Good guide! =)) Today, I replaced/upgraded my mobo, ram, and cpu to i5. First, I uninstalled my old mobo chipset drivers, lan drivers since it's from realtek to an intel lan, I didn't uninstall my video drivers since i'm gonna be using the same video card. I didn't edit anything in registry. Shutdown and then installed the new HW. No problems booting from my ssd. I was able to login to windows and reinstalled chipset drivers, etc. One thing though, you will need to reactivate your windows and call their support if re-entering the product key won't work. Good luck on your upgrades.

Good guide for 2015 as always from Brian. But recently changed motherboard with same CPU and booted into windows, installed all the new drivers and came in conflict with the old in a scale the computer couldn't even boot, you got bsod at loading and it is inaccessible, unfortunately i had to reinstall everything, $1000 in value work lost/corrupted and had to do all over again, took me 1 month to built it again.

The instruction here skipped over an important step: _ After putting in the new mobo, you said boot from CD/USB. But what's on it? you have to be very clear here. _ People using this guide will wonder: is it windows? is it the paragon software? is it the mobo drivers disk? More tech savvy people will understand it, but obviously you can do better here.

I have some software installed on two separate SSD's and their launchers on the main Windows 10 boot M.2 drive. Assuming that the drive labels are correct after hardware has been replaced. I had a Gigabyte H87 mobo that recently failed on me and I replaced it with an Asus B85 mobo (it was the only 1150 board I could find reasonably priced from a reputable vendor). All I had to do was install the new mobo, boot from the old SSD that had Windows 10, and Windows did the rest. No need to clean old drivers or anything else other than reactivate Windows 10.

Great video! Is there any program that can make a copy of all the current drivers on a windows machine and extract them in to a folder? I know what my original drivers were.. but I've updated them since I first installed the machine a few years ago. So I'm wondering if there is an easier way to now maintain a backup of the current drivers?

Bit late but I'd imagine if the repair gives you the option to select a device to download the drivers from such as the install CD of the motherboard it will probably work.

But the Windows Key is set to the old MB and Bios. So then, what to do about that? Either reinstall the OS (which would make this video redundant) or call MS to get a new key, which you would have to purchase because chances are, your Key when going through the Phone activation would be locked.

Thankyou Brian :-)) Hmm ive used paragon for moving data to a new ssd drive and general partition work, but never thought they did os tweaking for mobo deaths, ive usually said repair from the original install dvd, or just done a full install, windows sometimes needs a refresh :-) I was thinking the remote regedit program to ditch the hardware list, i know you have done the registry way but i cant remember the down side, sorry brian, brain fade :-(

simplest way, install new motherboard, any you fancy. start in safe mode, install motherboard driver. restart, connect to internet then update drivers

If you're moving from AMD to Intel or vice versa, or if the new motherboard uses a chipset from a different manufacturer than the old one, you need to do a little more preparation work. change over the mobo and cpu, switch on in safe mode and upgrade your storage device drivers after selecting the correct boot order by pressing f2, del, f10 or whatever it prompts you on start up. Also make sure you have your Windows setup disc and your Windows CD key. If you're upgrading a Windows XP installation, boot from the Windows XP CD. Follow the normal instructions for installing Windows XP, but DO NOT select reformat or perform a clean install. Instead, follow the prompts for a repair install. What that will do is update the storage driver to one that Windows will recognize when it boots. This also works with Windows 7 upwards, using the 'Repair My System' option. In both cases you'll need to reenter the Windows key. you should find this on a sticker on the side of your case. if you change from Intel to Intel on win7 or above it pops up after safe mode that it's needing 're entered but it does this automatically. good luck
