Big question, when removing the harmonic balancer I see it spin back which is the same with every video I find. However everyone also says not to turn the engine counter clockwise. How can I remove the harmonic balancer bolt without an impact and should I use something to hold the balancer in place while I break the bolt loose?
@DIYwithMichaelBorders
@DIYwithMichaelBorders 5 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching, any update? Impact is best recommended. It’s very difficult to loosen and remove bolt without turning engine backwards, with a standard breaker bar or ratchet. Please keep us posted.
@euforik21

@@DIYwithMichaelBorders haven’t worked on it yet, been too stressed out about ruining the engine lol. I’ve done car work before but almost exclusively with simple old muscle cars. So the impact helps it free up without spinning because it’s just faster at removing the bolt before the balancer spins?

Thank you for the video! One question, when it’s time to remove the 19mm bolt from the harmonic balancer one would think that it could possibly turn the crank counter clockwise especially using an impact gun. Or am I confused about it. Seems that that bolt can be pretty hard to remove sometimes. Or does the crank shaft not move unless someone actually turns the shaft alone?
@DIYwithMichaelBorders
@DIYwithMichaelBorders 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching, great question. That’s the main goal and purpose of the impact…to rapidly jolt 19mm bolt loose with VERY LITTLE counterclockwise movement. Using a standard ratchet and socket or breaker bar will 100% lead to a dangerous amount of counterclockwise movement. There is a TINY bit of play when jolting it free with impact however if it’s not jolting free within the first 3-5 seconds of engaging impact…stop and apply heat to bolt only. Please keep us posted. 😎👍

@davpart7723 If I can't loosen the 19mm bolt without the crankshaft turning, it's probably because there's rust between harmonic balancer and crankshaft, so I spray some WD40 or any penetrating oil and let it sit for 15 minutes and try again. If it still doesn't want to come off it's because they way overtightened it last time is was installed. I don't heat the bolt. I pull fuses for ignition and fuel pump. I then start the car until it dies out and turn the key another couple of times too make sure the engine worn't start. Then I put a 19mm socket on breaker bar, put the socket on the 19mm bolt and the breaker bar against the floor or something else that will lock it in place. Then I tap the ignition key to engage the starter and the bolt loosens. I only tap the key as much as necessary to loosen bolt,
@LuwiigiMaster
@LuwiigiMaster 9 ай бұрын
Question, you mention not to turn the harmonic balancer counter clockwise, but you need to loosen the bolt by turning in that direction. I am guessing using an impact driver is a necessity as opposed to a breaker bar, because the breaker bar has the potential to turn the engine backwards?
@DIYwithMichaelBorders
@DIYwithMichaelBorders 9 ай бұрын
Good morning, just poured a cup of coffee and am sitting down to answer any and all questions for the DIY community. You are spot on. Using an impact gun to loosen bolt in a quick jolting manner will alleviate counterrotation of the engine. There is a tiny bit of play that the engineers put into that however using a standard ratchet or pry bar will definitely exceed the engineered tolerance of backwards rotation. 👍 Let us know if you have any questions and hey if you’re into crypto trading, join our DIY ecosystem and become part of an exclusive group of DIYers. toolboxtoken.com Reach out to us any time! 🧰

You need to line up the hole in the camshaft pulley with the oval groove (notch) on the camshaft bearing cap. He does a very good job of showing and explaining how to do it. The only info I can add is to put white out on the notch that's on camshaft bearing cap so it's more visible and use a flashlight and small mirror to verify they're lined up.
