Replace Water Heater T&P Valve (Step-by-Step!)

The T&P Valve on your water heater is called lots of things (TPR valve, Temperature and Pressure Relief Valve, etc.). But no matter what you call it, make sure it’s working correctly.
If not, you need to replace it immediately. Don’t wait. The T&P Valve is the device that keeps your water heater from turning into a bomb if temperature or pressure gets too high. It’s a must that it be tested every year (see link below) and replaced if necessary.

Was that PVC that you used for the drip pipe?

Great question, Tony. Glad you mentioned it. It's actually PEX, installed before I bought the home. As you might know, you should never use PVC for a drip line. It only withstands about 140 degrees of temperature, which is often the temperature of the water in a water heater.

Ok. Lowered the water temp to 135 degrees, the incoming water pressure to 55 lbs/in. Installed new PRV and it still drips. ????? Any ideas

I have a square nuts cap on my new Rheem water heater I don’t know what tools to buy to remove the cap and put the T&P valve on on the top of the water heater Can somebody help me please.

Thanks for asking! There are socket heads out there for loosening square nuts, as well as box wrenches that can be used. If you have any of these, we would recommend trying these. Let us know if you have any more questions!

@@1-Tom-Plumber Thanks for answering me for anybody who is having problems removing the 3/4 square cap of your on you water heater T&P I found the solution to the problem I went to Home Depot I purchase a Husky 24 inch Ratcheting breaker bar with 1/2 inch head drive for $45 with taxes. That’s what works for me.
