I must say, this is one of the most well thought out builds I've seen for a long time. Careful wire runs etc. Suggestions, if I may, I would also have another 2 series links (like another comment said) and I would like to see some thermal separation between the charge controller and the battery pack. Either the thin composite board for even Kapton tape in a pinch. Also, I know it was sped up and it's hard to tell, but when using the heat gun to shrink the plastic, take a break every now and then so as not to stress the cells out from overheating. Oh and whack some hot glue or kapton tape over the 12v terminal undersides for good measure. If something pops off under that lot, then there could be a colourful fireworks display. All just suggestions and not meant as a criticism.

I made one of these about 2 years ago using a commercial case kit inc BMS. No on/off switch but added a small push button switch and a battery level meter. I also made another including a cell monitor instead which shows voltage overall plus volts on each bank & alarms when individual banks drop below minimum volts. The level display and the alarm/monitor are available online for a low price and are a worthwhile addition.

I want to ask you something . Please tell me if you know about it. For many days I'm trying to find or build a hot cutter knife like tool which can cut the plastic so I can put switches , led lights or connectors in the plastic body. soldering iron only works for round holes and it gets messed up with melted plastic, small cutting disk doesn't work everywhere. I tried to modifying a soldering iron but it didn't work as expected. Currently I heat up a knife on the gas stove and cut the plastic with it , But it is so frustrating, I have to keep re heating it and I can do it in kitchen only, I end up giving up on many projects. Please tell me if you have solution to this issue. I'll be very thankful.

A very fine build, I was not aware that a pack of 18650 cells would fit so perfectly inside a 12V gel-cell case. Also was not aware that a PET bottle would shrink so nicely over an 18650 pack - a good idea if/when you don't have commercial Heat Shrink Tubing that large when you need it. I would like to give three minor suggestions: First, go easy on the heat around the cells when shrinking down the covering (as Lloyd's Shednanigans suggested below) to avoid overheating the pack. Second, use 1/4" tinned braid instead of flattened solid core wire to join the cells together. It's just as thin but will carry more current and give you a small degree of flexibility which could prevent a cracked solder joint from disabling or causing sparks inside the pack. And third, put in an inline fuse, such as an auto fuse, above the cells like you did the switch and USB connectors to protect the pack from over-current situations.

This is a wonderful project! If I built it, I would not trust the bottle as insulation material. I would add an extra layer. And also a separate layer between the external battery poles and the PCB. In case a wire is getting lose, it can lead to a serious shortcut and fire. A fuse would also be good to protect the device, at best an external fuse which can be reset in case it has tripped. Battery voltage of 12,2V is very low for lead acid batteries, most appliances need voltages between 12 and 13V. If I connect a battery charger for 18V batterys to a 12V lead acid battery, it stops charging the connected battery if voltage is lower than 12V. Also consider that there is a voltage drop inside battery and on the lines.

Nice. But I prefer 4S LiFePo4 for lead-acid alternative because of better voltage equality and compatibility with chargers and equipment and higher currents capability. Now building in case of originall motorcycle battery which is a 5mm thicker so I can install 4x 33140 15a-h LiFePo4 elements, and battery is still lighter than original lead-acid was (2kg vs 2.8kg)
@ncdave4life2 жыл бұрын
I completely agree, Sobakin76. Lead-acid batteries charge at 14v. With only three 3.6v lithium-ion cells in series, you get 14v / 3 = 4.67v charging voltage, which is way too high. The BMS will presumably lower that to something reasonable, but probably at the cost of a lot of waste heat while charging, and you'll get less than 11v out of the resulting battery pack. With four 3.2v LiFePo4 cells, instead, you get 12.6v, which is a perfect match for a lead-acid battery, and you get the longevity and safety of LiFePo4, too. Where do you get your 32700 or 33140 LiFePo4 cells, are you pleased with their quality, and what BMS do you use?

20:20 The bench PSU was shut off because the over charge protection (battery BMS) turned off the charge, the battery voltage was over 12.9V which is too much for a 3S Lithium Ion battery pack. Li-Ion cells should not be charged to anything higher than 4.2V per cell, which is 12.6V total. So you need to set your power supply to 12.6V and wait until it drops down to a very low charging current.
@ErCanEverything2 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right. I wanted to show you that the BMS automatically shuts off once it reaches a critical voltage for the batteries. I set the power supply above 13V to show you that the BMS works, but the current must be observed according to the numbers of batteries and the manufacturer's specifications.🙂

This battery is not available to a car or motorcycle. Because in those voltage is on 14.2volt level. Simply acid battery can be loaded by 16.2 voltage. Maybe we can take one liion battery more on one cell than a capacity. Then in the loading process we have 12.6 plus 4.2 and will be 16.8. And in the lowest lvl of voltage will be 3.3 x 4 equals 13.2volt. A little more than we need. 14.2 is the limit of loading in cars/motorcycle. And this is a little under we want. In the past I think about this kind of battery and this kind of problem. But if we want a good capacity of power bank we have a good one sample on the move. Good job.
@TheSpotify952 жыл бұрын
@@budzio135 Car or motorcycle batteries will usually be much larger than 7Ah. Car batteries in particular will be about 80Ah or more, so this small battery will not be able to replace a car battery. Not quite correct in regards to voltage balancing, as the voltage balancing only occurs during the charging cycle at lowered current. Hence the resistance of the wires in the BMS Monitoring path (Resistivity * cross-sectional area * length) is not a significant factor during the charge cycle Where the wire size does matter is in the discharge path - the cell to cell connections, the Cell Bank +ve & - ve to BMS B+ & B - , and the BMS P+ & P - to the External Case Terminals.

The metal panels look a similar size to the 6800-9800mah lithium flat packs, I'm sure you could get some directly matched sizes and boost that mah rating even more.

Good idea👍. But I think it needs another charger for 3.7V+3.7V+3.7V batteries. If the charging voltage reach 13.20V soon the lithium batteries get damaged.

One is called BMS and serves to balance the cells. and the other is a Quick Charge QC3.0 module with 2 USB outputs for charging a phone, etc.

you need 4S lifepo4 configuration to match VRLA working range. 3S li-on will not work in 12v application

In this video you can see how it works on UPS kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZeQZZhmptSCjK8

@@ErCanEverything It can't work properly. 12V application will try to charge battery to 13.8-14.4 volts. BMS will cut off overcharge, UPS will loose battery. If you wanna use it as USB power bank, that's another question :)
@itsL7L9 ай бұрын
Wow cool, I'm going to copy this almost exactly. Question. What would happen in I added a 9th battery on each row of 3? Would capacity just go up? or would the bms not function properly be used it would make voltage go up instead.
@bentheguru49862 жыл бұрын
Good time chewing video watch but here are some points. The pack is 3S and not 4S thus voltage output and charge voltages lower. Lead-Acid (LA) runs very different volatages and current flows on output and charge. Putting Lithium into a case designed and configured to plug in LA applications just doesn't work without changes to the system feeding to/from it. So many have gone down path of trying to run UPS's of these turds and find it sucks bad, especially with 3S. If you wanna build a power bank, put it in a different container/package.
@ErCanEverything2 жыл бұрын
Initially I also thought that the voltage would be low, but they are almost identical. the minimum voltage for LA batteries is around 10 ~ 10,5V, for 3S it is 9.6~9.9V, I even made a 3S 22Ah Li-ion UPS pack and so far I have no problems. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZeQZZhmptSCjK8

Hi there, I'm building a battery pack very similar to yours, and I was not sure what BMS or power shear board to use, and so I learned which one is going to work from your video build, very nice job..😎👍 PS. I also like how you used the plastic bottle as the insulation for the battery's cells, Nice 👍

It's much more useful if you go for LiFePO4 4s rather the Lipo 3s... The 3s won't match alternators and other 12v systems properly.
@kiryutinaleksey Жыл бұрын
Exactly. 4.3x3= only 12.9V. But usual chargers give 14+V. So it will be 4.7v per cell. It is well too much. May explode.

One suggestion: The USB modules have LED's on them, You could have drilled holes in the lid of the box above the LED's then refilled the holes with clear Epoxy, this will allow the lights to be seen as an indicator the the USB modules are turned on. I've done this many times and it works well.

I probably would have doubled up the copper strips to make sure they could handle the current going through them, but its not for a vehicle like i originally thought so i guess it doesnt matter.

The maximum discharge current of these batteries is 5A total 40A. I don't think I'll load it more than 40A because that will destroy the batteries

These has been my challenge with these lithium ion batteries. Full charge is 12.6v. Without using dedicated lithium ion battery charger, you will not get the full charge. Other charges will cut off at 12v or a little above that. So, how do you solve this challenge?
@bentheguru49862 жыл бұрын
No, think about it some more. Dangerous idea building Lithium into Lead-Acid cases.
@ErCanEverything2 жыл бұрын
It was an LA battery from a UPS whose charging voltage is 13.7V. I made a 3S 8P Li-ion battery that can be charged at a maximum of 12A, I don't believe the UPS charger will exceed 4A which will not affect this pack. And once the voltage reaches 12.7~ 12.8V, the BMS will automatically stop charging
@bentheguru49862 жыл бұрын
@@ErCanEverything and totally different voltage profile to what the UPS is expecting thus you won't get anywhere near a deep discharge or most of the actuall current Lithium can produce. Unless you have a lithium configured UPS, stick with a chemistry it is designed for. Besides, 3S is a cheap way out from using 4S.

1. Solder is not glue. Make a secure mechanical connection, then solder the wire. This is what the holes in the circuit board are for. You might be confident enough in your soldering skills to get away with it, but the viewers might not be. Solder will fatigue over time and vibration and the connection will break at the worst possible time. 2. Great idea and implementation using the old SLA casing, but, use your words... Explain why you are doing what we see in the video and where you are going with it.
@ErCanEverything2 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you liked the video. Maybe you're right about the solder but there wasn't enough space in the box and if I had soldered the wires in the holes there was a chance they would short circuit over time touching the cells. Otherwise I use it for lighting or to charge my phone when I go camping

Soldering lithium batteries will cause damage to the cell. Everyone knows that, unless you don't nothing about batteries.

Hello, as I have been able to observe, it was enough with a charging voltage of 12.65 maximum 12.7, when applying 13v that's why the battery shows a voltage lower than 12.6 since the bms protected it.... On the other hand what a good battery elaboration!!!

Step the game up, use yourself some cell spacers. At the very least put something between the cells. Only the worst packs on the market will ever have cells touching each other. I can personally attest to that.
