A car demolished part of a front boundary wall. I rebuild it and give tips from the trade on mixing mortar along with general building tips. I used my iphone 3GS to record the shoot.

Thanks Chris. Excellent tutorial for the beginner, like myself, in small brick repair. The cement/water ratio and mix rationale were very informative and appreciated.

Thanks Chris. Certain party who shall remain nameless (me) did something similar to the front wall. Luckily for me the bricks are regular (and largely undamaged) but this straightforward tutorial simplified the process (I had stacked brick before as a helper but never done the bricklaying myself, even though it's a small job). Great tutorial! So nice to get someone with real experience and common sense doing these, DIY vids can often be little more than advertorial for Halford's or whoever, so it's nice to know you're in safe hands. BBQ looks amazing. Please do more tutorials if you get the chance.

Those bricks are attractive, but a bit of a nuisance to build with. Great video. Thanks for your efforts.

Going to try and fix a step with bricks. I guess the most important thing to do is clean the bricks and old mortar so the new mortar will set up right. Thanks so much for posting this. Your wall and path and barbeque look great.

Hey up Emeraldthrone, thanks for watching my video and commenting on it. We do have special cements used mainly on large building projects. On theses large projects the mortar is either brought onto sight ready mixed in tubs or they have huge hoppers with it all pre mixed, they just add water and its ready to go. What I was doing is a small DIY job and will help the novice's and home DIYers. And yes I am a Born Again Christian..for 31 years and have recently planted a church. It's grown

Better to use plasticiser in the mortar, or even better a cement:lime mix (especially if the wall is built of natural stone). Washing up liquid is known to reduce the long term strength and durability of mortar (although for a non-loadbearing low garden wall, that's probably not going to be a major issue).

I had a similar thing happen. I have a decorative brick wall that frames the ditch which runs under my drive. It fell off in 2 large pieces about 3 foot by 2 foot. My bricks are very old and match the brick that previous owner of my home put down to line the edge of the driveway. I have never done this before but what I have to do is so small, hiring someone seems wasteful. I have about 20 bricks to replace. But they are all stuck together and I can't seem to separate them for repair.

The strenght and testamony to the buildings in NYC are the proof as to there reliability, our cements allow for Excellent workability with NO-plasticizer either artificial or store bought, here goes,... I hope I don't Catch flak for this, 1-75 lb bag of good masonry cement, ( Lehigh, Lafarge, Saylors, ) 16 good pointed shovels of clean mason's washed sand, approx 10 1/2- 11 lbs per shovel full, and one good shovel of Portland cement for Med-High strenght jobs. same formula without portland for,

Really Enjoying Watching Your Series Of Videos Chris, Watching This Video Answered The Question I Was Going To Ask, That Being The Use Of Washing Up Liquid I Noticed You Only Used About A Thimble Full, Is There A Case Of Using To Much And What Would That Do To The Mix, I Use Wickes Ready Mixed Motor Bags As I Find Them More Manageable As I've Not Quite Got To The Stage Of Being Able To Quantify The Amount And As I Only Do Small Garden Projects Around Our Garden It Suits My Needs, Once Again Buddy Thanks For Taking The Time To Produce A Cracking Set Of Vids

Just A Quick Footnote Chris You Have Answered My Question On "What Would Happen If You Used To Much Washing Up Liquid"
@foundationgood1238 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching the vids-:) Regarding the detergent, I only put a very small drop, this is sufficient to make the mortar workable! It doesn't need much its the same for the add mixer plasterzizers which are detergent based too!- To much of either makes the mortar very aerated and runny if mixed for longer period than normal...thus adding to much air into the mix which weekend the mix!

Nomal jobs NO-Portland, we also use other mixes that translate into 3-sand 1-cement, Portland/Slacked Lime/ sand mixes,... lime/ smaller qualtity portland sand mixes, straight lime/sand mixes, we have about 6-7 different types of mixes for preservation work, to historical work , to new construction,... what you would be beside your self with is,... the absolute workability of our products, finished mortar on the trowel is an absolute dream to work with and provides superior results,...

From what I have seen from you and others so far, it sems that the masonry cement in the UK and other places is inferior ? based on testamonies and explainations as to the workability of the cement products I was wondering how this came about ? here is the formula for NYC mixes, this is kind of a kept secret for the past 60-70 years, but I thought you and others might like this information after all unless we share valuable info how else can we expect the next generation to be good mason's >CONT

I would have thought with the hundreds of years of remaining stone and brick work in Europe and the UK they would have superior products to ours, ? Why does it seem that the states have always been the inovators in technologies,... I just find it interesting is all ? does the UK have strict uniform codes as to building and product practices ? or is it, more like this is what we offer,.. take it of leave it ,..? The beauty of the internet is that we can exchange info to help the next generation >

So if "washing up liquid" are the same thing, what do "Brits" call the the soap for washing your clothing 🤔 And I'm not trying to wind you up. I actually want to know. I could look it up on fucking Google, but I don't really like to learn without some type of interaction.
