Kirk. Only you can keep me Watching a video about an issue I don’t even have for 25 minutes, and still consider it time well spent. On holiday no less ❤ Also. Funny how the ..what did you call it? Finishing touches? Are the hardest to achieve by a non pro. Alsoooo not only did I watch that aforementioned video, but also (after bombarding you with ratio questions), piggy backed on it, to fix concrete stairs, and a much more wedged parking entrance surfacing layer. Still holds after few years gone by,. I’m not expecting 20. But I think anything above 4 ,to 5 years is a win. Anyways. Always love to watch a master at work. Would love to see how that fix held over the winter.

One of the best instructional you have ever produced guys. I think I know why the water part is such a recurring issue. Most of us do it yourself guys, never used a power washer, not to mention a gas powered one. So ..for me at least, it want obvious just how much important it is to make sure the old concrete is not just damp.. but wet inside as well, for a good mechanical bond. But I do have a tip for those without a notion as to how to damp the old surface. Get an old bedsheet even. Cover the surface with it and drench it with water. And let it hang there for an hour, while making sure it’s always drenched with water. That should do it. Also..another tip for good bonding is first brush the surface with a water thinned cement ..simple one. Like a. Painting texture. As cement is basically a sort of adhesive ..combining it with water like that will connect the two layers.. old and new ..better. Just make sure that the brushed cement is still at least damp when you apply the top layer of concrete. If it’s dry then you need to wet it again
@StuccoPlastering4 жыл бұрын
Good morning Gefilta, Good advice my friend. I would add if a homeowner does not have pressure washer available that is strong enough to etch the concrete. Then to improvise and etch the concrete well with a "wire-brush" and some old fashioned elbow grease, then rinse off excess loose cement dust. Some readers might think, where do I find elbow grease? 😎I'm referring to physical strength or muscle with the effort to scrub the dust off. Folks are now ready, to begin with, whatever first prep steps they are partial too. @StuccoPlastering4 жыл бұрын
Good evening Gefilta, yes, the acid will etch the concrete. Then go into the street and makes its way into our water supply. I don't like to use toxic stuff if I don't have to. Plus, with using acid you'd need a respirator. The only toxins I'll allow are whats in my beers. 🍺 Bringing peace, love, and brotherhood back to the world of “Plastering.” 😏 With over 800 educational and free KZbin videos, by your favorite plaster geek, “me,” and my son, “Jason,” the bearded plasterer.😉

Great job and video. Priceless knowledge for DIYers. Like the man said Polybond is a professional grade product and big box stores have re-surfacing products that are decent. Pressure wash, clean and etch like he said. Preparation is key and thin multiple coats. Also your driveway still looks great! Good afternoon Charlie green, Polybond will work for crack repairs but has lite grainy sand to it. If the crack is huge, you may want to hit it again when the poly bond is dry as it won't go more than a quarter of an inch without shrinking. FYI, Poly-bond by La Habra is specifically engineered to adhere styrofoam to base coats of stucco. Thus, it's an adhesive cementitious cement. OK, went to both Lowes and Home Depot and could not find this Poly Bond. A dude on the street said he could "get stuff" he looked really shady but for $100 he hooked me up with a pack (it looked like he took a bit for himself). I have no experience with Poly Bond or concrete for that matter, but I used hot glue once so I figured how hard could it be? Well, it was a disaster. I managed to burn down my house! I have an over 50 year old concrete patio behind my house in NY and due to the freeze/thaw cycling we get massive sprawling if you don’t seal concrete and/or use salt in the winter; we’ve been resurfacing concrete for decades with simply a pressure washing, 2-3 coats of diluted bonding agent sprayed over, and a Portland slurry with a fortified then simply Portland and sand, plus just a little lime and it lasts for years and is quite cheap. For some better protection we’ll use RapidSet CementAll and their flow aid as it cures out to 9,000 PSI and is very resistant to water and salt. Top and Bond is a lot of people’s go-to but is just too expensive for any kind of real area; we’ve done this over driveways and in garages and have never had issues with some top coats going beyond 20 years, though some can pop/sprawl especially if highly salted and if we get days cycling between warm and freezing. Ultimately do what you’re comfortable with but I’m always looking to save $ and topping concrete is a big money saver.
@StuccoPlastering2 жыл бұрын
Howdy Libertarian, many ways to skin a cat, those methods do indeed work. That cement all is kind of fun to work with, huh, sets in like 5 minutes, but the strength is indeed unreal. cheers, my friend.🍾
@libertarian16372 жыл бұрын
@@StuccoPlastering: Depends a lot on weather as it sets a lot quicker on hot days but 10-15 minutes can be expected, once mixing starts; you can extend times by keeping the bags cold or using ice water and speed things up by using hot water. They also conveniently have packages of flow aid, which works like a super plasticizer to increase flow without increasing water and decreasing strength, and a set retarder which buys about 10-25 more minutes per packet up to 4/55 lb. bag. I like the RapidSet line as it is hard as a rock in an hour, without set retarder, and was a big go-to in the Military when time counts. Grew up in a family of tradesmen including a mason or two and while I didn’t go into masonry I do it from time to time; I’m always amazed at the longevity and look of a days work, you just don’t get that from all the trades. Like the videos, just thinking of stucco as I’ve been redoing the 50-140 year old coat on the foundation and just unifying all the additions; while it looks nice it reminds me I’m no spring chicken and I’m glad I choose a trade that was less manually hard.

@@StuccoPlastering Rapid Set is its own type of cement, it is non shrink, and can even be used for doweling anchors. It can be feathered, They have patch, mortar, stucco, concrete, water stop. They actually started selling it at Home Depot, used to be only in concrete supply houses. They have 10 pound boxes and 50 pound bags. Grab a blue box and try it out, great for repairs, will hit 12,000 PSI in a month. I use it to repair stucco around garage openings that were vehicle damaged. Its definitely an adhesive.

@StuccoPlastering4 жыл бұрын
Good afternoon Cristine and Andrea, LOL, we all know what Poly-bond is specifically engineered for attaching styrofoam to base coats of stucco. What I do is add about half the sand per mix. Thus if I add a half bucket of poly-bond, I add the rest with sand, then mix. Then let it slack for about 20 minutes. After the 20-minutes break, the slake by re-mixing, then fill the holes. As I did in this video, I sometimes skim the whole thing once more with the straight poly bond when this coat drys. Remember, this shit is important. Nothing adheres to a dusty, dirty, oily surface, 'Nothing,' not Poly-bond or the best adhesive caulking Sikaflex. So if it comes off or cracks, you did it wrong. I believe I'm talking to two plasterers who already know this kind of stuff?😉 With my false teeth, I use full strength poly bond hold them in place plus taste yummy.🤔That's a joke, folks, so don't go saying I tried the stuff for my teeth and got sick.😏 Kirk and Jason Giordano, together we have provided to all folks throughout the world the most complete plastering encyclopedia ever created online. Good morning Cristine, dude. Concrete is portland cement and rocks. Stucco is portland cement and sand.
