Replace Headlights in Your Lexus SUV

Man, I really appreciate you doing this video. Used it to replace my headlights. I have normal sized hands but unusually dainty fingers, and was able to do it from the top using this video as a guide because I couldn't look and do at the same time. If you'd like to go that route, some advice: 1) Remove the washer fluid inlet by pinching the prongs together and pulling it up. 2) watch this video a few times to visualize the space so that you can do it blind. 3) It's a tight space and you're hands will be bruised. Gnash your teeth and get at it anyway. 4) Go very slowly. If you drop the bulb you're screwed. After you remove the burnt bulb, push the gap as wide as you can so that you can insert the bulb without hitting anything. 5) It's easier than you think.

Hey Clint I think you may have it backwards. It's the high beam bulbs that you can get to by removing the cover and the low beams are the ones that take some extra work. At 0:28 you can even see the high beam symbol on the cover that you remove. Otherwise, very helpful.

This is a really helpful video - thanks! IMPORTANT - As another user already mentioned, he got the High and Low beams backwards. HIGH beams are easy to reach, LOW beams require pulling the headlight assembly out. In addition to the screws he shows (at least on my model of the 2007 RX 400h), there's another 10mm headlight mounting screw that needs to be removed. On the passenger side, it's behind and below the windshield washer reservoir. On the Driver side, it's behind and below the Relay Fuse box. I also removed the 5 screws that attach the underside of the front bumper to the plastic undercarriage shield. They were easy to remove and made moving the bumper a lot easier. I STRONGLY suggest buying new plastic retainer clips BEFORE starting this project as many of them simply crumbled to pieces due to age -- and the top 5 bumper clips are bigger and longer than the other clips used for pieces that cover the engine, etc. Last tip: Make sure to research the EXACT headlight bulbs your model uses. It wasn't until I had the headlight units out that I discovered my Low beams used HID bulbs (crazy expensive) instead of the standard bulbs that most were equipped with - which meant another trip to the parts store.

I have a comment and an update. -The comment by @chubam... was useful - thank you. -I have a 2008 RX400H and the bulb is not the "L" configuration that you show. It's a "HID Xenon D2S" and it is held by retaining clips once the connector is removed (inside the cover). Note that I have a couple of reference photos but don't have a way to attach them.

Thanks for the video Clint! Successfully changed my HID bulbs and blinkers at the same time thanks to your video. With my HID headlights I had an extra screw on each side. Passenger side was below the washer fluid input and driver side was under fuse box. Needed a 6 inch extension on the 1/4 drive rachet. Excellent video!

That's the high beam bulb on the inside, low beams are the outside. All cars all the time.

Great tutorial Clint very helpful for sure. I beleive you have the hi & low beams backwards though, the hi beams are the inboard bulbs and the low beams are the outward bulbs, I have the OEM Hid setup on my 2008 RX350 and tried to replace them without success, I'll refer to your excellent instructions and remove the headlight assembly.

On my 2008 RX 350 the high beams are on the INSIDE and the low beams are on the OUTSIDE of the car.

2009's low beams are outside too. I thought that only low beams have the covers. This video is not correct for other models at least.

most of the Lexus RX have low beam on outside, probably just this rx400 is other way around.

Thanks for posting this but I give up. I have the exact make, model and year (2007 Lexus RX400h) but I still cannot remove the headlight. It's loose but will not pull out and I'm afraid to force it. Guess I'll go get screwed at the dealer. ☹

The 2006 RX330 is similar, but has one more bolt. The bolt is inside the engine compartment by the high beam headlight bulb.

Mine is 2004 RX and low beam has d2r xenon hid. Not sure how to change it to led.

Amazing Video Thank you.. however in Canada the High beam is the easy one.. the low beam is the impossible one. Because in Canada we have something called DRL daytime running lights. Hence the high beam (easier inside bulb) acts as a drl when your lighting system is off

I have a 2008 RX350 and the DRLs/high beams use halogen bulbs. Have any of you tried swapping it with LED? I tried a couple brands of 9005 LED bulbs from Amazon, one of them having a built in canbus. The high beams work but not DRLs. I then got a resistor but both brands of LEDs still didn’t work.

I just finished this job. Most time consuming was fiddling with the damn plastics. And I broke the right side top mounting post. But now I have working headlight low beams. I used Osram bulbs that come with 4 year warranty. They better last 4 years 😂 and cost only 20€ a piece.

From what I can tell, these should still work fine as it is the entire headlight assembly that moves and not just the bulb.

I also have a 2008 RX350. Low beams are HID and projectors. The DRLs/high beams share the same halogen bulbs. I’m not having any luck replacing those halogens with LEDs.

That will help you on one side assuming you don't have large hands but you will still not be able to get to the other side.

@@melissarij8687 I don't have the part numbers specifically but what I recommend is you go to Amazon and search for Toyota retainer clips. That is what I did and I have a kit that has literally every retainer kit that a Toyota can use for around $20.

I have a 2006 RX330. I decided that I'm selling it today when I went to change a headlight bulb and there's no mention of it in the owner's manual. Then when I went to do the job and saw what a mess it was, that was the last straw. The RX330 sucks ass.

I can't really argue with you on this one but please note it isn't just Toyota that makes it this hard. It is absolutely ridiculous that they didn't think this through and assumed your bulb would last forever but what you gonna do.

@@ClintHolland The owner's manual lacking any mention of it is the crusher. I never liked the controls on the car. LOVE the way it rolls down the road but hate the controls for everything. "Push, push, push, push: beep, beep, beep, beep" to change anything. Super basic things likely encountered while driving should be covered in the owner's manual in my opinion.

They may be called day lights in other places. We generally refer to them as either low or high beam.

I tried to do this and i think everything is way too fragile/rusted/old, i have an 06 lexus and i ended up breaking that clip, and even the the 2nd one that's towards the bottom right partially cracked. lol idk how you managed to bend your bumper to unscrew that bolt. Mine was so hard to pull back. Oh well. I'm just gonna take it to the shop. Really hope they don't tell me that i have to replace the headlight assembly because of the cracks and broken clip T_T . Although I did learn how to atleast replace the daylights if i need to. So thanks for that atleast!
