Our best work effort is always substandard and hence sinful. The difference maker is Christ work alone, looking to Him in faith is repentance. Therefore we daily look to Him and trust Him in what he has done and moving forward living by His grace.

Your explanation of repentance is an exact description of my growth and experience of being a saint and sinner. Thank you for clarifying. This subject perplexes many. I love the description of non and Christians. One agrees with God about their sin. One doesn’t. One looks to Christ. One doesn’t. I once asked a co worker (non Christian) if he ever felt guilty or bad about the things (sin) he did. He replied with “huh?, why would I ever feel bad?” As Christians, that response would be very different. When we sin we know we sinned and we do care. We turn to Christ for forgiveness. We seek God to purify us, to cleanse us, and to restore us. The non Christian, not so much.

Amen. Same situation. Many Christians just do not understand how badly some of us are rooted in some sinful nature and to uproot it completely will take a long time. This does not mean we are not aware that it is a sin and that we ought to fight against it with every strength we have.

Repentance IS believing. It's believing something NEW that you didn't believe before about what is most valuable. It's a RENEWING of our mind about VALUE. Our heart automatically DESIRES what we perceive to be most valuable.

This is the Mystery, Christ in us. We, His Children, hear His Voice. Those who believe His Word is His. .....but, many sheep are being lied to about so many things. Praise be to God that understanding theology correctly is forgiven for all who Believe. I never hear anyone point out that this fruit and good works sometimes takes years, sometimes He does not reveal Himself to someone until later in life, and frankly, it takes at least 20 years before you can understand some Truths. We study and pray and seek Him and His righteousness, but there are sheep that have not been discipled and many believers in churches with sketchy doctrine. If you mention time after the halfway point I apologize, commenting on middle of video. Keep up the good work

Something that helped me was, understanding that if I became a sinner, not of my own will, (Adam), why would I be able attain salvation (sinless perfection) on my own? It’s impossible. EVERYTHING is Gods hands, everything from the nicotine, and thc I struggle to get rid of, to my crossing over the Jordan. EVERY LITTLE PART OF “SAVING” US, is allllll in God’s hands.

I was just thinking about this yesterday. We act as if the power of Satan to keep us a sinner is greater than the power of God to keep us righteous. I believe this is why Jesus wept. We must have greater faith in God than in sin, death, man, Satan because God IS greater. “I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” Luke 18:8

Thank you, brothers, for such an encouraging word for us repentant sinners! I know you did not have time to do a complete survey of Scripture as to the nature of repentance as God-initiated, but one verse that I have found helpful in that vein is Acts 11:18b, in reference to Peter's report as to Cornelius, Peter's audience responded: "And they glorified God, saying, 'Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance unto life.'" (RSV).

Faith and repentance are indeed granted entirely by God, and yet they are both in the call to the lost. The explicit preaching of repentance is in the Great Commission (Luke 24:47) and the apostles' evangelism (Acts 2:38, 3:19, 17:30). I would have been interested to hear those Scriptures discussed.

There is a mystery and a sense in which the believer must respond to the gospel, to the law, to the great commission, yet the ultimate accomplishment of this all originates in Christ. All the glory belongs to God, because God creates, re-creates, and fulfills. Our part of response or faithfulness is just a small part of what is. We can only see so much. Behind our obedience is a working and active God. Behind our response to the gospel is the beautiful craftsmanship of the holy spirit. But how? Why in some and not others? That is a mystery, but scripture says it. It is all Jesus Christ.

Another add on, is Moses serpent on the pole. The people needed only look at it to be healed. What would keep someone from looking? Doubt, Pride, Guilt, self condemnation maybe. Christ himself said it was that simple and look at what we are doing today… We’re drawing lines in the sand as if to keep people from “looking”. Or in our case, BELIEVING the gospel is what it claims to be. The only thing that can satisfy the conscience is the blood of Jesus, bc the mind can’t delete things the heart wants deleted. Also something else that helps, is picking 1 battle at a time. Nobody just drops everything in day, salvation is an event, while discipleship and physical “repentance” is a process and comes only by the hand and timing of the Lord. When I turned to Christ I wanted to get of so many things, cigarettes, weed, I don’t drink anymore, but you get the point… but Christ said what’s in your heart? Is that anger I see? Is that bitterness I see? What’s going on in your heart? Let’s look at the hurt, look at the damage in here… My point is, Christ is more concerned with the heart, and once I started addressing and letting go of the anger, the feelings of bitterness, it helped me to see that the guilt, and the shame, the SIN, is not mine anymore. It was taken on my behalf and dealt with so when the trumpet sounds, the reason I’m going home is not bc of how good I did, it’s gonna be bc of how good Christ is, and bc of the eternal blood he shed for me, to purchase me. Christ doesn’t do returns. He isn’t going to purchase you just to leave in the dust. If I buy an old rusty screwdriver, am I going to return it based on performance bc it didn’t do exactly what I thought it would do? No! I knew exactly what it was capable of, so some tools can do more than others, but that doesn’t mean I value the screwdriver any less! It doesn’t mean that it’s useless either! Everyone can be used God, bc of JESUS. This world is filthy along with everyone’s righteousness. The only one who has authentic righteousness is Jesus and he shares his with us so we may return to God as if we never sinned to begin with. Hallelujah and Maranatha! Thank you Jesus for being my savior! Thank you Father for allowing me to believe! Thank you Holy Spirit for living in me despite this wretched flesh! Sorry for rambling and the bad analogies lol

Repentence is not sanctification. Sanctification happens after we receive Christ as saviour and after we are saved. Repentence on the other hand goes along with belief. Repentance and faith are like two sides of the same coin. It goes hand in hand. Repentence is a change of mind. A change of mind regarding who we are, a sinner who is condemned to hell. A sinner who cannot earn salvation by self righteousness or by doing good works. A change of mind towards sin. A change of mind regarding who Christ is. Christ being God and the son of God, our messia, our redeemer, our saviour and the only way to heaven. To change and shift from self righteousness and from false gods to get into heaven. To change ones mind regarding the way of salvation, that it is through grace by faith in Jesus alone. That is what repentance is. Metanoia in the Greek. Sanctification on the other hand is the process of changing us in the likeness of Jesus Christ daily with the help of Holy Spirit. Repentance does not have only one meaning. But in case of salvation, its always a change of mind. In the OT when God repents the original word was hebrew word Nacham which means to regret, feel sorry, to pity, have compassion. In the NT metanoia was the Greek word and it literally means change of mind. This was also translated to repent. A change of mind always for salvation. Again there is a Hebrew word teshuva which was again translated as repent which literally means return, turn away from sin, turning from one thing to another.

Revelation 2 & 3 are good examples of Jesus telling the church what to repent from. Paul also talks about godly sorrow that led to repentance in 2 Corinthians. We also see the goodness of God leads us to repentance. But with John the Baptist repentance prepared the way for Jesus (salvation). I believe that is repenting from trusting in the law of Moses to trusting in the Messiah. The book of Acts also shows repentance for salvation. I think the point of being baptized was to show that the law of Moses could not cleanse us, but Jesus does & that’s why John baptized for repentance & Jesus baptized with the Holy Spirit & fire. Repentance cleanses us (because we no longer trust in law but in Christ for the removal of sin) & believing regenerates us (born of the Spirit, hence being baptized with the Holy Spirit).

We think that repentance means feeling sorry for what we have done, but that is not what repentance is all about. It is very possible to be deeply grieved about our actions, but do nothing to change them. Repentance is a change of mind and that brings in a change in action. For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret whereas worldly grief produces death. II Corinthians 7: 9 - 10.

I suspect here some think that they are saying to rely on self in overcoming sin and ask God for mercy. You thus think that the truth is that they have not come to the end of self and still trying, which is a nightmare doing what you hate to do until you know the grace of God who may rremove the problem or keep it on going. This is not a Cinderella story where one shoe fits. This is the issue with preachers that preach from a paradigmn. I have lived through many paradigmns now at my age and at the end, we are nothing in power nor ability and desperately need to rely upon God for victory. Just as Paul said, I no longer live but it is Christ who lives through me. They are saying if you think it is ok to sin, you are in danger. Amen

Repentance and emotion has always been a big struggle for me because I always feel that my motives on repentance are not entirely pure. And then I find myself in a cycle of wondering if I’m really sorry, and if I’m not then I’m sorry that I’m not sorry because Jesus is so infinitely worthy and I’m not. I have been encouraged by Acts 5:31 where it says “ God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might bring Israel to repentance and forgive their sins. What is repentance and is it necessary for salvation? repentance salvation ANSWER Many understand the term repentance to mean “a turning from sin.” Regretting sin and turning from it is related to repentance, but it is not the precise meaning of the word. In the Bible, the word repent means “to change one’s mind.” The Bible also tells us that true repentance will result in a change of actions (Luke 3:8-14; Acts 3:19). In summarizing his ministry, Paul declares, “I preached that they should repent and turn to God and demonstrate their repentance by their deeds” (Acts 26:20). The full biblical definition of repentance is a change of mind that results in a change of action. What, then, is the connection between repentance and salvation? The book of Acts especially focuses on repentance in regard to salvation (Acts 2:38; 3:19; 11:18; 17:30; 20:21; 26:20). To repent, in relation to salvation, is to change your mind regarding sin and Jesus Christ. In Peter’s sermon on the day of Pentecost (Acts chapter 2), he concludes with a call for the people to repent (Acts 2:38). Repent from what? Peter is calling the people who rejected Jesus (Acts 2:36) to change their minds about that sin and to change their minds about Christ Himself, recognizing that He is indeed “Lord and Christ” (Acts 2:36). Peter is calling the people to change their minds, to abhor their past rejection of Christ, and to embrace faith in Him as both Messiah and Savior. Repentance involves recognizing that you have thought wrongly in the past and determining to think rightly in the future. The repentant person has “second thoughts” about the mindset he formerly embraced. There is a change of disposition and a new way of thinking about God, about sin, about holiness, and about doing God’s will. True repentance is prompted by “godly sorrow,” and it “leads to salvation” (2 Corinthians 7:10). Repentance and faith can be understood as two sides of the same coin. It is impossible to place your faith in Jesus Christ as the Savior without first changing your mind about your sin and about who Jesus is and what He has done. Whether it is repentance from willful rejection or repentance from ignorance or disinterest, it is a change of mind. Biblical repentance, in relation to salvation, is changing your mind from rejection of Christ to faith in Christ. Repentance is not a work we do to earn salvation. No one can repent and come to God unless God pulls that person to Himself (John 6:44). Repentance is something God gives-it is only possible because of His grace (Acts 5:31; 11:18). No one can repent unless God grants repentance. All of salvation, including repentance and faith, is a result of God drawing us, opening our eyes, and changing our hearts. God’s longsuffering leads us to repentance (2 Peter 3:9), as does His kindness (Romans 2:4). While repentance is not a work that earns salvation, repentance unto salvation does result in works. It is impossible to truly change your mind without that causing a change in action. In the Bible, repentance results in a change in behavior. That is why John the Baptist called people to “produce fruit in keeping with repentance” (Matthew 3:8). A person who has truly repented of his sin and exercised faith in Christ will give evidence of a changed life (2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 5:19-23; James 2:14-26). To see what repentance looks like in real life, all we need to do is turn to the story of Zacchaeus. Here was a man who cheated and stole and lived lavishly on his ill-gotten gains-until he met Jesus. At that point he had a radical change of mind: “Look, Lord!” said Zacchaeus. “Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount” (Luke 19:8). Jesus happily proclaimed that salvation had come to Zacchaeus’s house, and that even the tax collector was now “a son of Abraham” (verse 9)-a reference to Zacchaeus’s faith. The cheat became a philanthropist; the thief made restitution. That’s repentance, coupled with faith in Christ. Repentance, properly defined, is necessary for salvation. Biblical repentance is changing your mind about your sin-no longer is sin something to toy with; it is something to be forsaken as we “flee from the coming wrath” (Matthew 3:7). It is also changing your mind about Jesus Christ-no longer is He to be mocked, discounted, or ignored; He is the Savior to be clung to; He is the Lord to be worshiped and adored. BLESS YOU __ooo

Wait….would you say this to a married man that continues to cheat on his wife yet he claims that he agrees with God that, yes, he is a sinner and is sorry? Things are good for a few months, and then he does it again-acts sorry again. And repeat. There is such a thing as worldly repentance vs godly repentance that wasn’t addressed…(2corin) People claim all the time that they are “sorry” and yet they return to their sin. Not buying it. True repentance granted by God gives us power over sin in our lives. (Romans 6) Yes, we realize in our inner being we are yet sinners, (1john) however now we are slaves to righteousness because we are in Christ. (Romans 8) You are allowing people to have a “form of godliness, yet denies its power”. (2 Timothy) I would welcome your comments to address these points.

I find that people who are quick to point the finger at others sin, never apply the heavy handed standard they use on others to themselves. Why don't you start there. God bless.

Repentance for a Catholic is an OATH that he swears. As a result, he is supposedly INFUSED with righteousness and is 100% holy. For the Catholic, repentance is: INSTANTANEOUS; PERFECT 100%; and the RESULT of a free will OATH.

This is honestly far simpler than people grasp.. what is repentance? It is changing your mind.. what is required to change your mind? People change their minds BECAUSE something they did not previously understand, they now do. Who do you think is responsible for that? God is. God is the one who reveals the truth to someone, LEADING them to repent. You will not be having truth revealed to you, except by God. Therefore, it IS God who grants repentance.. when God reveals truth to you, you are so convinced that you literally WILL repent because you see something you did not before.. something so profound, you can't help but repent.

Thank you, Jon and Justin, for a clear Biblical explanation of repentance. I was in the NAR and charismatic for many years, and while they don't use the words 'pietism' or 'lordship salvation,' they teach it. They teach repentance wrongly, too, as if it's something we need to do to 'be free from sin.' I realise this now that I'm out of these movements.

Please prayerfully read the Bible daily to grow in love with Jesus and know His full teaching on repentance and salvation, He is very clear. Especially John 3, we just need to learn about Jesus' message of salvation as it is taught Scripturally then make a choice to love and faithfully follow Him until the end. In John 14 Jesus said those that love Him will follow His commandments, then the following chapter, John 15, is Jesus' warnings, which He further expounds on in Revelation (please read prayerfully entire books for proper context.). Praise God for His amazing grace, love, mercy and forgiveness for providing us a way to repent, 1 John 1:9. We sin daily, we are humbled when we recognize that and turn to God for forgiveness and growth by the Holy Spirit. He is so merciful and faithful to forgive a truly repentant heart. He loves us so much and doesn't want us to harm ourselves or others, His plan is so perfect to protect and save everyone involved. Jesus warns that unrepentant hearts can become hardened, He himself may harden us further just as He did with Pharaoh to prove His power. His warnings are to repent until the end, please prayerfully read John 15, Rev 2 & 3, James 5:20, etc. 1 Corinthians 3 is not about unrepentant Christians being saved and only losing rewards as some isms following a founder teach, but about 'teachers' who have their works burned up when tested by His fire, the teacher will lose his rewards and barely be saved. An unrepentant sinner is in clear danger and will not be saved if he is unrepentant in the end, Rev 2 & 3, John 15, James 5:20, Romans 8, Matthew 7:13-14, 10:34-38, etc. God consistently teaches if we do x, then He will do y. It is taught in every book of the Bible. The prodigal son repented and his father instantly forgave him, so they celebrated. His son was lost and now found. The most beautiful story representing God's gracious forgiveness for a truly repentant lost sheep. Cornelius was counted as righteous for his faith in God, God counted his prayers as a memorial, (Acts 10). Cornelius didn't know of Jesus until he was taught later by Peter, he was used as a vessel of honor for his faithfulness like Abraham was. Jeremiah 18 reveals how God gave man free will to choose to do good or evil, and how He will treat each choice...using the repentant hearts as vessels of honor and unrepentant hearts as vessels of dishonor. We are saved by His grace ' through' our faith, it is clearly written in Ephesians 2:8. Our faith is grown by learning about Jesus, knowing Who He is and having a real relationship with HIm and the Holy Spirit recreates our hearts and minds to be more like Jesus (Rom 8). Men's books, their universities, organizations often miss the 'full' teaching of God which is why we need to devote our time reading His Word prayerfully, knowing it better than anything else under the sun, to test 'all' men's teachings against it and discard anything that doesn't align with His full teachings. Being good Bereans will help prevent isms/man-made doctrines from dividing His church (the one He is building by choosing faithful disciples that desire to follow Him and His Truth). Read and study the Scripture's full teaching on a subject, read the entire chapter, book and search for other teachings. Use a bible study tool, I like www.e-sword.net (download to pc), as it has several features such as lexicon, dictionary, Bible options, various word/phrase search functions, create your own notes on each verse, create your own topics, keep a journal, parallel comparisons, etc. Know the author of an epistle, the purpose of the writing, the audience, date, and search other teachings on same subject, look up the Greek or Hebrew text to know all the options to help clarify difficult passages. The Holy Spirit blesses those seeking after Him diligently providing us with His wisdom and ability to apply it. God is so good, he is no respecter of persons, offering even the least, such as myself, to grow over time honoring Him. Genesis 4:7 explains why God didn't accept Cain's sacrifice, his heart was not right. Some teachers claim that God chose Cain to be dishonorable, but clearly God is not teaching that. Some teachers deny free will, that God makes men saved or unsaved regardless if a person desires to follow God. Though God has done this on occasion using a cold hearted person as a vessel of dishonor such as Pharaoh to prove His power, His sovereign plan, and loving character allowed for man to have free will as seen in most all of Scripture. From Adam and Eve, Abraham, Cain, the disciples, their followers, the church and you and me, there's a plethora of teachings from Old and New Testaments. God's character is loving and just, desiring that 'all' come to repentance and follow Him. Jeremiah 18 explains how God gives free will choice to His people and if they follow His will they would be used as vessels of honor, if they do not repent and follow Him they would be used as vessels of dishonor. He knows everyone's heart and motives, we often times do not, bias and cognitive dissonance are real and powerful. We hate being wrong, pride is ugly, destructive and deceptive, which is why God hates it. Please be very careful, especially with men's teachings and books. Trust in God's Word and the Holy Spirit as you prayerfully read testing all things. Enjoy this amazing journey faithfully seeking His guidance and strength to transform you into Jesus' image until the end, to God be all of the glory now and forever (Matt 6:9, 6:33,) Amen! God bless, grow and protect you all who are desiring Him with all of your heart, mind and soul

That church discipline issue is what Lordship Salvation people always use. "If we say that people don't need to do good works, what if someone takes a crap on the rug?!" I call it the "crap on the rug" objection. We're talking about a vertical relation to God, not horizontal relationships. God's love is unconditional, but horizontal relationships with men are conditional.
