Another option would be to apply black silicone and use clear packaging tape as an external mold surface. The tape will match the surround contour and keep the repair smooth and flush. Then remove tape when finished.

I wanted to try the clear on i bought it too i might do a layer over the black? It dont look bad. Keep in mind these were cut all the way around. So excited to hear how they sound in a day or so

If you wanted to improve the appearance of the speaker you could just cut a circle of paper to mask the centre out to the ribbed rim and then spray the outer rib with shoe colour spray which dries in a flexible way and would mask the smeared repair patch. I've done this with home audio speakers and it works well. Also you can use ordinary silicone (not necessarily black) to patch a hole and if you want to reinforce it just cut a small strip of tissue paper to shape and dab it on the silicone while fresh. Let it dry for a couple of hours and then apply a thin smear of silicone on the paper (use a cotton bud and take care not to tear the paper). Once you have done that then just spray it with the shoe colour stuff and wait a good day or so before running sound through the speaker. You now have a repair that will last the life of the speaker.

@JordanMoree
@JordanMoree 3 жыл бұрын
Superglue dries hard and will eventually pull on the surrounding areas and cause it to tear more or in other places. The E6000 would work good. It’s flexible. You probably don’t need the silicone sealant as most sound bar subs don’t hit very hard. They’re just made to add extra bass to the tv sound.

That would be a stupid move. Using silicone on any speaker repair is the wrong move, period! It would have been better if he had replaced the surround with new ones, and done the job right the first time. When a surround tears, or opens, it's time to replace them with new ones. Might also add, you can over rate the wattage on a speaker system, without doing more added damage, and possible amp burn-out. What you said is a very dumb move, specially if the amp. supplying the audio, is expensive. Your method of repair could fry the whole amp for good.

@@imfrom210texas That means you're too lazy to do the repair properly as well as up grade it. I have worked in electronics for many, many years and repaired many an amp. that ended up blowing it's outputs because of speaker damage that they have thought using silicone was the best route to take repairing foam. Oh well, that's your choice. In time the foam will give way enough for the voice coil to touch and short out your amp. circuits. Best way is to fix the problem correctly the first time and save money in the long run. When I get one in the shop, I always install new foam and those I do it for are thankful I did. It's a matter of fix it in a rush with a quick fix-up and pay out later for an amp repair. Doesn't matter to me as long as I do my job right the first time. You've been warned.

Dumb move using these glues to fix a torn surround. It would be far wiser to replace the surround with a new set, on both speakers. Fixing with silicone can cause more damage, and possible amp blow out. I would never use silicone on a speaker at all. Do the job right, and replace both surrounds, and the job will be done right the first time.

How can it cause amp blowout?
@waynedavies3185
@waynedavies3185 Жыл бұрын
@@michaelstanton556 When you repair a speaker using glue or silicone the glue and silicone dries harder that what the rubber is in make-up. It leaves around the outside edges weaker, not stronger, and over time it will tear again especially if your using heavy amounts of power to the speakers from the amp. If the siding gives way while you have power going to the speakers, the coils can short out within the magnet and cause the amp's power transistors to blow. If a speaker is working properly, it remains center around the magnet coil and has equal room to move all around the magnet (which is normally the ground side). If the foam gives way and tears again around where it has been repaired, the whole cone will move up and down off center and the wire wound coil (which is positive side), can touch the magnet which is the positive side, thus shorting or frying up out your amps output transistor. You then have a blown amp. that needs repairing. Anytime I have a speaker tear its foam, I completely replace that damaged foam with a new one (in fact I replace both speakers foam rings at the same time. Reason being is most tears in the foam are often caused by the foam being too dried out, or sort of crumbling away due to age so if one goes, it won't be much longer before the other side goes as well so it's better to replace both sides before they short out the amp. especially when using a high-power amp. Repairs to the amp can be quite costly as some outputs are combined with both L&R side outputs in one large IC. Replacing just the foam ring is far cheaper and less work than repairing the amp's outputs along with repairing the speakers. Remember, that foam keeps the speaker cone perfectly center at all times so the wire coil doesn't touch the magnet side while the speaker is working. If that foam gives out anywhere around the rim, the cone can easily move off center when heavy bass is applied. It would be the same as attaching both the + and the - wires together at the speaker wire and crank up the volume. Your amp won't last long and blow the outputs. It's best to do the job correctly at the very beginning and know the speaker won't fail you once you crank it up loud. Your choice on how you do it

@@waynedavies3185 wow ty have a cheap sub would it hurt to just leave a small tear
@waynedavies3185
@waynedavies3185 Жыл бұрын
@@michaelstanton556 That should be for you to decide, not me. Small speakers damaged in the foam area can do the same thing as larger speakers if they end up shorting out the amp. in the coil area. The way I see it, is do the job right the first time round and save having more expensive repairs down the road. Exapmle, if you find a small hole in a water pipe, would you be smart and properly fix that pipe, or just glue it up and hope for the best. Glue might hold and remain sealed for a short time, but if that hole opens up while your away from home, you could end up with a lot of water damage as well as a costly water bill and final repair. Short-cuts don't always work, when the job could be done properly and less expensively. I have repaired many an amp area in many different items over the years due to s[eakers shorting them out. Gluing the paper cone itself may be okay and last, but when it comes to the foam where there is constant movement of wear and tear, gluing will not last. Doing the job right the first time pays off in the long run and it's not hard to do the full replacement to both speakers at the same time. But like I said, it's your choice, not mine. When I repair a speaker, I repair them correctly so the issue is completely gone to history. When someone brings items to me for repair, I do the job right the first time and that means my work is quality work not half-ass. Good luck.

Replacing old surrounds with new ones is the better choice here. If they tear, then they need replacing, due to age of surround ring. I don't repair the rings, I replace the whole ring with new ones, then the repair lasts, and won't end up frying up the amp. itself, due to voice coil shorts. Be smart and replace the surround rings on both sets of speaker at the same time. It's like replacing ball-joints, you don't replace one, without replacing the other at the same time. I give a thumbs down on this video... BIG TIME.
