I usually balance these batteries with a hobby- charger (skyrc imax b6 AC ). If it's my battery, I'll even recharge the 0.6V cells as well ( if it takes a charge... Sometimes it's just good as a hand warmer and then into the bin ) .

Great demonstration, makes me tempted to pick up some failed batteries from others and see if I can recover them like this. I think though that buying a replacement cell would have cost more than a couple of Euros? Just going by when I bought a similar cell for something else, can't remember if it was the same size though

Aliexpress for 18650 are about €2 but in saying that you do need the quality batteries that can handle fast discharge like when a drill or cordless angle grinder demands power straight away. But if it’s only 1 or 2 batteries cell required to bring the entire 18v battery back to life it’s well worth the time doing so

Great video you did a great job I do the same kind of videos on batteries amongst other things. I am going to start marking my bad cells like you do. I spot weld the cells in instead of soldering. I have done full builds pcb board replacements etc.

Pity the do not have a mechanical fixings on these batteries make it easter to replace the cells.Wonder if a Parkside battery pack would fit in the bosch shell

Yes you can put any 18650 cells in to these batteries but the C rating has to be the same, ie you can’t use laptop batteries

Handy video , we all have a power tool that's not lasting, I think the hardest part is finding the right replacement cells 👍

AliExpress is where I got mine for the other battery pack. But always read the reviews and don’t believe anything the sellers say

So, I have a Bosch 18 volt, 4 Ah battery. When I press the button on the back, no lights. When I put it in the charger, nothing (acts like there is no battery in the charger). Will it be one dead batter or will it be the circuit board or how can I tell?
@stevenharpervw Жыл бұрын
Open the battery and like I Did, test each cell should be between 3-4volts you will probably find one dead cell and you can just replace it like I did

@@stevenharpervw Awesome! The factory sent me a new battery but since I have this one just laying here, I figure I may was well take a shot at fixing it. Thanks!

This cell don't have 3000mAh, but 1300... and those that were already in the battery have 1500...

Where does it say the mAh on them ?
@norbertkortas58 Жыл бұрын
@@stevenharpervw Really? Where did you get that they have 3000mAh. Samsung has the inscriptions 13Q or 20R on its cells add two zeros to it then you have the capacity but first what you should do is find the datasheet

Interesting. Thanks for the info

@@stevenharpervwBy adding one 1300mAh battery to a 1500mAh group you’ll be either stressing that 1300mAh battery or, in case there’s a BMS, the capacity of the package will be lowered to that of the 1300mAh battery. It would be better to test the capacity of each individual cell (most 18650 chargers can do that) and then add a battery that best matches the other ones Also: that one battery at 3.8V might be on its way out too. If not, I’d highly recommend to charge that one individually to at least match the rest of the group. All the best!

Samsung INR18650-15Q is rated for 18A discharge. You replaced it with Samsung INR18650-13Q that is rated 15A... The capacity is also different, increasing the chances the pack gets dangerously inbalanced. This is the generation that doesn't have individual cell monitoring... Don't do it!
@stevenharpervw8 ай бұрын
Oh I didn’t know there was a difference between one being 18A and the other being only 15A would if make any difference the fact that the rest of the battery pack is old, would the over all capacity, have also dropped ?
@jcvjcvjcvjcv8 ай бұрын
@@stevenharpervw Mixing different batteries into a series pack without individual monitoring (like all newer 18V packs have) is just asking for trouble. Having lower capacity might cause that cell to be over-discharged and wear out sooner. If it has higher capacity it might cause the other cells to discharge too much. This pack only monitors series voltage. Then when charging it might over-charge (reach >4.2 before the total pack voltage is anywhere near 21V)... and overcharging Lithium causes a lot of trouble.. The soldering might have already damaged it from the get-go. There is a good reason they are spot welded instead of soldered. There have been a few fires when charging these older batteries that lack individual monitoring and Bosch was forced to change their design. With previous tech Ni-MH and Ni-Cd batteries individual monitoring wasn't necessary because they would 'never' burst into flames like overcharged lithium cells do.

It is very dangerouse to mix different cells. Here is what you get when you ask Google " does alithium ion battery cells in a battery need to be same?": Yes, the lithium ion battery cells in a battery should be the same or as close to the same as possible: Performance: Batteries with well-matched cells perform better and last longer than those with mismatched cells. Safety: Unbalanced battery cell voltages can cause explosions or fires. Connectivity: Mixing battery types or brands can cause connectivity issues. Here are some things to consider when using lithium ion batteries: Voltage: The voltages of the entire series-connected battery cells in a battery pack should be equal. Capacity: The cells should have equal capacity (Ah). Make and size: Never mix different makes and sizes. Maximum charge and discharge current: The time it takes to charge a lithium battery can be affected by its maximum charge and discharge current. Thermal runaway: Different types of lithium-ion batteries have different temperatures at which thermal runaway events occur. For example, LFP batteries are the safest.
