I run a family auction service that my dad started in 52. I do estate house clean-outs and find many old radios, tubes and equipment in the old basement & garage shops. A lot of times it has not been touched in decades. I make sure every bit is put back in to circulation. A lot of times the family will try to trow it out. They think it is old junk & that they are helping me by making room, They do not know it still has value to the Radio collectors. I tell everyone do not throw anything out until we leave and are finished with the picking. Then you know whats left is junk. We have saved a lot great stuff for the repair guys.

We have a local auction here I've picked up many sets from them guys. Some that were nice and some that were parts. All of them either got repaired or the parts went to good use. Thanks for being there and saving this stuff that isn't made anymore for us that enjoy them.

as a kid in the 1960s and 70s I used to see a lot of these radios for sale at the local thrift store. The going price as is was five dollars. lol but back in the 60s and 70s five dollars was a lot of money for a kid. a weeks allowance.

Illinois capacitor has been in business for nearly 90 years it was acquired in 2015 by Cornell Dubilier but still exists as a brand. Its current products are available through Mouser as well as others.
@45AMT2 жыл бұрын
That wasn't the brand in the set.

@@45AMT "Illini Hycap" at 7:35 in. Made by the Illinois Condenser Company - predecessor to Illinois Capacitor, now a part of CDE. It's pronounce "ill eye nigh" just like the fighting Illini from University of Illinois.

Regarding value matching: For resistors it probably is OK, depending on the tolerance band (silver = 10%, missing = 20%) You probably don't find 5% (gold band) in the old items before WW2. Capacitor tolerances, especially aluminum electrolytic ones is a different story. The old tolerances used to be all over the map, such as +/- 30% at best, or even -50% / + 100%. Useless to try to match something labeled 25 uF with 15 + 10, for example. 33 uF will do just as well or even better.

Older stuff like this resistors only have 3 bands No tolerance bands.

Looks like a “high hours” radio. But it’s still restorable..

Radio Rescue can you still buy paper capacitors new if so you know a place? Someday I want fix old tube radio but want use wax paper capacitors like how looks.
@hestheMaster2 жыл бұрын
If you want to keep it looking original you can restuff an old wax paper capacitor with a modern yellow one. They have the same or better electrical ratings are are much safer to use. They don't make wax paper caps anymore. There are videos on YT that specifically address how and why. Once you get the hang of restuffing capacitors it does get easier. Good luck on your future repair endeavors.

Enjoyed the video of this PHILCO. Just wondering, do you ever offer sets for sale? I would like to get one like this one you just worked on. Thanks!

Nice complete repair less grill cloth. Needed a good check out since it has age on it and even the "new "stuff was bad. Glass tubes only in Philco's . Ebay seller " transistor 17046 "has several sizes of rubber grommets sold in sets of 4. Have a merry and safe Christmas! Steve

Another job well done. Philco never used metal tubes, wood knobs, or eye tubes. Majority of their dials were small. They're excellent performers.

Couldn’t you use a personalized radio transmitter to play KZbin approved music while working on these radios? Sure enjoy your videos.

I have a transmitter. I'll have to figure that out.
