Yes Everything has been smooth and i havent had the issue any more with it not having power to the ignition

By far the best video I’ve seen on installing a GM ignition switch from that era. I have a 1986 GMC S-15 and didn’t wanna tear it up before seeing how to make the swap correctly, so thanks. BTW, what year is your Montecarlo? I had a black 1986 working UC back in the day, but wasn’t an SS.

Now my ignition key cylinder will not return all the way to the OFF and ACCY position, it was new when I replaced the ignition switch, think a got a defective one with a manufacturer problem... Any thoughts ?? I usually do my own work on the the hobby cars, but not being able to drive it again is frustrating. If changing the key switch doesn't fix the problem of it returning to OFF position, then I'm just taking it to a good shop and paying them to fix it for good !! Thanks again for the best videio on ignition switches on alllllll of KZbin !!!!

@@johnb2512 Make sure the rod is all the way seated There is a button on the inside of the switch that the rod has to push against

Getting this switch out of the tight space Chevy jammed it into is one of the worst jobs I've done in 40 years of fixing cars. And putting the new one in wasn't much easier. Thanks for providing such well-lit close-up shots so its easy to see what's what and where as you go thorugh this horrow show.

What’s the other switch on the left side of the steering column? Mines just sitting in there, could a bad ignition switch be a parasitic drain on your battery ? My 79 monte starts right up but won’t turn of with the key I have to pull a plug on the distributor cap to turn it off,,, please help 🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️

Well if you had an 82-88 Monte Carlo then it would be the column mounted dimmer switch, But a 79 Monte should have the dimmer switch mounted on the floor, Still check where your dimmer switch is as your column might have been swapped with a 82-88 column. A bad ignition switch could cause a drain if the contacts of wiring is jacked up. Go to the starter with a 12 volt test light with the key in the OFF positing and see if the small terminal on the engine block side of the starter with the purple wire lights up. If it lights when the key switch is OFF then you have a drain there, it should NOT light up with the key switch in the OFF position. With car not shutting off when you turn key to OFF it sounds to me like the ignition switch is bad, or you have a wiring issue where the purple wire is staying hot for some reason.
