Can we replace the lead-acid battery in the Omni rechargeable light with a lithium-ion 18650 or lithium-polymer battery?
Although the existing lead-acid battery is charged to a similar voltage as lithium batteries, we cannot simply swap the battery and hope for the best.
We need to use a special charge board which is designed for charging lithium batteries. For example one which uses the TP4056 chip.

The TP4056 should work fine with the LiPo batttery, they charge to 4.2v. Default charge current is 1 amp, you can adjust that by adding a different resistor. The TP4056 chip is a bit heat sensitive, likely the hot glue did it in.

Okay cool, that's what I thought when I read through the spec sheet but I wasn't 100% sure because I couldn't find many people talking about charging lithium polymer batteries with the TP4056. I guess the heat sensitivity is why so many places use that cold caulk instead of hot glue.

I think it would work just fine if you just directly replace the lead acid with lithium 18650. if you are not sure just purchase NCR18650B with chip embed already on the negative bottom plate.

You should rip that battery management off the top of the battery and just let the one on the board do the job. Also I've noticed those boards have no reverse voltage protection it's easy to blow one if leads get reversed even for a second.

Usually the Protektion for the cell is missing, you can moverdraw or undervolt them.. This PCB is safer

Always interesting, what if you did a video on your all-time favorite gadget, mine would be my trusty Iphone4 from 2009, still in service, newer even changed the battery, i always tried charged from less than 10% all the way up to 100% think that`s the trick on those.

Oh nice! I struggle to keep my phones for that long because I always drop them. But this time I invested in a decent OtterBox case to protect the phone. I'm not sure what my favorite gadget would be. perhaps it would be the rechargeable USB fan because they're just so useful in a hot country. Otherwise it's whatever phone I'm currently using :P

can you use that old board instead of that tp4056 module?
@GadgetAddict
@GadgetAddict Жыл бұрын
I doubt it. Because it's designed for a lead acid battery. Maybe it would be okay if the lipo cell that you install has a protection board built in. Although personally I'd recommend replacing the board. Or even better, just don't buy this light in the first place. There's so many alternatives that you can buy online, that come with lithium batteries.

Where did you get the charge board? On another note where do you buy those electronics you have? Having a hard time finding retailers here in the Philippines
@GadgetAddict
@GadgetAddict 7 жыл бұрын
The charge board came from eBay. I bought 5 of them for $1 or $2. They were super cheap. Unfortunately I already used them in other projects. Whenever a product breaks, I save the battery for future projects. Which electronics are you asking about?

What is the charging system for those all old mobile phones (non-USB)? Does it require a charge controller or BMS?
@GadgetAddict

I think even the oldies are still lithium-ion based. They may have used barrel jacks but the internal charge boards are essentially the same as what you find in modern phones. Although of course they used to charge much slower :P

Where can you buy a charge board like that and an 18650 cell?
@GadgetAddict
@GadgetAddict 7 жыл бұрын
I bought them on eBay, 5 for $1 or $2. You can find them locally on OLX and Shopee but the prices are often ridiculously high. As for the 18650 cell, I removed it from an old powerbank but you can get them on Lazada, Shopee, OLX, CDRKING - pretty much everywhere. Of course there's a LOT of fake 18650s being sold, so don't believe the advertised capacity.

Well the soldering was easy anyway, it only took a few seconds. But yeah I guess some kind of epoxy would have been safer than a hot glue. I was just trying to use what I had laying around :)

Could have run wires from the original usb connector to the one on the new charge controller, then you don't have to dremel the case.
@GadgetAddict
@GadgetAddict 7 жыл бұрын
+Ian Haylock i thought about that but id also have to destroy the PCB traces going from that input to the existing charge circuitry otherwise it would conflict with the new charge PCB we installed.

I think you should put up a new video on why you are annoyed with lead-acid batteries over lithium.
@GadgetAddict
@GadgetAddict 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah I guess I could. I gave an explanation in my previous video. For anyone reading this comment and wondering what my concern is, let me explain. *Short Version:* Lead acid batteries charge slower and have a much shorter life than Lithium-ion or Lithium-Polymer batteries. *Long version:* Under perfect conditions, lead acid batteries can last a few years. The high ambient temperatures of the Philippines is already a negative towards the life of a lead-acid battery. The next issue is with how this light discharges the battery to such a low voltage; this greatly reduces the life of the battery. So we thought we're getting a fast charging, long life, lithium battery but what we actually got was a slow charging lead-acid battery that will probably be barely usable within a month if you use it every day. Aside from the difference between lead-acid and lithium batteries, these small generic 4V lead-acid batteries are notorious for being low quality.
