Great work! As an FYI, the mold will cross contaminate other spaces through the HVAC ductwork and any other opening. 90% of the time the homeowner won’t have a clue, until a kid starts wheezing soon after demolition or the homeowner smells something. 90% of those won’t do anything about it, BUT there’s ALWAYS that ONE owner who will KILL your business!! Another point is that any drywall that has mold has to come out. Can’t spray bleach or anything else on it because it just makes things worse! Call a pro!

Mold spores can be found everywhere, that's how the mold got in those hidden places to begin with! Just stop the moisture and you stop the mold for spreading. Filter any air with hepa vaccuum during the process if you have any concern of spores spreading.

Note on mold. We had a bad mold problem and I went thru 4 gallons of Concrobium, over several applications, before realizing it's simply not effective in porous materials (as the label states). The deeply embedded mold just grows back in a week. Concrobium works by crushing the molecules when drying, but only the molecules it comes into contact with and it has no affect on future growths (ie: the mold re-growing from within). So, after allowing to fully dry, and possibly after washing, sanding, plaining off the infected wood, follow it up with Zesser Mold Killing primer (available in 13oz spray cans). It is the only product that works on porous surfaces like 2x4s. Or even just skip the Concrobium step. I've only used the paint-on gallon version of the primer. It's much thicker so may soak deeper & leave a thicker barrier, but I know for sure the Concrobium isn't permanent. Also, if there's some future leak, it'll protect the wood somewhat. I've taken to applying a coat to all the studs before drywalling. It's an extra "theoretically unnecessary" step, but should there be another leak, it'll somewhat mitigate against stud damage and mold.

Thanks for this! I am about half way through the demo of our shower that didn't have a membrane and water was leaking under the tile floor. I even found plywood and fiberglass insulation that was covered in mold inside the drywall. I'm going to have to have some of the wood cut out and replaced but thanks for mentioning the primer.

You simply need to dull the tip of the nail with your hammer before nailing to avoid splitting. An old carpenters trick I learned back in the early 80's from an old carpenter.

I agree! I’m 74 and while there was drywall repair being done I asked one of the guys if I could try. He said sure. I did and later watched several videos and later asked him to show me how to tape a corner - he did. It was so much fun! I later re-mudded my kitchen wall because it had a bumpy surface. So funny- they were speechless. Pays to pay attention.

I got similar issue on floor. So before replacing for a new wood, I dug majority of mold, and treated the remains of it with mold treatment liquid, to kill it. Nice job of reinforcing! Thanks for video

Yes a couple of weeks ago window leak caused multiple dry rot to stud, I did what you did and splice some of the structure and also laid a piece of pressure treated to the base. I am glad I did it right

I’m redoing a bad shower myself as we speak. My master shower looked about like this one so I can’t tell you how grateful I am for your videos. I’m a DIYer and this is my first shower to completely redo. I feel better prepared watching your excellent videos. I do have one question (who am I kidding-I have a million questions- lol) but here’s this question. When framing up areas of 2x4’s that I’ve cut out, due to rot, can I screw the new boards back into place instead of using a framing gun? You want to use nails when framing load bearing walls because screws will snap as the house settles, nails will bend and remain strong.

Like American Patriot said, Nails are better for framing. You can either nail by hand or gun using 16d common or sinker 3 1/2" nails or you can sometimes use screws but they need to be structural screws and it is dependent on your local code.

Try using Mold Control from Home Depot on that black mold next time. Amazing product! Kills the mold without bleach and whitens the stain.

I use RMR-141. It kills the mold and when it dries the residual acts as a deterrent to future mold growth.

Yes.Totally agree on mold remediation properly done before replacing wood studs. It not only prevents the new studs and future wall from black mold, but adds profit $$$ to your overall job. I won't rebuild any wall without this procedure.

Mold Control is designed for non-porous surfaces only. It is not intended for wood which is porous. RMR-141 is better suited for treating wood.

Here's a secret and since this is an older video no one's gonna see it 🤫 On our most recent video where we're laying Tile, we accidentally cracked a tile. We pulled the entire tile down, removed the adhesive and grout. Re did the whole thing. Stuff like that goes on behind the scenes more than you know! Thanks Arnold

I was thinking the same thing. You can't just cover it up or it'll keep growing and there'll need to be a 4th bathroom renovation. Vinegar kills mold. Most people think of bleach, but bleach makes mold "retreat" to a new area to thrive but doesn't kill it. Vinegar doesn't necessarily make it look any different visually, per say, but it does kill it so it won't keep growing.

As a certified mold remover. I would’nt let any mold in the wall. You should always remove every bit of it at least 16 ‘’ past any bad area . Also PT is not allowed inside. That looks like a do it again job. Don’t let Mike Holmes see this. 🤨

I just did similar job. Ripped out all siding, sheathing, rotted studs, rim joist, bottom plate, everything. Every piece of rot was replaced. Re framed entire corner of house. Important to replace all rotted everything.

Agree on replacing all the rotted everything. However i this video, for the base, the guys put new 2x4 over the rotten base. Removing the base can be done, and other videos show how. After all these guys have done to this site, and so much removal and replacements, I wonder why they did not replace the base board of the wall.

In my experience, whenever I saw cardboard under drywall, it was a makeshift shim for the wrong thickness sheetrock. Saved them a trip, and they never figure anyone will ever see it.

Thank you for showing how to do things right. I just demolished a bathroom from the previous owner who used porous marble everywhere and no waterproofing whatsoever on the shower curb and drywall. It was a moldy disaster leaking water all through the basement. All the framing was rotted 2x2 toothpicks. It truly boggles the mind. I am reframing like you demonstrated and installing a full Kerdi system. No more toxic bathroom.

I know this is coming late, but I'm surprised how casually you handled the black mold. BEFORE replacing the stud patches, you should have used a mold killer spray to kill the mold... Then let dry completely... And then vacuum with a HEPA unit... I'd do the entire bathroom since you disturbed the mold. As for mold on the drywall goes, it should have been removed completely and replaced. Yes, a bigger job, but easily explained to the homeowner. Remember, take the attitude, "I can see it from my house", even if it isn't. Otherwise, great videos showing all the details and problems that can arise.

I remolded my c. 1959 bathroom and added a new shower where the tub was. I also found problems with stud rot, mold and mildew. Like here, I replaced all wood that was rotten, cut short a few stud where they were bad at the sill plate. In my case, and I did this in the winter, I also had to remove and replace some sheeting because I removed the bathroom window. But, I then abated the mold and mildew. Killed it, then sealed it. To be sure, I went the extra step of painting the stud work with a mold resistant paint. Of course, new mold and mildew is not a problem when properly installing the shower and its plumbing.

I have black mold in my house I already removed the drywall I have minimal rotten but m not sure how to deal with it can you share your method with me I'm afraid it's between the exterior metal if I spray it really good is it gonna be ok or do I have to take the outside of my house as a last resort

@@austinstaton5277 First, I am no expert. I am just some guy that bought a home sight unseen. I had success because I removed & replaced all wood studs & sole plates that were infested with mold or mildew. Then to both the new wood and the existing wood not infected, I applied Moldez Mold killer inhibits the growth and spread of mold and mildew. It wipes on and wipes off. I applied this first and let dry. Then I painted all exposed wood surfaces with Zinsser Mold Killing Primer. Finally, I sealed my concrete floor with Red Guard waterproofing and crack prevention membrane--a rubberized sealer to prevent hydrostatic infiltration of moister from the ground (no vapor barrier installed in 1959.) All these products I bought at Home Depot. As to your question about removing the outside wall -- I was able to remove infected studs from the interior BUT and this is a big butt, I had to repair and replace the sheathing because it was nailed to the studs. I did the sheathing work after the weather warmed and installed James Hardy siding to match my existing and covering the now missing window. If it is mildew on the metal you are concerned about, the Zinsser should protect you after you clean the mold that is there now. The key to success in mold control is controlling the moisture and/or water penetration. You should have and use a bathroom fan to remove humidity after showers, etc. ** If you have more than a three foot square area, I'd advise professional mold abatement. The health of you and your family is worth the expense. **

I'm just a DIY'er but I do enjoy your KZbin episodes. One suggestion. Would it be possible, when you make your videos, that you name them in some consecutive order for instance as an example: Mother-in-Law's rebuild, episode 1, Mother-in-Law's episode 2. Yep, those pieces showing mold from the backside need to go, that Sheetrock is toast anyway. The sill plate under the shower valves I would have raised up to level or above existing before setting the pressure treated since I would not want it to be the lowest elevation in the bathroom. Pressure treated is forgiving to water for a while, but not indefinitely.

For production lighting you may what to consider taking the single light and pointing it toward the ceiling at forward angle, not straight up. It would, by partially reflecting off the white ceiling, add fill to the overall area. Something to consider. I like your presentations.

I highly recommend using shockwave (dluted from thre concentrate) in moldy areas being repaired. You don't need a respirator. It kills and prevents mold growth.

Always take the extra couple seconds to bend nails over either with your thumb or hammer. I was the lucky one to step on a proud nail shortly after saying something about it to my guys when we were doing the demo for a house addition. And Imperial blades are the best I've found!

I wish my shower walls had looked that good! We ran into a live infestation and rotten/eaten studs quite a few feet up. The Sheetrock paper was eaten as was the paper backing on the fiberglass insulation. It was horrible! Like the one in the video, it included an outside, corner wall on the first floor. We had to sister/replace 10-12 studs.

I’m in the middle of a similar job myself and agree with most of your methods here. I don’t know if I missed something but I think you should’ve spent a few moments talking about mold remediation. Although I’ve treated all exposed obvious moldy areas, one that stymies me is the moldy and decaying Sheetrock that is behind the studs in an area that isn’t accessible, between the studs and a brick wall. I’m considering breaking it out and wedging cement board in that space or using hardening foam. Have you ever used those in this type of situation?

What are you planning on putting over the insulation. Are you talking about putting the insulation over the sub floor and then your finished floor? You can get heating cords to install under your finished floor with thermostat. Ditra heat it's called. Why do you need the insulation. I have a basement bathroom as well and it's not insulated at all. Floor, ceiling or walls and it doesn't get terribly cold.

You get the rot outa there and open up the pores, maybe drill some fine holes, dam it up to shape and pour. Voila.

Hey StudPack! I’m buying a home, one week left in escrow. I’m an automotive tech, so I’m not scared of a little work. It has roof leaks, master shower leaks, there’s some bubbling drywall in master bedroom and some bad ground drainage. Worried about how bad the studs are gonna be rotted, but we can’t really say no because the house is in such a great area. Serious question...is putting a new bottom plate over the existing rotted one really a quality fix? I have this situation in my garage.

I'm curious what you think about epoxy type wood hardeners. I used one once and it poured on extremely thin and soaked into some dry rotted wood. I'm wondering if something like that would have any benefits to the small amounts of rot that was left in this area. My thinking is that the epoxy would soak in and encapsulate any mold and rot. It would also harden the soft punky wood even though it wouldn't be necessary for strength because of the additional studs. Or would that just a waste of money?

Make sure to prime all spots where the brown drywall paper is showing with an oil based primer. Your drywall compound will bubble unless you do so.

Just curious why didn’t you build a temporary wall to carry load while fixing exterior wall? I think your answer would be shearing would carry weight. Thanks great video.

If you watch the beginning again, he did in fact explain exactly that; the sheathing was adequate to carry the load during the brief time that the studs were being replaced.
