This video did exactly what it was intended to. I’m not gunna even bother opening mine. When pulling the mower backwards on of the wheels will get stuck some times. Assumed something in the gear box went bad. Was gunna open and look. Not gunna bother anymore

I changed plastic gear with metal bronze gear and than cover plastic drive wheels with rubber-car tires . Drives much better.

@@MowerMan Actually making metal gear was cheaper than buying new original gear box. Disassemble and assemble with no big problem. Only changing dirty oil and cleaning all parts with petrol.

Sometimes a parts mower is cheaper than a replacement part...the drive on my Craftsman ate itself but a similar mower with a good drive and rotted deck was $15, and has a fine engine to boot..

The transmission on my Troy-Bilt self propelled mower stopped working and it turned out to be something broken in the bottom part of the plastic trans housing itself..probably me trying to bang a replacement wheel onto the axle. Be careful with any horizontal stress on the transmission!.. I bought a replacement trans as i couldn't find just the bottom half of the housing clam shell for sale online. Interestingly all the gears inside, worm gear..big gear etc are steel so i kept the old trans and axle as a unit for spares in case the new trans breaks. The old one only stopped working due to a transmission housing structural failure. Great vid as always Sir! 🙂

My self propel has just gone on mine. Its Kaaz with a Kawasaki engine. Good mower has given me good service. Don't think its the cable that's worn and will probably cost me some cash. Glad I don't need it much till next year now. Guess I better find someone to repair it though.

I was going to replace the transmission on my troy built with a honda mower. IT rear wheel. The drive works great... all gears. Unfortunately it does not disengage. Stays on. Thinking of taking it apart.

The sharp edges of the dog clutch ramps had worn away on my qualcast. Found same looking ones new for £30 but not sure if exactly the same inside

I have a Cub Cadet CC 550 SP rear wheel drive. I was wondering if the real wheels should turn freely forward or backward independently? When the front is lifted up and it’s just on the real wheels, the mower will turn left, but when trying to turn right, the rear wheels lock up. Is this normal?

Yes i would think so although you can sometimes adjust the honda ones. Also make sure the cable is not slack

My lawn mower has self drive but has no belt fitted. The cable is snapped and also the spring. Does the spring hold the lever disengaged? And the cable to engage? It looks like my spring is attached to the cable?!?

I added oil and grease to mine which is from the 1980's (metal gear box) and now it no longer turns when engaged. I can't understand how adding lubrication to a working self propel made it no longer work.

Gearboxes for mowers are sealed units. Just buy a complete replacement box. Dont take them apart. Its not worth it. (Pro tip)

Thanks for all your videos. My Briggs & Stratton XC35 is stuck in Self-Drive. When I pull the lever the Self-Drive engages and off we go, unfortunately when I release the cable the lever spring on the Self-Drive no longer has enough tension to return the lever and disengage the Self-Drive. I either have to re-tension the spring or buy a new one. This obviously means I will have to dismatle the rear axle from the mower. Is this as straight forward as it looks?

every brand is different as far as material used to make the transmission. I have seen snow blowers with brass gears chew themselves to scrap. Then all you can do is replace the auger unit. Lawn mowers are the same. Even metal can wear its self out. Now days they are designed to be replaced.

The wheels do not go on the end of the axles, a small gear for the gear reduction goes there.

I have the same thing in a Troy Built front drive mower but when I pull the lever the wheels chatter on the cement. Shouldn't there be a slow engagement to keep the wheels from jumping or chattering.

A wee bit disappointed, I know it is my transmission gear assembly that was 'eaten alive' and need replacing, I wish you would have gone the extra step and explained how hard it is to replace, before I order the expensive part, with expensive shipping, and a 25% restocking fee if I can't do it. Otherwise, good video, for someone who doesn't have to replace the bleeding thing!

Great video, I have a Honda lawnmower. If you hold the rear of the lawnmower up so the wheels are off the ground they spin but when they are on the ground it's not strong enough to move the lawnmower. Does that sound like the plastic gear is stripped?

I had the same problem- The belt may need replacing. Through time they stretch and loose the ability to spin the cog.

+william murray also the drive pully on the engine crankshaft above the blades. it will wear a belt groove in it and the belt will wear quick and will not grab the belt so the belt slips. If after the pully and belt are replaced and the tension is adjusted and it still doing the same thing, then it's the transmission going bad. Doublewidesix on you tube shows a Honda trans repair that might work.

surprising how little amount of oil is inside the gear box. I took one apart thinking oil would drip , but almost nothing was inside.

Should be about 1/2 cup of 75W90 gear oil.

What grease/oil should be used in that type of transmission? I just took mine apart and the grease is super dark and smells. I know most of the time this is a lifetime type of thing and not supposed to be serviced by the end user but just like anything else I'd like to replace it with new so it lasts another 9 years.

I just watched a video showing a complete rebuild of this type of transmission. It was not that difficult, what is the point of your video if the end result is buy a new transmission or buy a new mower? This is why we have so much junk filling landfills, and people are always broke!
