Good video but one very important thing to mention. BEFORE you take the car for a test drive you must pump the brakes until the brakes have a solid feel. If you do not do this the brakes will NOT operate correctly and could cause you to get an a accident.

Another of the reasons why when you start you should loosen the lug nuts a couple of turns before you raise the vehicle at all, like you said, is that if you don't, you could break the lug nuts bolts. I have done that a couple of times before a mechanic told me about loosening the lug nuts before jacking. If you loosen them while the tire is on the ground, you won't break the lug nuts. Most home mechanics can't replace lug nut bolts that easy so it save a bit of time. This is also true if you get a flat on the road. That is where I learned this the hard way and had to have the car towed to get the lug nut bolts replaced before we could get to the tire.

I will call AAA and give them a heads up in case I fail and need to tow my car to the garage. Oh, guess I had better give the garage a heads up too. Maybe pick up that little boot if I can in case it is worn out because my breaks squeal and squeak something awful and I don't know why. It got dark but tomorrow. I’m going to loosen the driver side caliper guide pin bolts too and hopefully that will fix my issue. I over tightened them… oops. This is probably why my brakes got used up super fast too cause last time I loosened them I may have left them on too tight so they were probably always applying brake pressure

Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. That’s a great question and in most cases, the piston will need to be compressed in order to properly fit onto the rotor. @@DIYwithMichaelBorders I only removed the lower bolt and I confirmed on the other side it was spinning while torquing right before I even touched it. I couldn't find a 17 mm crescent nor thin enough adjustable crescent but was able to hold it with some other handheld tool. It only needs 25 ft. lbs. and I'm sure I torqued it over that, even if it does spin. I had also planned to turn the rotors but with less than 40k miles they looked and felt great. Maybe that was one oversight as the pads have a lifetime warranty so probably should have done it right but it drives fantastic now anyhow (used Hawk SuperDuty pads). I was working on a 2016 Highlander but these Toyotas have very similar brake systems.

BTW, the head of the bolt is not stripped. I believe it's the threads?
@mark1952able2 жыл бұрын
I finally removed it by stopping the small bolt head next to the rubber caliper from moving. After checking the bolt it did have a few threads flattened. Will buy a new bolt. If ya have any suggestions, I'm interested...Thanks!

Im confused, why did you add anti sieze lubricant on caliper bracket bolts? Most videos I've seen used threadlocker on the threads of the bolt.

I was told that each time changing the brakes and rotors the brake lines needed to be bled. This will be my first time doing this myself. Did you need to bleed the brakes and if not are there situations that make brake bleeding necessary? Thanks!
@DIYwithMichaelBorders3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. If you are only replacing your pads & rotors, you do not need to bleed system. If you replace caliper or brake lines...which opens up your brake system & allows air into system...you must bleed system. 😎👍🔧🔩
@Summitclym4 жыл бұрын
Please add one important tip: if the rotor is not coming off easily, no need to use a hammer, simple screw a bolt in one or both threaded holes inside the lug bolt hole pattern and the rotor will easily break free.

In lieu of Brake Cleaner, can I use mineral spirits?
@DIYwithMichaelBorders2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching & we haven’t tried mineral spirits. Cant give you a solid answer. 😎👍
@mark1952able2 жыл бұрын
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders Yes. Being Painting Contractor for over 40 yrs., we would have to use Mineral Spirits to wipe the roof flashing prior to painting it. Reason being ? New galvanized metal, a product used to make corrugated sheets, gutters, and downspouts, is usually smooth and is coated with either a layer of oil to prevent white rust or is passivated. Paint applied over this oily surface or clear passivator will peel quickly. Obviously one is not going to paint their rotors, but mineral spirits will remove a thin layer of oil film.

Also, can I substitute other types of lube for brake lube, such as bearing/axel grease?
@DIYwithMichaelBorders6 жыл бұрын
Randy JustRandy Thanks for watching Randy. If these steps are followed, you shouldn’t need to re-bleed Brake system. Just make sure minimal fluid is lost & fluid level remains with proper fill parameters. We recommend using Brake System lubricant. We haven’t used any substitute lubricants. I recently went to my Ford Service Center in Toledo, Ohio, and had my front and rear brake pads and rotors replaced. About 6 days later, I realized that my brakes were beeping or squeaking whenever I tried to brake in drive (forward). On the other hand, if I broke in reverse, there was no such sound. I called them back, I have an appointment 5 days from now to take a look at them. Can you guess what might have gone wrong?

Do you not have to bleed the breaks on these??

Thanks for watching. As long as you just replace the pads and rotors, and not disconnect any brake lines…you shouldn’t need to bleed system. If your brakes are weak after replacing parts. We recommend bleeding system. 👍🧰

Also need to bleed the brakes right?
@DIYwithMichaelBorders2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. You will need to bleed that specific caliper for sure. If you let brake fluid leak out of the lines for several minutes, you will then need to bleed entire system. However, if you remove fitting from old caliper and screw it tight to the new caliper quickly…and not allow brake fluid to spill out…you can get away with just bleeding that exact caliper.

Should the rotor be able to spin easily? Or should it require some strength to spin with or without calipers
@DIYwithMichaelBorders6 жыл бұрын
Toan Lam Thanks for watching & sharing your comment. That’s a great question! You should be able to move wheel by hand & with a little added force. You will notice that the pads will be resting on the sides of the Caliper which is normal. It is not normal however to have the pads compressed to a point where you can’t move it by hand at all...no matter how hard you try. This is an indication that your rotor, pads, or caliper is not properly installed nor aligned. This may lead to brakes locking up & smoking...no fun!
