I had questions before i jumped in, you and Summit tech help took care of them. The Summit spring kit doesn't have the O rings, only the blue umbrellas. They also don't say to reuse the covers on the top of the springs. Google image search shows stock- yes, aftermarket- no. Thanks again!

When researching valve stem seals on amazon/ ebay, many listings don't differentiate intake and exhaust. They all look the same and are in a set of 16. Viton blue, like yours.
@JH-tk6ge
@JH-tk6ge 4 жыл бұрын
Nevermind, found this on a jalopy journal forum: "Later GM factory seals are positive viton type seal on the intake and hard plastic on the exhaust. The plastic handles heat better. 11/32" stem uses white umbrella. 3/8" stem uses black . No O-rings since early nineties. Vortec heads use a steel jacket positive seals. Intake and exhaust. Color coded because of different materials."

@@JH-tk6ge my exhaust has the white plastic caps and my intakes have the blue with springs around them but they are 1970 chevelle heads ''441''s that have been reworked for 2.02 and 1.6 so im not sure what to order because they have bronze guides and looks like the valve towers were cut for those specific blue seals?

Great video! I have never done this type of head and came here to figure out where the o ring went. I am going to do this job with the heads still on the vehicle by pressurizing each cylinder one at a time. my quotation is why couldn't you install the oring on the valve before you add the spring and retainer? this way it would be much easier to see the oring especially with the head still on the engine. Is there some clearance issue that won't allow that? thanks. And again great video!
@josaljo1
@josaljo1 7 жыл бұрын
The retainer on the top of the valve springs is where the oil is sealed. If you put the o ring on first you might push it out of position when the retainer is put on.

does the exhaust valve plastic seal ride up and down with the valve because it doesnt seem to seat like the intake valve seal does.
@josaljo1
@josaljo1 2 жыл бұрын
I like to put oil on everything as I put it back together but the plastic seal may need the guide dry when you first put it on but they should not ride up and down. Heat from the engine after they run a bit should stop that.
@randy1ization
@randy1ization 2 жыл бұрын
@@josaljo1 does the small inner spring hold the exhaust seal down, I am perplexed as to why the seals are different. is the thought is the intake seal is working great oil should not get into the cylinder from the head valley so no need for a just as good exhaust valve, seal ? I know on some 4 cycle motor bike engines they dont even use exhaust valve seals, just intake. I saw on the LS engines the seals look identical except for color, so I imagine the exhaust seal is more heat tolerant.

@oldsilkhat7893
@oldsilkhat7893 5 жыл бұрын
You can also use rope. Take out the plug make sure the piston is about 1/2 way up on the compression stroke. Put about a foot length of rope down the plug hole and turn the engine by hand just until you get a little resistance. Keep in mind you need a different style compressor tool. They make one that screws down to compress and also one that has a leverage bar. I prefer the rope method over air because if you have poor sealing valves (realistically you should be doing more than seals) but it's possible to drop a valve, which if you have the piston at top dead center isn't bad but it can be a little bit of a pain getting it back up enough to get the keepers back in.
