A friend's mother brought a Black Forest cuckoo clock from Germany, a rather intricate clock with birds instead of the two squirrels. My friend's trained bird hunting dog bounded into the house while the clock chimed the hour, ripping the clock from the wall and attacking the bird. Proudly retrieving the clock, he proudly dropped the crumpled mess at the feet of his master. It's all pretty funny, but a very nice clock was wrecked and his mother was in shock. Your video helped me to rebuild damaged cuckoo clock. It took several days and three reassembles before I got it right, but I must report that in spite of a few obvious scratches, the clock is now working just fine. Thank you again for taking the effort as it is your excellent camera work that showed how to straighten out the mechanical mess.

Thank you for relating this incident and your success in repairing the disaster. I make the videos primarily for the owner of the clock to see the kind and extent of work done on the clock. I'm gratified that others find the videos helpful in fixing their own clocks. It helps to keep many clocks from simply being relegated to a land fill, since having a clock repaired professionally is, for many, beyond their budget means. Thank you for the comment. It makes producing the video worthwhile.

I'm at wits end.... I have an older Regula 25 Cuckoo clock just like this one minus the animated squirrels. I bought a new movement for it, installed it and now it only runs without a pendulum. Tried watching your videos hoping to learn how to fix it, but I just don't have the tools nor the know-how. I compare it to brain surgery, either you know what you're doing or you don't. It is a beautiful little clock, and I don't want to kill it.
@dperry428
@dperry428 5 жыл бұрын
I can't diagnose something without seeing it, but I can suggest a couple things. Look underneath the clock at the slot through which the pendulum leader exits the bottom of the clock. Is the wire hanging in the middle of the slot? Does the position of the wire in the slot change when you add the pendulum? The pendulum's weight may pull the wire to the front or back enough to cause the wire to rub on the slot edge. Also, where the wire goes through the loop in the crutch, which is inside the case, the leader should also go through that loop in its center. The pendulum may pull the leader back or forward enough to cause it to jam against the back or front of the loop. That will be difficult to determine unless you can set the clock up plumb and level on some sort of test stand. Also, inside the case, the pendulum leader may not be hanging freely from the top at it attachment on the post that extends from the back of the movement. Hope that helps.
@dperry428
@dperry428 5 жыл бұрын
Also, are you sure you bought the right movement? The Regula 25 comes with different pendulum lengths with different numbers of teeth on the escape wheel to fit different sized cases and configurations of case. If you bought the wrong one for your clock, the post from which the pendulum leader hangs may be the wrong length and cause rubbing against the exit slot on the bottom of the case.
@LUVZEP77
@LUVZEP77 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for responding. That's exactly what happened. I didn't know the Regula 25 came in different sizes and the movement I bought was too big for the small case I had. I managed to get it working, but that's all it does now. Keeps time, but no cuckoo since the bellows don't fit in the case with the new movement. Lesson learned, I will probably get it professionally fixed one of these days.

I recently inherited one of these with the music box. I have taken it apart and the music mechanism has a gear that has some broken tines. Is there a place online to buy gears for these types of music boxes. also, a couple of forks seem to be missing on the little metal musical fork "keyboard" that makes the melody. So I would like to replace that as well.
@dperry428
@dperry428 4 жыл бұрын
The "keyboard" is called a comb and there are no replacements as each comb is made to go with the roller for the tunes that it plays. There are several gears that are on the music box the most susceptible to damage is the little gear that runs the governor fan. The entire governor is available at a cost of between $25 and $30. You can also replace the entire music box, but they are quite expensive. To buy just the governor, you need to count the tines on the comb and the number of leaves on the pinion gear that connects the roller to the governor. Here are some links: timesavers.com/search.html?q=governor&go=Search www.merritts.com/merritts/public/product.aspx?ProductID=82063 and, for those who don't mind spending twice as much for a part blackforestimports.com/category/Parts-Accessories/Cuckoo-Parts-Accessories/Music-Boxes-Related-Parts-Cuckoo/

I am getting started in repairing cuckoos. Most guys that work on clocks just replace everything now which is not a clockmaker. How long does a rebushed movement last vs a new movement? Can you give me a list of tools I should buy to get started?
@dperry428
@dperry428 4 жыл бұрын
If properly cleaned, pivots polished, rebushed and oiled, a rebuilt movement will last as long or longer than a new one. The tools required is directly related to the extent of repair desired. For normal cleaning and oiling, ordinary household tools are sufficient. As your skills expand, tools are added as needed. For example, when you get to the point of wanting to do bushing work, you'll need the appropriate drills, files, reamers and broaches to do the work properly. Check a appropriate clock supply house for those specialty tools. Timesavers, Ronell Clocks, Merritt's Antiques, Black Forest Imports, Mile-Hi Clocks, Frankenmuth Clocks.

Hey there.i have a question for you if you would have the time to answer please.on a cuckoo clock such as this or similar size.what size cutting broatch would you recommend for rebushing.?hope that didn't sound like a silly question
@dperry428
@dperry428 5 жыл бұрын
This may sound facetious, but the answer is -- whichever one fits. Keep in mind that broaches are not straight-sided;; they are tapered and vary in diameter from the tip to the base. For example, let's say I put in a bushing that has a bore of 1.5 mm and the size of the pivot that needs to go in that bushing is 1.6 mm. I need to make the hole bigger by a tiny bit more than a tenth of a millimeter. I choose a cutting broach that, firstly, will go into the hole in the bushing, but not all the way through to the base of the broach. You want a broach that will go in a fourth to a third of the length of the broach. Then, I broach the hole, checking the hole by trying to put the pivot into it and continuing to broach until the pivot fits. Since the broach is tapered, that's why it's necessary to broach from both sides of the plate. So, you need a set of broaches that will fit the sizes of the pivots that you will be fitting. The sizes of pivots vary from brand to brand of clock and from gear to gear within a given clock. That pivot sizes generally get smaller as you go from the beginning of the gear train to the end. In this particular clock, the pivots, other than the chain wheel, which is about 5 mm, were from 1.00 mm to about 1.75 mm. A clock I just finished had pivots around 0.8 mm. I have a number of cutting broaches that fit 0.25 mm up to about 6 mm. Use the one that fits.

dperry428 thankyou very much for the info.im looking at a set 0.6mm up to 2mm.i was also looking at a set of hole reamers do I need reamers if cutting broaches would do the job.
@dperry428
@dperry428 5 жыл бұрын
The broaches are for enlarging the hole in the installed bushing to make it exactly fit the arbor pivot for a specific gear. The reamers are for cutting the hole in the clock plate into which the bushing is fitted. One could use a drill for making the hole for the bushing, but you'd either have to have exactly sized drills that were just very slightly smaller than each bushing outside diameter or smaller diameter drill to make a hole that could then be finished with a broach to make the hole suitable for placing the bushing. That technique I've used when making bushings on the lathe that are of a size for which I don't have a reamer. It's not an easy way to place bushings because it's very easy to slip up and make the hole in the plate too large and you end up with a loose bushing that could fall out. The reamers I use are sized exactly 3/100ths of a millimeter smaller than the outside diameter of the bushing so that when the smaller bushing is driven into the plate hole, it fits very tightly and won't fall out. Literally, you are forcing a larger diameter bushing into a smaller diameter hole. For example, I have bushings that are 2 mm, 2.5, 3 mm, 3.5 mm 4 mm, 4.5 mm and 5 mm outside diameter. The reamers I have for them are 1.97 mm, 2.47 mm, 2.97 mm, 3.47 mm, 3.97 mm, 4.47 mm and 4.97 mm, respectively. They make putting the holes in the plate for the bushings nearly foolproof over using drills, but, literally, at a cost. Each of the reamers cost $16 to $25, depending on whether American-made or Swiss-made reamers are purchased. As you can see, that can amount to $100 or more just for the reamers. Needless to say, during leaner years, when I was teaching and raising my children, I couldn't afford to buy them, so I used drills ground for drilling brass and then broaching carefully to get the right sized hole, which can be very easy to either undersize or oversize.
@tylervee1891
@tylervee1891 5 жыл бұрын
@@dperry428 thankyou!I appreciate that very much.so is the general rule of thumb make the drill hole 03mm smaller then the outside diameter is the bushing?I'm sorry I don't wanna sound like an idiot.im just keen to get the right equipment. I'm still struggling to get into the hobby,I got a new family of my own and I'm finding affordable tools really hard to come by in New Zealand. Everything is USA or swiss made So expensive 😭
@dperry428
@dperry428 5 жыл бұрын
You're certainly no idiot. Idiots are those who don't ask questions out of fear of appearing to be an idiot. I don't know that there is a general rule as to how much smaller the hole in the plate must be under the OD of the bushing; that happens to be what the difference is between the reamers and bushings that I use. The difference need be great enough that the bushing is a very firm friction fit so that it does not fall out. Were a bushing to fall out in a wound movement, the gear would come unmeshed with its neighbor and all hell would break loose in the gear train as the power source (spring or weight) released catastrophically. Before I was able to afford many of the tools I now have, I had to pass on more complicated repairs for which I was ill-equipped. I have been doing this as a hobby for more than 50 years now, so it has taken a long time to acquire the tools I now have.. Be patient. One thing to keep in mind with bushing clocks is that in the majority of cases where a clock needs a new bushing, it is the second wheel (the one after the spring or chain) that is involved. So, start out with a couple tools to repair the most likely wear and add tools through time as the need arises. Nothing wrong with not having tools to do all possible repairs. I didn't have an ultrasonic cleaner until I received one as a gift just last year. I got a real spring winder just three years ago. I've never owned, nor do I now, a bushing machine. One more thought on bushing. If you have doubt about the tightness of fit of a bushing, just use a thread-locking compound as insurance. In the USA, that would be a brand like red LOCTITE.

Great video, sir! If you could give me a hint, would be much appreciated. The cuckoo in my Regula 25 sometimes gets stuck, its door opens halfway, the cuckoo starts moving and stops. Nothing appears to be stopping it. With a slight push to the door everything starts working and goes through the whole cycle. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The clock is about 5 years old. What are your thoughts what might be happening? Thank you very much in advance.
@dperry428
@dperry428 5 жыл бұрын
While it may APPEAR that nothing is stopping it, something IS, in fact, stopping it. I'd look for a wire, such as those that lift the bellows or the wire from the bird to the door to be binding or rubbing. Look particularly at the wire on the left bellows that lifts the bird's tail. Is that wire UNDER the tail when things bind? That wire may be close to moving above the tail and does, from time to time, causing a bind until you pull the bird forward and the wire can than fall back under the tail. That would be my FIRST guess. Check to see it is clearly under the tail and does not have opportunity to slip and go above the tail. Also, at 5 years old, the clock may been cleaning or, at least, oiling.
@DancesWithCameras
@DancesWithCameras 5 жыл бұрын
@@dperry428Thanks for your prompt response! I reexamined how the cuckoo moves and noticed that there's a possibility for the bird to rub her right cheek on the door frame. Not willing to move the cuckoo where it sits on its support, I slightly bent the wire connecting the bird and the door. Hope tilting the cuckoo down a touch will keep her from coming in contact with the door frame.
@dperry428
@dperry428 5 жыл бұрын
Sometimes the metal base upon which the bird is attached is not centered on the door opening and will rub or snag on the door frame. Moving the bird one way or another is simply a matter of loosening the screw that holds that base on the perch rod, moving the bird left or right and retightening the screw.

I'm glad you found a solution. Sometimes, it can be maddening to find a tiny maladjustment that keeps a cuckoo clock from working perfectly. It's one of the reasons that many clock repair people do not like to work on cuckoo clocks. It can take a great deal of patience to get things adjusted just right and, if you're in the business of fixing clocks for a living, profits quickly go over the cuckoo nest.

how to know the running time of a movement as no weights available thanks Sir
@dperry428
@dperry428 5 жыл бұрын
I assume you are asking how to identify a one-day movement from an eight-day movement. Normally, the gears that make up the time train will be 3 in number in a one-day clock and 4 in an eight-day clock. For most people, identifying that way is difficult if they don't work with clocks. My suggestion would be to attach a container such as a cloth bag to the clock, add weights such as stones, sand, nuts and bolts, or other objects until the weight is sufficient to keep the clock running. Weigh the resulting bag. If the weight is from about 200 grams to about 500 grams, it is likely a one-day clock. An eight-day clock will require 1000 grams to 1700 grams or more. Weights for the clock can then be purchased from a clock supply house such as this one. frankenmuthclock.com/collections/all/weights

There are so many things that can be the problem, it is not possible to exactly solve the problem without examining it. Running the movement outside the case with the bellows not attached allows the bellow lifts to not only be in a lower position than when in the case, but also the lifts are without any load on them. The lifts are free to simply move out of the way of the star wheel cogs that lifts them. Under load and in a different position with the bellows attached,, is a different story, First, look to see that the bellows, themselves, are not being lifted too far. If one or both of them are, the movement will jam. You'll have to bend the lift wires down enough that the bellows are not lifted so high. Is the star wheel that lifts both the gong hammer and the bellows lift wires in a position that allows it to start running before it begins lifting the hammmer? If there isn't a "running start", even a small one, the movement may stall at the very beginning of the strike. Will it strike with the back cover off the case? If so, the hammer could be jamming on the gong or the back cover itself. Is the wire from the left bellow that lifts the bird's tail under the tail and not catching on a part of the case or the other bellow? Is the latch on the front door unlatched? Is the bird positioned so it isn't catching on the door frame? Is the wire from the bird to the door catching on something? These are just SOME things to look for, but not all. There are just too many things that might be causing a problem. You need to carefully analyze what is going on, but start with what I've suggested. I'd primarily look at the bellows and bellow wires.

My question is.. each of the coo whistles doesn't have a screw nor nail holding them in.. Is it glued instead? If so, I guess I could use a black marker and draw a line along the side of each whistle so as to know how to line them up? My clock has 2 birds on each side - instead of those squirrels.. Your video is helping me a LOT! I appreciate them.. since I cannot afford a horologist's price to fix mine. ummm do you by chance accept folk's cuckoo clocks for fixing? Would it be expensive? I'm on a small soc. sec. budget.. I had given the clock to someone.. but it came back not working properly.. Upon thinking about it.. I'm a bit scared to work on it.. Would you consider fixing mine after all? Thank you.

If you work on your clock, pay attention to the levers on the front of the movement. Striking 14 times is indicative of the rack sticking or not being held as it is lifted, a sign of sticky levers, which should never be oiled. Sounds like the whistles have been glued in. Could have been the person who worked on your clock last. As I said in another of your comments, I can't take on any more repairs until next fall and winter season. I'm still trying to catch up with those that were waiting when I missed a year of repairs while having my hips and knee replaced.

@@dperry428 Thank you.. I will try and work on my clock. I appreciate being elderly.. I'm 70.. heh. No worries. If by chance I can't fix my clock, I'm not in a hurry.. and if by chance you may have an opening .. maybe next winter you might help me out? I'll at least let you know how my attempt works out.. I love my clock and I hope it will run again..

@@dperry428 Thank you so much. I love my clock.. it's been with me for some years. I don't have a lot of tools, and I'm rather hesitant to try fixing it. I can easily wait until September to see if you might fix it and such.. A few months ago, I did take off the hands and numeral plate and looked inside. I noticed that a long spring wire was out of place, and it seemed that the rack may have been bent a little [hard to tell]. I then put the plate and hands back on.. and it's just hanging on my wall .. The clock is beautifully painted and not solid brown like others. I'm happy to wait for you.. if that's ok.. (^_^) -- oh, and I just noticed that the cuckoo never stops cuckoo-ing.. the chain runs all the way to the floor..

If it's running down to the floor, either the rack is not being lifted or the warning (stop) pin is bent or missing.

Apparently, you didn't get my reply so, here it is, again. I only work on clocks during wintertime. Wait until the end of October, make a comment on this video then that contains an email address. I hold comments for review. With an email address, I can contact you and delete the comment without its being published. We can then discuss your clock and, when I am assured you are reliable and not some internet kook, I'll arrange repair. I only take on a few clocks each year.

Any idea of the time period when this clock was made?
@dperry428

I'm a bit conflicted on the date. The back says 'Made in West Germany'. That puts it between 1949 and 1990 or so. The back also says, 'A25 84'. If the A is a date code, it could be 1970, 1990, 2010. The 'Made in West Germany' eliminates the 2010. If the 84 is the date, then it is 1984. However, the removable star wheel dates it to before 1976 when they started using press-on star wheels. So, either the A or the 84 is NOT a date code. One of them likely IS a date code. It's also possible that the star wheel was originally pressed on and replaced with a star wheel with a set screw. In that case, the clock would have been made in 1984. If not, the set screw star wheel is original and the clock was made in 1970. My best guess.

For what is is worth, I have a similar clock that has a movement marked A 25-84, also West Germany. From what I can tell the only difference between the two clocks is mine has a music movement as well as a second door with a man that comes out when the music plays. I looked at my star wheel and it is a set screw style as well. If the previous owner was honest, my clock has never been used, taken apart or repaired in any way. There isn’t any tool marks on any of the fasteners holding the movement, nor is there any other indication it has ever been maintained or even put together. It was still in the original box and looked factory packed. I’m going to assume the A is the date code. Hope this info helps you as well.
