Repair Series #13 - Broken violin - GiveAway: Fiddlerman Strings - ASMR

This 4/4 violin inspired on the Maggini model with double purfling and bird-eye maple back has a big crack on the top and a problem with the edge. Great video. A little trick from a fellow luthier. If you take a wooden No.2 pencil you can split it right down the center. You can then use this to mark on the bridge to see where your projection height is by running the split pencil over the fingerboard surface.

Thank you for the tip. I have used this methode but after a wile the pencil bent (maybe form humidity? who knows) and all my bridges where to high!! Now I use a ruller to make two smal marks.

I have watched some of your violin repair videos. I have a very old violin I used when I was young. It;s a very good violin with a dragon head scroll. The handle and the part that holds the strings are disconnected. Are you interested in seeing it to see if it is repairable? I can take a picture of it.

Kimon. That was a pleasure to watch. Can you tell me what glue you were using for that repair. PS Would a sound post crack like that have been better to take the top off and put cleats on the inside to repair the crack ?

Hello Ricky. Thank you for your kind feedback. I mostly use hide glue for the repairs. This was not a soundpost crack but a "normal" one. An soundpost crack is a crack the pases over the soundpost and under the right foot of the bridge. In that case (also depending on the value of the instrument) I would do a soundpost puch. I'm working now on a cello that will need a repair like this so you will be able to see it in some time.

In all the string instrument videos I've see, I've never seen a luthier repair a major crack without taking the top off and bracing the crack from the back with little pieces of wood. What was your reason for not doing that with this violin. Thank you.

I often repair cracks without removing the top, especially on budget instruments. It is faster and cheaper. I glue the reinforcements through the ef-hole.

Removing the top is pretty intensief for an instrument, I try to avoid if possible.

It is indeed a copy of the Maggini model but this instrument is much newer and not made in Italy!

It's hard to say how many hours as I worked on it for a week but also filmed and had to way for the glue to dry. Maybe 8 to 12 hours. The strings are good and I would recommend them.

Hi- I have no idea if you take requests, but my girlfriend just broke her violin she's had for 6 years. She's told me how much she hated most violins because of how cold and metallic they sound and when she returned to hers it would always sound warm and remind her of home. The damage might be irreparable but if I were to pick someone to fix it you would be one of them. It's a snap at the base of the neck- do you think you or anyone could have a chance at repairing it??

Is it always better to change the old hardwood fingerboard to new ebony? Does it affect the sound character?

I change them because of a couple of reasons: they don't look good and they are too soft and get worn out too soon. It affects the sound as ebony I heavier tha the wood that was used on this violin but I couldn't compare them.

What kind of glue did you use to repair top? I thought the top had to be taken off and gluing had to be done from bottom surface..

Removing the top is expensive and time consuming and not always necessary. There is no problem gluing from the outside.
