Am I doing something wrong with the CF setting? did I not turn it off correctly? It also will not change shutter speed of auto focus. Any thoughts? Thanks

Hum this seems very odd. I thought maybe mirror lock up CF for night photography.. But if you can not change shutter speeds of AF almost sound like a electrical problem. You didn't rip a wire or anything? Hum not really sure...

@CannonFastReviews
@CannonFastReviews 6 жыл бұрын
Hum to me it sounds like a common occurrence of dirty contacts. Make sure the contacts inside the grip are completely clean. Often batteries leak in these things and just block the contacts enough so they don't make proper contact. Make sure the posts inside the grip are clean. This is usually the prob with these grips. Then I would take off the grip and clean all the tiny pin contacts on the grip that mesh with the body and same with the body. I'm currently away but if you still have problems let me know and I will be home soon to look over my camera for more options. But I'm guessing the contacts inside the grip...

Hey, thanks for the video btw. Have you ever run across an eos-3 where everything works minus the all important film advance. It actually appears as if the the motors are not getting juice and also the quick dial on the back cover does not function. I noticed the three contacts on the door, the male nipple thangs, where they make contact on the flat copper contacts, those have little dents, can that be an issue? I'm not sure how the power is supplied to the auto advance reel. PB-E2 yields same results: shutter works, display works, film is acknowledged by camera via small pic, but film doesn't advance and quick dial does not work. Also tried flipping switches on and off for the quick select dial thinking that maybe it was stuck, but nuthin'. Quite desperate. Camera is in beautiful shape otherwise, but obviously, useless. Thanks for reading.
@CannonFastReviews
@CannonFastReviews 8 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you have a electrical communication error. Yes this does happen from time to time. First reset all the settings. Clean all contacts you see. Yes those 3 dents from the back pins are normal. The winder motors rarely go dead and how your camera is reacting tells me there is an electronic error. Possibly from a torn ribbon or a solder fail, or even a chip ruined. You can pull the botton but be careful not to tear ribbons. Possibly you will see a torn ribbon or disconnect. But my guess is it would need a full repair which in my opinion is not worth the cost. Better off buying one on ebay for less money. Return this one or sell it for parts. The motor doesn't run at all?

Hum should more like your have an electrical connection failure either on the lens or body mount. Does it do this with a normal EF Canon lens? Or does it just do it with your Holga lens? Make sure your electrical contacts are clean on both the lens and body. To me it almost sounds like it is the electrical contacts are not working properly.

The guts of the 620 are totally different and doesn't have the same magnets as these. So are you getting a BC error? In the 620 99% of the time its just a dead battery that causes them to stop working. The 620 is a really tough camera. Have you tried a new battery? My guess is a new battery will fix it. Let me know :)

André Castanheira Oh yes sorry I thought you might be using the regular battery in the GR-E1 grip. Different batteries may definitely give different results and I read that some batteries (not sure which ones) will mess with the camera as well as the light meter. I know older camera meters hated certain batteries. Have you tried the 2CR5? Ya definitely that would be great if you could report back your findings!

Hi Todd Armstrong. Thanks for being so attentive. I don´t have an original grip, but I used a 2CR5 in the BP-E1. It didn´t work... I did take the camera apart and knocked the magnet a bit, but still no go above 1/4000th of a second. The shutter works properly and it exposes as expected, but the mirror doesn´t return. It´s only when I press the shutter halfway that the mirror returns. I´m out of ideas, but I´ll keep looking. :)

André Castanheira Oh that sort of sounds like your custom function #12 is set to mirror lock up but it shouldn't only do it at 4000th so I'm not sure. Unless mirror lock up is limited to 4000th but I don't think it does. Check out page 116. www3.canon.de/images/pro/fot/slr/geh/file/eos_3_eng_toc.pdf Beyond this I'm not sure.

I got the bc error when I was trying to shoot in low light in av mode , is it normal??
@CannonFastReviews
@CannonFastReviews 7 жыл бұрын
Hum that doesn't really make sense and it shouldn't happen in low light. I'm not really sure why it would do that. All I can think of is that perhaps the battery is running low and didn't want to take the shot if its a super long exposure because perhaps the camera calculated that it couldn't run the dead battery that long....

Not really getting an error, but my Eos 1's on and off/power lever switch snapped off for no reason. Any way to fix?
@CannonFastReviews
@CannonFastReviews 10 жыл бұрын
Hey yes luckily its a fairly easy fix. Take the 7 screws off the bottom plate and the on off switch is held on with 1 screw. Don't bend the electronic contacts. You can either glue the switch back together if you have the part or buy a damaged body for under $40 on ebay and replace it. I had a aperture lock switch go one and I just glued it and it has been holding for a long time.

Todd Armstrong Ended up purchasing a donor body. Just as you said, 7 screws, off comes the plate, and there she is. Though I had to be careful with the orientation of the disk that the switch actuated on, as well as what looked like a tiny bearing ball that locked the switch onto the on and off modes. All that aside, the lever switch is like new and feels better than it was before.

Woo Hooo!!! Thats what I like to hear!! That is so good! Shoot it lots at first just to make sure they don't stick again. I sometimes had to take a camera apart 3 times before it finally stopped sticking. Most just take the 1 time though but I shoot them lots (app. 200clicks) to make sure they won't stick again.

If it was working when the person sold it to you maybe they were able to get it going long enough just to ship it but in reality it probably didn't work. Can you return it?

Ya sadly I have had a few that couldn't recover as well. Some people have commented that just pulling a magnet over the area works. Maybe just try doing that a few times and if the magnet can suck things free maybe it can recover.
