Being very frugal, I would probably buy some "play-doe" from the dollar store to make a mold then put the piece in the freezer and the play-doe would harden. Wood glue and very fine sawdust makes an excellent filler material. I stretch a penny and make copper wire. Your video was good and it will help many people with their projects.

Nice video Chris, I actually have used bondo for furniture repair since the 70's but never thought of using a mold, we just would fashion the piece using knives, rasps, files and sand paper. You mentioned how quickly the bondo sets up, here's a tip: For a glob of bondo the size you had only use about half as much hardener as you did maybe even less than that, experiment with different amounts but generally the more part "B" (hardener) the faster it sets up. Another thing that affects the set time is the temperature, cooler temps give a little more working time. Not trying to steal your glory as you did a wonderful job on this video just a couple tips you might find helpful.

I think you will have better long term results if you use screws, or dowels, or even drill holes into the wooden part of the repair, for the bondo to cling onto for a better physical bond. In automotive use often you distress the sheet metal with a shrinking hammer that leaves a waffle pattern in the metal to increase the bonding surface area and give the bondo more area to grip.

Beautifully done fix on your piece, great save. I have used wood filler to repair a rather large Nick Nack, porcelain figure, a family favorite that I just couldn't let be thrown to waste. The wood filler worked amazing. And have done many after that piece. I did not have to mould, just form, sand, and paint to match the rest of the piece. I have learned, not all wood fillers are created equal and have been disappointed with some brands, so stick to ones that you know work well. I appreciate the info on your moulding product, great tip, 💕Tfs and Hope you have a wonderful week

I have a repair shop. One tip. In the missing spot, predrill and screw in some screws to act as rebar to hold the filler and lessen the amount you need. Many times I just fill the damage and sand and file as you did and just shape it. I skip the mold process. Esp for feet and areas that aren't centerpieces of the furniture. A slight variation won't ever be noticed. But great job overall !

I doubt you’ll see this comment, but. I have the exact same China hutch desk that you have here. I am going to be stripping and refinishing mine. I have the claw and Bob wood foot like yours in poor shape. I want to know is that is there a colored Bondo that I should be using, since I’m gonna have to be staining it? I think the finial and the broken arch on top is just gorgeous on this thing! And it’s really cool that we have the claw and ball foot instead of having it just be a square block. I just think it’s gorgeous. Thank you for letting me know. Its from the 50s. just a hint sometimes that grill being so fragile does get ruined in spots. So you possibly could’ve sold it. Been making molds for repairs/replacements on furniture for 30+ years. But holy smokes your mold material is expensive. $18 for 10 oz is crazy high. You can make molds much cheaper than that with the materials you have on hand. Also it is much easier to file and carve your repair area if you pull your mold while your bondo is not fully cured. You want to catch it just a minute or two after it kicks, then it will shape easily with file, razor blade and sandpaper.
