Recommend using a torque wrench to tighten bolts to spec

Unless you can actually make something right and you know the difference between right enough and "that's about to snap". Every other week, my crew sharpens the blades on all 5 Mowers used throughout the week. All commercial equipment too. So much more powerful than your regular ol mower. Never used a torque wrench and never had a problem. Across MANG years

I like this video. Short sweet and to the point, without all the excess….. This video gives me the confidence to change my own blades. Trying to save a buck or two 😊 Thanks for this.

Use some anti seize ! Keeps the bolts from rusting and seizing up. Copper is best. 😉 good video thank you sir.

I removed the smaller mulching blade. I found the two blade system to cake up the underneath preventing grass clippings from shooting into the bag. Did not matter if lawn was short, long or dry. I actually called Honda and they suggested spraying a grease underneath. This is what other customers have done having the same issue. Thought that was sill and went to the store/ Honda dealer with my issue. He said this is common. Handed me some washers to use as spacers and instructed me to remove the smaller blade. This did work better but my cheaper mower of 15 years bagged much better. I do seed for winter rye each year so maybe our grass blades are not as thick preventing them from being bagged. If you don’t bag and don’t mind grass clumps throughout the lawn then this is the system for you.

Sounds like a unique issue. I’ve been using Honda mowers with dual blades for years and have not seen the issue you are describing. Possibly a regional issue. Sorry to hear it does work well for you but for my applications this system has worked flawlessly. there are always other mowers on the market to chose from.

I discovered what was my issue. I removed the plastic piece shaped as a wedge underneath the deck. It has one bold and the cap is seen out on top of deck. It’s like a bumper for grad blades dropping the clippings back down prior to the opening into the bag.

Have same motor.. fired it up this weekend for the first time .. did the regular maintenance on it but noticed a weird noise coming from the underbody like if the blades were hitting something when I shut it off . I might replace them here soon hopefully it’s just that

I know it's been mentioned, but the block of wood method works nicely. But most importantly, as also mentioned - torque! You really *must* use a torque wrench and torque those bolts to the recommended specs per the manual, otherwise you risk serious injury.

Since this video, an investment in a torque wrench has been made!

It's a lot easier if you put a block of wood or pipe between the blade and the hole where the grass comes out. My blades are so old I decided to change them :-) TAKE NOTE how they look before taking the old ones off, which will make it easier to remember how to put the new ones on.

One step I like to take when working on a mower is to disconnect the sparkplug so that there is no chance of the engine inadvertently starting if you slip and spin the blades.

In addition to disconnecting spark plug, i always sharpen blades with a file. Factory sharpening is ok, but not great

Sharpening video coming soon. I like to use an angle grinder with a flap disk for my blades. Puts a good edge on real fast.

Well, your bolts came loose a lot more easily than mine. Mine seem to be fused on there!
@homeprojectswithnick

You could try applying some heat to the bolts, should help them loosen up in the future
@wcovey25

because his came off way too easily. The torque rating of these bolts is 36-43 ft-lbs. I use an impact to get mine off and a torque wrench to put them back on. I don't wanna mess around with bolts coming loose from under tightening on a plastic deck

Shouldn’t the spark plug be unplugged first? It could still start and run w/ the gas in the carburetor bowl. My understanding of the purpose of the fuel shutoff is to run the gas out of the carburetor for storage or perhaps service.

WHY are you using the open end instead of the Box end of the wrench on the bolts? The Box End is safer in use as it won't slip off the bolts nearly as easily as the open end. Do you know the recommended torque setting for the bolts? ( for those of us who would use a torque wrench)

I was looking at Lowe’s and they sell Honda mower blades, but I cannot figure out why they have three different versions for the HRX 217 and also the blades that are brand new seem like they’re not even sharp
