How to replace the solenoid in your gas or electric golf cart. When the solenoid fails, you will typically find that the golf cart won't start when you press the pedal or it may not stop when you release the pedal.

I turned from run to the tow/maintenance switch when I moved my cart around in my garage so the electric hill brake wouldn’t engage. When I turned it back to run and with key switch on, I have a dead cart. It worked fine prior to this. Your help is appreciated.
@ClintHolland10 ай бұрын
Well, assuming your batteries are charged and in good shape the logical place to start would be to check your run/tow switch and make sure it is working.

We had it home from the shop less than a month and it stopped working suddenly. Any feedback would be so much appreciated!! Thank you again!!
@ClintHolland Жыл бұрын
@@lhorne6186 I would suspect one of three things. A wiring issue, or something wrong with the new speed controller or the motor. Unlikely to be the motor but since you just had these replaced I would definitely check the wiring first. You could also work backwards and using a multimeter determine if power is even getting to the motor. If it isn't, then see if power is getting to the speed controller. Just keep working backwards from the motor if you have no idea where to start. If it were me, I would verify the wiring from the solenoid to the speed controller isn't damaged and then from there to the motor.

Unlikely to be the solenoid. My initial response is this sounds exactly like a problem with the batteries. Have you had them tested for their output? A simple voltage test isn't sufficient as you will need something that puts them under load. If not that it could be the speed controller or even the motor.

@ClintHolland9 ай бұрын
That is almost certainly a diode and not just a piece of wire.
@billowens14399 ай бұрын
It’s on the original so I’ll put it on the new one. I just wondered what the purpose of it was. There is definitely something under the insulation as it’s a little thicker. Thank you for the response 😁
@ClintHolland9 ай бұрын
@@billowens1439 I would as well. In simple terms a diode is like a one way valve for electrical current. Having one allows current to flow from the solenoid to your motor but not back from the motor to the solenoid. This can happen when the solenoid is switched off say by releasing your accelerator pedal and the current headed to the motor tries to flow back into the solenoid. The diode prevents that.

@@Scorpio69birthright See if this helps for your cart. This is for Club Cars in general and not just your model. Series Controller test Connect your voltmeter between the main negative terminal on the battery pack an the M- terminal on the controller. Push pedal just far enough for the solenoid to click. You should read Full battery pack voltage. If you don't have it, troubleshoot the red and blue cables and their connection and the contacts and components associated with them. If you do have full battery pack voltage, slowly push the pedal to the floor. The voltage should smoothly decrease to Zero, or close to Zero. If it doesn't, check the throttle input to the controller. If it does, and the motor isn't turning, you should see smoke or something ought to be getting mighty hot. If the voltage was measured between the controller's M- and B+ terminals, then you are measuring across the motor and the voltage would be Zero with pedal up and full battery pack voltage with pedal down.

Last time using my electric golf cart, it quit moving. After dragging it back to the house. I tried to determine why it quit moving. With the key on and rocker switch in forward or reverse, when I press the pedal the cart moves about 1/2 and stops. This happens in forward or reverse. What do you think? Thanks
@ClintHolland Жыл бұрын
Sorry about the huge delay. Do you hear the solenoid click when you do this? You have checked the batteries correct? That is almost always the first suspect.
@TopTierCarts2 жыл бұрын
Would a bad solenoid cause the electronics to not turn on? My golf cart runs normally, but the touch screen, horn, headlights do not turn on
@ClintHolland Жыл бұрын
Nope. The solenoid only controls power to the motor. You may have a blown fuse or broken wire running to the accessories.

I have a 2017 ezgo Rxv and solenoid is juste like the one in the video. Does that brass looking piece that goes into the controller need to be used or can the wire be plugged into the solenoid directly? I think you called That just a brace? Also I tried installing a HD solenoid into my cart and wired it up and when I reconnected battery I had do power to it. The cart had power when I turned the key on but had no forward or reverse. I also reversed all the wires and still nothing. It seems to not be getting power. I was told I didn’t need a diode or resistor, could that be the problem? Or maybe I bought a bas solenoid. I put old one back on and it worked fine so I’m at a loss.
@ClintHolland2 жыл бұрын
Yep, that brass piece is just a brace. And it definitely sounds like you have a bad solenoid.

We have a late 90’s DS. It will start and go but loses speed and then will kind of click or shudder and then pick up speed again. Solenoid? Speed control sensor on one that old?
@ClintHolland3 жыл бұрын
Doubtful that it is the solenoid. Can you tell where the clicking is coming from? It could be the speed control. Have you verified your batteries are in good shape?

@ClintHolland Жыл бұрын
The solenoid is pretty standard but you do need to keep those diodes installed. Assuming they are not bad you can reuse them. Just make sure you don't wire them up backwards.

hi there, this might not be the place but im lost! my club car ds series cart has gone wide open throttle. When i barely even tap the pedal it spins the wheels at 100%. I have swapped 2 different MCORS, no difference with either, it also does not slow down as the pedal gets further depressed. What on earth sould it be? soleniod? controller?

Sorry about the late response. Did you get this figured out? Probably not the solenoid. Could be a faulty speed controller.

I have a 98 club car ds, 48v. I replaced the F&R switch. Sometimes it works fine. Sometimes I turn the key on and I do not get anything in foward or reverse. Solenoid doesn't click and when I press the pedal it acts like it wants to move but doesn't. Key switch is good and in the foward position I jumped the microswitch that actuates when the F/R switch Is in the foward position but still no go. What else can I check or what else you think it is?
@ClintHolland Жыл бұрын
Have you checked the solenoid? You mention it isn't clicking. Could be something leading to the solenoid but you can check power if you have a multimeter.

You said if the cart is in no start condition, the solenoid is usually the issue for both gas and electric. Does this this include all makes and models? I have a 1994 Clubcar DS gas. It’s a pretty common cart.
@ClintHolland3 жыл бұрын
It sure does. Pretty much all golf carts use solenoids and this is one of the most common faults in electric ones. Now for gas golf carts it can be solenoid or sometimes the starter if you aren't hearing the motor try to crank. Can be a bunch of other stuff too but the solenoid is a super common item to go bad.

I have a 1992 club cart 48v I know I must have a wire backwards, but I put the golf cart back together and for some reason when I push the gas it is at full throttle as you push The throttle down it gets slower and when it is pushed all the way down it almost gets no speed at all like it’s working backwards.. Do you have any tips

Sounds like the connection from the pedal to the speed controller is reversed.

I have a 2013 rxv. I’m upgrading the controller and I got a heavy duty solenoid. I can’t find any videos on a heavy duty upgrade. Was I suppose to purchase a diode? I don’t see one on my current solenoid
@ClintHolland3 жыл бұрын
It really depends. Some require a diode, sometimes even 2 and some require a diode and resistor. It is usually determined by your controller and not the solenoid per se. What type of controller did you get?
@coppertopv365 Жыл бұрын
Took the old solenoid and it was Plain, new one says + & - 🤔 now im confused.. i think the orange is positive in some cases so i think + is "Up" and the - is "Down" and that would be blue wire. But im unsure or if it matters
@ClintHolland Жыл бұрын
Hopefully you got this wired back up. For most solenoids, the polarity doesn't matter.

When I press the throttle shouldn’t I hear the solenoid click? I have reverse alarm, I can hear gas pedal switch click. The resistor on the solenoid gets warm but solenoid doesn’t click. Is that a symptom of a bad solenoid?
@ClintHolland3 жыл бұрын
It sure is. That's the number one symptom of a bad solenoid. Before replacing it however, test it first.

EZGO doesn't move or have back up alarm. Run / tow beeps but when I plug in the charger it stops. Tried to bypass the charger switch wire but no difference.
@ClintHolland3 жыл бұрын
If that is the case, it is probably not the solenoid. The backup alarm should come on immediately upon switching to reverse even before you press the pedal and engage the solenoid. Did this just start happening all of a sudden?

I have a 2009 RXV 48 volt that the brakes are locked. Will roll in tow mode. Clicks when turning switch on but will barely move with scrubbing sound from brake. Please, Advise. Update. I removed the electric brake from the motor so even in Run it will roll but as soon as you touch the throttle the motor locks up and makes a scrubbing sound and barely moves. Now what?
@ClintHolland3 жыл бұрын
This could be so many things but let me mention the most common. First of all, check the batteries and connections. Then check the solenoid. While I don't have a video, check youtube as many others do. Generally if you are hearing a click the solenoid is good though. Low battery voltage or a loose cable can cause this. You may need to take it to someone with a scanner. The 2009 EZGO was known for having brake problems just like you described.

Our golf cart runs great until you have to go up a small hill.... it does not want to go up slight inclines, is that a solenoid issue?

Hi. I have a 1996 club car (gas). It will crank and run but after about 10 minutes, when I stop, it won't crank again until I wait a few minutes. I replaced the battery and it's still doing it and the battery is dying fast so I'm have to jump it off to crank. Would this be a sign of bad solenoid? Thanks so much.
@becca08262 жыл бұрын
Also, it doesn't click when I press the gas.

@@becca0826 When you say it doesn't crank, does it try to start and just not? Like can you hear the starter trying to start the cart?

It doesn't do anything or make any noise until I wait about 10 minutes. Then it will crank right up and run until I let the motor cut off. Then I have to wait again
@ClintHolland2 жыл бұрын
My best guess from your explanation is a bad starter that is getting hot and needs to cool down before it can run again. It could also be a bad battery that is getting hot but unlikely.

I replaced my solenoid on my Yamaha cart and now when I plug in the charger the charger immediately turns off and does not charge the cart. Each battery shows at least 7amps. Any tips? The cart does go forward or backwards but the lights and reverse time still works.
@ClintHolland3 жыл бұрын
Not being able to charge your GC is almost certainly not related to the solenoid unless you have other issues. The solenoid doesn't come into play unless your ignition is on which it shouldn't be if you are charging it. What was the reason for replacing for your solenoid?

I rewired the lights and dash on my 2004 club car ds. When I went to drive my golf cart the golf cart won’t go and I get an intermittent buzzing noise. When I hit the gas it doesn’t click or anything. Could it be my solenoid or something else? Thanks in advance!
@ClintHolland2 жыл бұрын
It could be the solenoid especially if you aren't hearing a clicking sound. However, if it just started when you rewired it I would suspect a wire isn't connected correctly.

Couple of questions. Does it do the same thing in both forward and reverse or just one direction. When it stops, do you feel like it's trying to move but the brakes are holding it or does it feel like the motor isn't doing anything?

Would this be the same for a bad boy buggy? I just bought one to try and flip. The lights turn on. When you turn the cart on it clicks twice, would this be a symptom of needing to replace a solenoid? And remind me exactly what to do so I don’t blow myself up! When you mentioned that I was like “oh Lawd no I ain’t doing this now” haha!
@larrym31862 жыл бұрын
I am assuming you are working on an electric bad boy. When EZ-GO bought out bad boy years ago, there was a batch of solenoids that were used in bad boy buggies that would click twice and nothing would happen but I have not seen that in years. Most times, it was the solenoid but it would be best to test the solenoid first. it could also be a bad connection somewhere, usually on the batteries or it could be a broken wire getting a partial connection.. Lights work off 12v and the car runs on 36v or 48v depending on the car, so the lights working don't tell you anything valuable. I am not one to throw parts at golf cars. When working on a golf car, unhook the wires on the positive terminal. You could use a zip tie to hold all the wires in a group so when you reconnect, you can be sure you did not forget a wire.. Sometimes, wires fall to the side and are not easily seen. Make sure you move the wires away from the battery terminal so they don't accidentally touch when you are working on the golf car.
