Replace Mitsubishi Key Fob Battery

We drive a 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport SE with the FAST Key key fob. Recently one of our key fobs started triggering the "Key Battery Low" warning in the center of the dashboard. Here's a quick attempt to show everybody how easy it was to replace. Someday I'll get a real cameraman (or woman), but for today, this is me and my cell phone! Hope it helps you. This also works for key fobs on Mitsubishi Lancer Evolutions.....you just have to do everything way faster. ;)

Trying to put the battery in there is living hell if you don't have another fob to reference to. I have replaced these before with no effort, but that was because I could look at another fob that had the battery in it. I had lost my main fob, and had to put a battery in the backup fob. I leave batteries out of it because I don't want battery leak in those expensive fobs for something I, in this case, have had to use only once since I bought the car in 2012. I tried all sorts of ways of putting it in, and just never could find that way, until I found my original main fob, and then it was super easy. For some reason I never tried the angle of entry it required, not even once. BTW, maybe I don't understand the procedure, but since I have backup actual keys of both fobs, I thought I could just use that key until you get another battery (I had two extra). The problem is it seems the actual key backup, while it will unlock everything, it will not allow you to start the car that way, even though there's a damn ignition keyhole that you actually can stick the key in and turn over - almost. It simply will not let you start the engine at all and tells you to take the KEY OUT. The only thing I can figure that may work is if you're supposed to take the key out after you attempt it, then put the turn device back on and try to start it then, but that seemed so unlikely I didn't even bother. I just can't recall some 7 1/2 years back if the salesman told me that the key was specifically designed NOT to start the car or not. Of course, I presume that the entire relationship with the remote could be bypassed, but being without a mitsu expert around I just decided to try other means, like finding the lost main fob, which I did.

If you have more than one fob does it say that for either of them? Ruling out a possible different issue with one fob.

@Ed Monson yes it does. I have 2 fobs the other one was bought a year ago and hasnt been touched since then. The fob that i use daily had a battery low and i put it away and used the unused one but it still says low battery. I even drove 50km away from the first fob just to get it waaay out of range but nothing changed. Otherwise the fob is working normally and can lock/unlock doors a good distance away while the first one not as far.

@@Jay-ih5se well in my experience once the first battery is replaced they never last as long or work from as far away. Don’t know why. If I find an answer for low fob battery I’ll post it here. Got out of the car biz 3 years ago

I went to Walmart to get my car key battery replaced. At the Auto Repair department the guy at the counter told me it costs $84 for the battery and it is on sale. i drive an AWD 2014 Mitsu Outlander Sport SE. But your video showed me it is so easy to replace. Is it because it is an AWD?

HI Thanks for the view and the question. My key fob, in the video - is the most advanced key fob you could buy in 2014. There is nothing special about an AWD car as it relates to the fob. It should be the same as mine - especially if it looks like mine. Good luck.

That is a crazy price. My 2010 Outlander is AWD and the key fob uses a 3V CR2032. The back of the FOB has it in small writing. FYI These batteries cost only $5 for two here in Australia. Cant imagine in the US they would be $84 I suspect you would just be paying for the "service".

InAUGral A can of coke in Coles is about .80 cts, from a vending machine is about $3.50. In Hilton Hotel will cost you not less than $10.00. Such is life nothing crazy about it.

Im guessing he must have misunderstood and was trying to sell you a car battery. Not a battery for your car fob. The battery for the car fob shouldn't be more than $10
