I managed to create exactly such a broken trace on an A500 board when prying out a DIP chip carelessly with a screwdriver. It took me hours to find the cause with the chip on top of it. I've learned my lesson. And you are so right with your advice! Countless times it took me just a night of sleep over a very frustrating problem and the next morning I magically found the right track and fixed it in no time. I think the wisdom to sometimes call it a day comes with age ;-)

I'd bet what you're describing where a solution "comes to you" after setting something aside is essentially a kind of subconscious awareness. You almost certainly saw that jumper previously but didn't consciously acknowledge it. Later, your brain finally caught up and, voila, you have your answer in your conscious mind. BTW, I quite enjoy your videos. They're informative without being overly wordy.

Thanks for following up on this cache problem. I have the same motherboard and it has a cache problem too. It does not see any cache. I suspected a bad connector. I will have to revisit it with a multimeter and check for dead pin connection.

Hi Necroware, „Repair Marathon” is grate series! It’s been a pleasure to watch, how you bring back those old mobos form almost certain dead. Please don’t stop and keep them coming! Also great work and logical problem solving approach with step by step testing components technic! I have one favor to ask, that is could you point me on that pulse probe that you using, I thinking on getting one (UE located store will be perfect). Also maybe you will consider an episode on hardware/ equipment and components (flux, wires etc.) that you use in your workshop? I believe that could be very interesting. Thanks in advance and regards from Poland!

Hi Tomasz! Thank you very much. I don't remember where I got my logic probe, I guess from China. You can find it on Ebay or other stores under the name LOGIC PROBE LP-1. It costs just around 5-8€, depending on where you buy it. And in regards of hardware/equipment video, I thought about it already, but I'm actually not using a lot of special things. Everything is cheapo no name stuff. I actually don't care about materials I'm using too much. I heard and read endless discussions about solder, flux and other stuff from people, but I don't participate in such discussions. I just use whatever I have at hand and it works as you see in many of my videos. Even for dense SMD soldering, like Voodoo I just used cheapest no name materials from China.... Best Reagards!

Your approach is very similar to mine when encountering a situation where you have a motherboard with optional configuration pins. I always want to have all of the optional pins installed for jumpers and I want as many chip solder points to be equipped with sockets where possible to make future adjustments easier.

that's some crazy bad luck to have damage through the socket frame! but very good investigation and repair. i have a bigger issue with a mainboard that has the all-plastic SIMM socket and they are in such fragile shape that i will need to source 4 of them for my repair. even after replacing just one socket, i still do not pass memory check, so i will examine the traces more closely for physical damage - i might be "lucky" that the fix is something simple like that.

I haz a same or similar board! and I removed the keyboard controller ... ungracefully to replace with a full size one that I can hack in a PS2 mouse port. I stopped at the ruined removal and put it away, a few years ago. NOW! ah knows it'sa gonna WORK with that jumper change! and also now, my skills and tools have vastly improved! heh, no more ruining vintage IC's that ruin themselves for me!

3:13 why not just solder a jumper headers if you already had it de-soldered? :) ps. nice video as always
@necro_ware3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I thought about to use a jumper, but decided to go without, since jumpers at 14MHz are may be not the best idea. Probably it would still work, but since I hopefully will never touch it again, I guess, it's ok just to solder it.

@necroware - I have a similar issue on boot. It hangs before it can boot from floppy. Sometimes it tries to boot from the floppy but it says boot failure - I know the boot disk is good. Tried different floppy drives and cables. Does disabling L2 cache in the BIOS bypass any bad cache chips? I plan to remove them all soon and check traces

after overlooking 4 different defects on some IBM AT board I bought, I made it a habit to examine every incoming mainboard or card for at least 10 minutes with a magnifying glass to spot dodgy things. It is somewhat effective, I am still missing things though.
