This was a joy to watch. My late father was born in 1919 and had a very large collection of old tools, which he treasured; some were from his father, grandfather, and uncles. Sadly just about everything was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. I managed to salvage a few things, including the brass medallion from one of his handsaws, just like the one in your video.

Thank you for sharing. Katrina was devastating on so many levels. Hard to believe it was 19 years ago this week!

You can’t beat that old steel. Modern blades usually can’t be corrected like this one. I like that it’s not over restored.
@Restorology2 жыл бұрын
I am lucky that this was not in very bad condition but you are totally correct about how old steel and newer steel behaves differently. I just repaired another one of these that was in much worse condition. It was sitting outside for years and it took a lot of work to bring it back but once the crud was removed and the blade was given a little TLC, it performs beautifully now. Thanks for the comment!

Excellent job, I think you need to re set the teeth this will clear the path of the saw cut, the handle grip I'd drill and add a brass rod for additional strength even though glue is strong but the force of use could break it in a hidden place within the handle,the section that as had the screw bolts will have the support of them so no need for additional support there. Hope this helps.
@Restorology2 жыл бұрын
I think you are absolutely correct about setting the teeth. I didn't have a tool to do it but since have learned to do it with a punch and hammer. Crude but it worked. I restored another saw on the channel a few months ago and did this. It worked well. I didn't think about hidden cracks within the handle...something to consider if it feels like it is about to give again. Thanks for the advice! 🍻

Great find and clean up. Would a slight set to the teeth help it cut?
@Restorology3 жыл бұрын
That's definitely something to check. There is a slight set already but I didn't think about checking the angle. It didn't feel like it was biting into the wood enough though so you may be correct. It cut okay but it took a lot of work to get through that log. Thanks for the idea! Cheers!

@@Restorology thank you for the reply. The product you put the saw blade in and what kink of glue did you use on the handle when you were filling the cracks. Thanks again Jess
@Restorology3 жыл бұрын
Okay got it. For removing the rust I let it sit overnight in a cleaning vinegar that has a higher concentration of acetic acid and then ran it through my parts cleaner that has just a regular water-based degreasing solution in it but it would be fine scrubbing it with anything, the vinegar really loosened up most of the surface rust. I had to remove the remaining rust and oxidation with 220 and 500 grit sandpaper and oil but scrubbed lightly so I wouldn't damage the etching or scratch the surface. When gluing the handle, I used Gorilla brand wood glue that is rated as type 1 water-proof. I think it is a PVA glue. Seems to be working well so far. To seal the remaining cracks, I filled them with sawdust from the handle and sealed it with an ordinary super glue, but one that is viscous enough to filter through the crack and into the wood. It provided a hard fill but a little off color as you can see in the video. If you use a darker stain, it will blend in. Good luck and thanks again for the feedback. I'll make a point to show more of the materials I use. Cheers!
