Been on KZbin since late 2015 you are the first that I know of besides me that uses lithium grease on the plastic gears. I've only been using it for more than a decade plus years. Everything else I use label products. In my 61 to years being a model railroader.😅 All mine keep running. Many are over 30 to as much as 55 years old if not 100 year's on. Doing preventative maintenance is the key to keeping them running.

@@christophermondone6864 It was Bachmann from maybe the late 80’s through 90’s where I found lithium grease being used, and I noticed it stayed slick no matter how old it was. The tube of it I’m using now was cheap and has been working great!

@@DarthSantaFe it's always worked best for me, especially for plastic years in the engines, lasted longer no damage to them helps keeping them from cracking or chipping the best that I can tell, from my experience using it my late uncle turned me onto using it.

Those Atlas locos are almost top of the range & are supposed to run smoothly & quietly. There has to be something wrong with it to make that noise. Sometimes, the drive shafts are a fraction too long, can make that noise as it appears the trucks run smooth & quiet before they were put on the chassis. They are nice locos.

The only thing I'd recommend when gauging any wheelset is to check the gauge at multiple points around the axle to make sure that wheels are square. Other than that, excellent as always Darth!

Thanks! I did notice that a little along the way and made sure things were corrected, but most of them were perfectly straight.

Amazing tutorials - thanks. Only thing I would differ over is, you put all that work into making the SW1500 run well, put a Kadee Whisker or equivalent metal coupler in there. The plastic couplers just don't hold up even to moderate use or wear. Usually the knuckle face breaks or the spring loses tension. Not worth constantly reinstalling them in my opinion. Otherwise great video - these Athearn RTR and Atlas are great runners and if properly maintained are nearly bullet-proof providing years of excellent service. (And usually at a good price!)
@DarthSantaFe Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I put the McHenry couplers in as a freebie, but I did use the ones with metal springs since the plastic springs are about useless. Normally I stick with Kadee metal and plastic couplers, but these will at least let it pull something for now.

Excellent tutorial. If I had even the most miniscule mechanical ability and diagnostic intuition, I would likely, with your videographic help, be able to do at least some basic maintenance and repair. .Unfortunately, I don't, so, I'll be in touch.

Very nice episode. Would you consider demonstrating how to change a new motor for an old one in an old diesel such as in AHM?
@DarthSantaFe Жыл бұрын
Maybe eventually! That’ll depend on what comes through, but I did briefly show a new motor installation for a C-LINER in the mass repair video a few months back.

A very informative video. Many Thanks! BTW, I use the pointy end of a shish kabob stick to clean the inside of the brass bearings. Is there a danger of making the hole in the bearing too wide to transfer electricity to the axle, in some way? Thank you for your answer.
@DarthSantaFe Жыл бұрын
Using a wood stick is perfectly fine! The metal bearings won’t be damaged by that.

I'm new to your channel and really enjoyed this video. I tend to buy a lot of older locomotives that usually require cleaning away old grease. What has me puzzled is why would someone want to change a powered loco to a dummy? What's the benefit. Thanks, Mark

Yeah, even when I was a kid playing with the scale trains on the floor, I was always taught to handle things carefully so they didn’t break. I still caused some damage here and there of course, but not to this level.
