How do you line up the cutting tool with the threads to clean them up?

I think you have to serve the lathe to cut the existing thread that you have. Stat the lathe as if you are cutting the thread, then stop the lathe with everything still engaged, then use your compound and cross slides to align the cutting into the existing threads. Then you can run over the existing thread,cleaning it up, or cutting it deeper. Like I say,I think that is the process. I would like to be corrected if I am wrong.
