The washers go on the inside (if necessary)! They are for padding the wheel thickness to match the caster clearance. You don't need washers between the screws heads and the caster fork. If the fork has 21 mm clearance, but the wheel is 18 mm wide, and you tighten the axle, you're bending the fork, which is bad. The correct washers let you tighten the axle nut firmly without bending the fork. These kinds inline-skate-type wheels have the beautiful attribute that they tighten firmly into the fork: they do not require free play, unlike the riveted garbage they are replacing. You want to get the axle tight, without undue stress on the fork.

Thank you for this video. My relatively new American Tourister Luggage shamefully decided to shed all the rubber parts of its wheels. They just crumbled when I pulled them out of storage to use them during the easing off the pandemic lockdowns. I have inspected the inside of the suitcase and there is no way I can replace the whole assembly just like I did for my gaming chair's wheels that are just plug and replace. Now I'm off getting these replacement wheels and sawing off the crap ones. Again thank you for this video.

I just did exactly this. I got four wheels of Amazon for $15 CAD. Replaced all four on a suitcase (two had broken tires). Do not even think about buying replacement wheel caster assemblies, if the casters are not damaged!!! Tires only.

i was about to throw my suite case. this video saved me... the rubber material degrades in time. why dont they make thee whole wheel with a single hard material ? is it available with a single hard plastic or polycarbonate ?

Most manufacturer add a layer of soft rubber to their castor wheels. I suspect this is a standard way to reduce noice from hard plastic wheels.

Cutting the old wheels off was a lot harder than anticipated, ended up using a dremel and hacksaw combo (7+ mins per wheel). Also keep in mind that changing the wheel to these better bearing wheels does not alleviate any issue you may have with the swiveling and turning of the wheels.

The original axle is actually a long rivet. The concave (cup) end of the axle is only thin metal. Find a sharp drill bit that is just over the diameter of the axle, and drill into the cup. It will cut through the rivet very quickly. Then you can drive the axle out with a punch. Should only take a minute or so per axle.

Replacing it myself took longer than expected for couple of reasons Firstly I had a bad saw, so I had to use some else’s better hacksaw but it still took a long time. Second problem arose when I got the wheels and tried to install them inside the wheel frame They would get stuck on something and not be able to spin freely. I had to just file down a little thing sticking out, and also sides Third problem arose when I realized the wheel holder thingy, was bent somehow from the stress. So all in all it took me well 2 hours. Or maybe a bit less, but I think it was worth it.

How do you know the wheel size of your luggage and what skate wheel size to purchase? I have Travelpro underseaters' need skate wheels.

You need to measure the current wheels on your suitcase, diameter and thickness as well as how long the bolt is. It's a bit hard to get the exact measurement but you can get pretty close - just measure and check multiple times! Just as long as the new wheel isn't thicker or much bigger in diameter than current wheels (cos you have to make sure it will still fit inside the wheel well)

I had a samsonite luggage I have had more than a decade, still in very good condition but the wheels have crapped out twice already. Same thing with samsonite backpack i bought more recently, the rubber on the zipper handle disintegrated which has nothing to do with wear because the bag was unused. Also had a antler i bought in 2016, used only once and now the wheels have disintegrated. I an wondering what exact material they are using for the rubber. This is really shady behaviour from the manufacturers. I have an old delsey, heavy as shit and rolled all over the world but the wheels are completely intact. Its definitely in the type of rubber they are using, and not wear and tear.
