Replace Toilet Bolts and Toilet Gasket

I show how to replace toilet bolts and a toilet gasket. I like to lock the toilet bolts onto the toilet flange with an extra nut and washer. Check the height of the toilet flange to the flooring to decide the type of toilet gasket to use.

This guy is great. I was actually looking for how to replace the gasket inside the toilet where the water drains, where? into the toilet? I don't know. It's not like I want to repair toilets, I'm a woman and when I was little I never said when I grow up I want to have to repair my toilets, but money is tight, so anyway, back to what I was saying, I decided I should watch this just in case and he makes this look easy. Usually when I'm doing projects I don't want to do, 10 things go wrong before I'm done. Did he edit those parts out, or did it really go this smoothly?

Great video thanks. Maybe one suggestion is to caution viewers to plug up the drain with a big rag cuz it's a real drag if you drop one of your only two bolts, nuts, or washers in the open drain. Oh, and, of course, some would need to told to remove the rag before placing the toilet😅

It’s always more fun doing home repairs while wearing your socks. This just happened to me. Loose toilet and my Home Depot toilet had plastic Johnny bolts. Damn it Johnny! A good tip is to use brass Johnny bolts. I’ll remember to thank my plumber who installed while mumbling during the reinstallment.

How do you replace the toilet flange? It rusted out where the bolts slide in and lock in place. I bought a new PVC type and metal one but don't know how to remove the rusty metal one installed in a tile floor. The tile is cut around and morter is placed around it too. I'm tired of a rocking toilet!

It could be a number of issues including the bolts not being long enough so a bad plumber might not have put nuts on them at all making it not secure. You best bet is to take the toilet off & see exactly where the problem is whether it be the bolts themselves, a broken flange, or the flange being below the floor so an extender & 3.5" bolts is needed. Once you figure out the problem, order the parts. You shouldn't have to replace the gasket, but I would just do it anyway if it's never been changed since these parts are cheap.

This may be a stupid question (first time home buyer disclaimer), but my wife and I have a Kohler toilet and the bolt on one side rusted off. Does it matter what type of bolt we use to replace it? Also does it matter (if we decide to do it) what type of seal we use?

Hi, you can get toilet bolts at a hardware store or home center. You have two sizes 1/4 inch and 5/16. You will also have a standard length of 2 1/4 inches long. Longer bolts will usually have an area where you can snap off the end section to make it shorter if needed. I like a non wax seal from Fluidmaster or Korky. Hi, it depends on whether the bolt slipped out of the flange or the flange broke. If you cracked the flange, there are repair rings that work well and are easy to install.

I have to do this same replacement at home right now and my problem is... I know that supply line valve is going to start leaking the moment I twist the knob. Hasn’t been turned in years. Likewise, the other valves down the line, all the way up to and including the main, haven’t been turned in years either. I am predicting a major headache.
