Very nice and clean repair, just a tip: you can loose a bit the nut of the hinges and put some oil in it. This will reduce the pressure of the hinges, avoiding the laptop case of breaking again.

That trick with the baking soda and "super glue" is brilliant! I've used it before to reinforce screw mounts and fix cracks like in this video. A word of caution: During the chemical reaction that solidifies the baking soda, the area gets quite hot. So build the material up in layers if you need more thickness. Otherwise the prolonged heat from a thick glob might warp the part you are trying to fix. ;-]

I think epoxy is a lot better and much more long term solution fix cause I've done the baking soda trick before because when I tried to open my laptop for cleaning the screw mounts came with a solidified baking soda and glue block XD it was a hassle to re-attached it again but when I tried to recreate the shape of the mount with the epoxy it never came out and stay solid up to this day

I've been looking at using a heating gun with staples, as used on large plastic parts, to add structural strength to broken plastic computer parts. The baking soda or epoxy can then be added to cover it up and add more strength

To answer some of you: Yes, of course epoxy is better, but it is also very thick and not easy to work with, for precision work. Unless you buy the really good stuff. In very tight spaces, and if applied properly, I found the superglue/baking-soda solution to be very efficient. Any good epoxy is way more expensive, particularly compared to what a hobbyist might already have at home. And since I believe these videos are aimed at hobbyists and not professionals, I consider this to be an important factor. But, again, for certain types of breaks, where we expect there to be structural stress, then yes, epoxy is better.

Always an inspiration Andrew. You inspired me to take up electronic restoration as a hobby a few years back so I could confidently restore my everyday laptop to like new condition. I've since gifted that laptop to my sis so she can use it for her business, and for a 2017 laptop it's still running perfectly for her and very speedy.

Thank you very much bro for a new kind of laptop maintenance, and the super glue trick and baking soda is a good alternative. When guleing palmrests like that it is always a good idea to loosen the hinges a little bit. There is a nut on the enf of a hinge. Loosen it a little bit to compensate for the less strong palmrest after guleing. This will also prevent further cracks or degradation.

For repair broken case like this you need EPO besides superglue. 1. You put fallen pieces back where they belong with super glue to hold their positions. 2. You surround these pieces with EPO to hold. Super glue stays too fragile and falls off again if used alone. Epo supports. 3. Very important thing is cleaning the hinge. I sometimes loosen it up a bit. Hinges collect dust and get tough, thats why the case starts to crack in first place.

Nice refresh and repair on the cheap! I don't like soldered RAM as it limits upgrades, but I do like how you can have an M.2 SSD as well as a SATA SSD/HDD. Also, for best results when gaming, always use the charger, performance on battery power is almost always limited for better battery life, though gaming whilst on battery power will almost literally destroy both battery life and battery longevity.

The video was quite fun. But as far as I've heard, people usually recommend not to use Isopropyl Alcohol on the screen as it may damage the coating on top. Have you seen any cases of this?
@elfedorausado
@elfedorausado Жыл бұрын
1. You CAN use alcohol as long as it’s a one-time thing. It’s the continued use what damages the coating. 2. I believe he mixes the alcohol with anti-static glass cleaning fluid; that reduces the strength of the alcohol to a point where it’s not damaging the coating on the screen. I personally use a mix of 2 parts alcohol with 8 parts distilled water in a plastic spray bottle. I use it on my cellphone, TV screen and laptop monitor. So far, no issues.
