This era of machine is from when I was working in an arcade. I appreciate that they didn't all have to be tied to some intellectual property like all the new ones seem to.
@EsotericArctos3 ай бұрын
The link to intellectual property ( IP ) is what makes them the money. It outweighs licensing fees. With that said, it is not tied to the IP as such. The companies pay a licensing fee, and they get the rights to make the game. This has been going on for a long time. Go back to EM days, Wizard comes to mind. OR maybe the KISS one in the earlier solid state era. Licensing has been used for decades to sell games. If you were meaning IP as in the design of the electronics, well..... that goes back a long time too. Gottlieb still protect their IP by restricting the schematics.
@christhompson20063 ай бұрын
@EsotericArctos I understand all that, it just seems like every single new game is based on an existing movie franchise or something similar. I guess that's what draws people in, but I find it to be kind of a turn-off.
@shivorath3 ай бұрын
@@christhompson2006Not every new game is like that, it’s just the ones that aren’t (Galactic Tank Force, Total Nuclear Annihilation, Dialed In…) are not very popular so that perpetuates the idea that a successful machine has to have a licensed IP. I’m still unsure about that… GTF didn’t fail because of theme, it failed because it was a buggy mess of code. And TNA set out to do exactly what it accomplished… create a unique game that fuses old and new and appeals to a niche group of fans rather than mass appeal, and Dialed In… well I don’t know much about Dialed In honestly. Regardless, I think an unlicensed theme can succeed but I don’t blame manufacturers from looking at the sales of recent games without an IP and saying they don’t want to take that risk.
@JordanManfrey3 ай бұрын
@@shivorath I mean you really can and should blame corporate leaders for taking the least risky approach. Anybody can read sales and marketing reports and do the obvious thing. That’s not real leadership if 100% of your direction is based on previous performance data, the data becomes the boss and everything goes on autopilot. Not sure why that’s worth a giant salary. It’s much harder to bet on yourself, and the few who can do that successfully are the ones who should be in leadership positions.
@TalkingWallsPhotography3 ай бұрын
@@christhompson2006 I agree. But that's how pinball survives today. You can't just decide to make a Taxi or Black Knight or Roadshow. It needs to appeal to the homebuyer now. The older generation like this machine was the classic era.

I also see these as "new" machines. But some people don't get this. A former boss called me because he had heard that I repair old pinball machines. I told him that a Dr. Who was way too new for me and that I had no experience with it. He responded by saying: "You're still going to fix it!" A few days later he called and asked "where do you live exactly? I'm in your street with the machine in my truck." So I couldn't refuse anymore. Eventually I managed to get the machine completely fixed. Fortunately you had given me the necessary self-confidence.

Helpful video. I disassembled the WW I have 4 years ago and took lots of photos to get it reassembled, but your video will come in handy because I got a new playfield and this time I have to remove everything, top and bottom. The one mystery with the design of this game is how hard it can be to get the ball up the left ramp. I rebuilt the right upper flipper and lowered the angle of the ramp but it is very hard for me to get the ball to climb the ramp. Please make a video of the game in play and lets see what it takes to get up the ramp so the ball comes down to the right side of the game. 😊 I'm wearing your "It's Broke" t-shirt to PAGG in two weeks.

Did you ever have to make a mold of the old ramp and resin pour for a new clear ramp that’s not manufactured in a pinball Machine
@LyonsArcade3 ай бұрын
I've never had to do that but it would be fun!
@mcpozzm63213 ай бұрын
Poured resin would be insanely difficult to get right. If I had to, I would use high-grade (w/minimal styrene content) acrylic in 1/8 or 3/16". A "run" would consist of a floor, for the ball to run on, and a left and right fence, spaced away from the floor with 1/4 - 3/8 tubing and held on by a decorative nut. The floor section would of course be wider to accommodate the spacers which hold up the left and right fences. Plot the shapes on the acrylic sheet, cut them out on the bandsaw, sand to final shape, wet-sand and polish the edge to transparency.

As far as that Windex goes..yeah. you can tell by looking at it that the 'commercial' stuff is more concentrated..and probably gives off more fumes, which is probably part of why the non-commercial stuff is weaker. Not to mention most commercial uses would demand faster results than the average residential user.
