So the "professional" plumber that installed my water heater just went on a tirade and called me every name in the book just for asking if this is something covered under warranty. @williamhartsell63905 ай бұрын
@rickarchambault4756 it's a double edge sword. If you flush it you could have a leak that sediment was blocking. Or cause one due to negative pressure. But yes it. Is a mechanical piece of equipment. The best maintenance advice I can give is clean out around the burner. Ie any dirt/hair. There's a reason most companies only warranty for a couple years.

I HAVE WATCHED A FEW OF YOUR VIDEOS. I DECIDED TO SAVE YOUR INFO SO I CAN WATCH MORE. YOU DISPELLED A FEW MYTHS AND WE ALL APPRECIATE THAT. I HATE COMMENTING BUT IN THIS CASE I HAD NO CHOICE. YOUR INFO IS VALUABLE AND OF COURSE VERY HELPFUL. I CAUGHT YOUR VIDEO ON REPLACING THE BALL VALVE AFTER HAVING TROUBLE DRAINING MY TANK. SURE ENOUGH AFTER INSTALLING THE BALL VALVE & DRAINING THE TANK A FEW TIMES I TESTED THE TEMPERATURE PRESSURE VALVE...IT LEAKED. I NEVER WOULD HAVE CHECKED THIS (WITH OUT SEEING YOUR VIDEOS) BUT BY DOING SO I NOTICED THERE IS A STICKER NEXT TO THE VALVE THAT STATES TO DO JUST WHAT YOU SAID, TEST AT LEAST ANNUALLY. I JIGGLED & FORCED IT CLOSED (SEVERAL TIMES) TO BUY ME TIME TILL THE NEXT MORNING. WENT AND GOT ONE AND AM INSTALLING TODAY. I ALWAYS USE IT TO DRAIN THE TANK BUT WHEN IT WAS FULL OF H20 AND I ACTUALLY TESTED IT AFTER REFILLING THE TANK, THAT IS WHEN IT FAILED. JUST OPENING IT DOES NOT TEST IT. I LEARNED QUITE A BIT OF INFO BY READING THE COMMENTS WITH YOUR RESPONSES AS WELL. THANK YOU FOR YOUR EFFORTS I APPRECIATE YOUR INFORMATION THAT BOLSTERS OUR EXISTING KNOWLEDGE AND INFORMS US SO WE CAN DO THE JOB CORRECTLY AND NOT ONLY FIX PROBLEMS BUT SEEK TO IDENTIFY PENDING PROBLEMS. FOR EXAMPLE THE T&P VALVE IN MY CASE WAS SPEWING H20. ALSO THE TAPE AND PLUMBERS DOPE IN CONJUNCTION WAS NEWS TO ME ALBEIT THE CORRECT WAY. ASK MOST PEOPLE AND THE WILL NOT KNOW YOU NEED TO WRAP THE TAPE AGAINST THE THREADS. THE LIST GOES ON.

Replaced mine 7-30-2021. It had a constant leak, even after opening it several times. The replacement was CASH ACME NCLX-5 SER 7 ONLY❗️ The rod was coated with what looked like sand. This TMP valve has only been replaced once over several years. Removing valve was easy. Draining water heater, took awhile.... it flowed really slow ( and I need to upgrade that valve too , like you did 👍🏻). Installed TMP valve and there are ZERO leaks. I kept my old TMP valve for future. Now I too have an expansion tank and when it was installed, all lines were soldered in. But I new nothing about testing it. And I don’t have that fancy pressure gauge, but do have old type air gauge which will give me some reading. Maybe I can get water pressure from district utility. Thank you for your many help videos. 7-31-2021 Today 8-1-2021 , Again I replaced the TMP valve and flushed the water heater. Didn’t think about the expansion tank until I watched another video you did, and my exp. tank had two thuds and no ping⚠️ Got a new Exp. tank, water pressure gauge, and pipe dope/ Teflon tape. My water pressure tested at 80 psi. The new Exp. tank is set at 40 psi. And I’m using a portable air pump that I have in my vehicle for tires. And just watching this video once again to get proper instructions to replace and install new Exp. Tank. Well it’s installed and I’ll check it though out the next few days and a couple weeks. My tank is only 2 Gal. and hangs having AIR PRESSURE Valve at bottom. The previous Exp. Tank was installed the same way, having no extra supports. 👍🏻💓❗️🇺🇸 Stay Safe.

Great video. I wish I had watched this before I replaced the Pressure Release Valve. The one I bought at the Home Improvement store wasn’t EXACTLY the same specification, so I am afraid that is why it still leaks about 1/2 - 1/3 gallon of water a day. Now, I have purchased the exact same valve as the original (thank goodness I kept the photo of it), the same manufacturer, the same model, the same specifications (thank you Amazon). Hopefully, that will solve the problem. Oh, I haven’t drained and flushed it since I bought the house 3 years ago, so just in case it is sediment blocking the valve I am going to drain and flush the tank at the same time … after watching your video “Draining and Flushing a hot water tank”. 😊

Just a word of advice, if it's leaking and it's a few years old, don't test it, just get a new one. When I tested mine, it wouldn't shut off. I ended up having to scramble to place a bucket, shut off the power to the water heater, and shut off the cold water (which required a step stool to get to). I'm guessing that the cold-water shutoff was placed high in case a larger tank was installed. Luckily, I had a step ladder nearby. That being said, this video was well worth watching. The old one was full of sediment and would have caused a lot more of a mess if it opened up when I wasn't there. Picked up a replacement pressure relief valve from Lowes and installed it. At least that's one less thing that I need to worry about for a while. Now I just need to flush it and install a new anode rod.

@@AmplifyDIY Are you talking about replacing the T&P Valve or the whole tank which is about 8yrs old, thanks for the advice.
@AmplifyDIY2 жыл бұрын
@@Dnyce07 Apologies for the confusion: If you have a steady stream of water coming out of the drain pipe attached to your T&P valve, you need a new T&P valve. The heater itself is likely just fine. It sounds like your T&P valve is no longer seating correctly, and is therefore not closing all the way, so water is leaking out of the tank through the valve. Replace the valve only, and see if that solves the issue. Good luck!

Thanks for the great video. I had a drip from my drain line and followed the steps outlined in your video and successfully changed out my TP valve. My cpvc drain line was also glued, but as my water heater is in the attic and has a long drain line which directs the flow outside of the house. I ended up cutting the cpvc and installing a cpvc union below the new valve to make it easier the next time whenever either the TP valve or water heater is replaced. Other than that, I followed your steps exactly and will hopefully get a few more years out of my water heater.

Thankyou for giving me the confidence to fix this item and wonder if you have any thoughts about an issue I am dealing with. My heater is 15 years old, so most people react by immediately suggesting I spend $1500+ to have a new one installed. I don't understand why anybody does not want to try fixing something first, I would like to get a few more years out of mine. Initially the pilot light was going out, I relit it a few times over a few weeks until it would not stay lit after depressing the red button on top of the control valve. I replaced the thermocouple, it stays lit long enough to ignite the burner and provide hot water before going out again. For the last week I have been getting up several minutes earlier and lighting the pilot and turning on the burner which works to get a hot shower. I turned to what I believe is the next suspect, the gas control valve. It has taken me the last week of contacting Robertshaw, the valve manufacturer to be informed they do not carry a replacement and to contact the water tank manufacturer. I eventually was given a part number from AO Smith who had bought out American Standard, who had bought out the original company. Can you tell I am in C-19 quaranteen yet? Found one only available on ebay and am waiting for delivery this next week. This morning I noticed water coming from the T&P waste pipe, did the open the valve and close after a few seconds a couple of times, it kept running. I got the exact replacement of that and replaced it, thank you again. Not sure if the T&P valve failed or was just doing it's job because of the other issue, but I replaced it anyway and it no longer leaks. Am I in denial about needing a new tank or does it point to the gas control valve?
@AmplifyDIY4 жыл бұрын
Hey Colin! You're like me! Why go straight to full replacement when repair/maintenance can resolve the problem? I'm glad to hear your T&P replacement went smoothly, and that the new valve is working correctly. As for why your heat is not working: Usually that's a sign of a bad thermocouple, but you've already replaced that. The gas control valve may be the culprit as well, and it sounds like you'll be able to rule that out (or resolve the problem entirely) when the new part arrives. I have 2 other thoughts based on issues I've seen with my heaters in previous houses: 1) How much rust/sediment/junk is there down below the tank in where the burner is located? Is the burner itself still in good shape? I had a heater with similar issues to what you describe which were resolved by replacing the burner itself, which had rusted almost to oblivion. 2) Does your heater have any sort of status LED (blinking or solid) anywhere? Often heaters have a status indicator which will blink a certain pattern to indicate specific faults. Yours may be too old for that to have been common when it was made, but it's an idea to check on, if you have (or can get a hold of) the manual for your heater. Good luck!

In a panic I went to Home Depot at closing time and the plumbing guy (who has helped me out before) said it sounds like the valve and assured me the one he sells works with Rheem heaters. Sure enough replaced it no more leaks, did laundry, showers, dishes, it's been great! Thanks so much for this video. As a new home owner who has no clue how to do any of this stuff, I was thinking that leak meant my heater was failing and I’d have to replace the whole thing. Your explanation made this an easy project

Today, I replaced the TP valve watching your video. I used Rectorseal so I will wait until tomorrow to test "my job" because its a slow dry sealant Thanks!!

Thank you sooooooo much. I just replaced my hot water relief valve. All by myself!!!!! You made it very easy to understand and I thought to myself I can follow the direction to put together the sausage making machine and it is more complicated, I can do this! I will consult your channel in the future when trying new diy things. I am so elated, so many times I've been intimidated by "house repair problems."

I think you just diagnosed my mom's water heater. It's leaking water out of the pipe below the valve. I ruined her wood flooring around the area. Hopefully this works. Thank you.

Great video! OEM told me the valve couldn’t possibly be bad but taking this valve out showed the valve seat was missing a large chunk. Don’t know what caused it but the fix was much cheaper than I thought it would be

Dude, thank you so much. I have a combo laundry & pantry & hwh in a small room of the house we rent...I accidentally bopped the valve and freaked out bc of all the things you said at the beginning of the video! Haha. You made me feel much better about it, and I'm leaving a bucket under just in case, but it looks like it has stopped dripping! 😀 Thank youuuuu!

Thank you for this very helpful video. Just like you, our plumber that installed the water heater tank thought that sealing the pipes/ joints, that connects to the relief valve, with not only glue, but a metallic type glue. Seriously plumber dude?! So I had to file all the joints until it loosened up and finally freed it up, waste of almost an hour when the job could’ve been done long ago.

Thanks for this video! I only noticed the "test annually" notice when I prepared to flush my hot water heater. The valve on my 8 year old heater started leaking after the flush was done. Fortunately the part was covered by warranty. Unfortunately labor wasn't!

Great video, when I was a teenager my family's home was saved by the bell oops I mean T&P valve lol. While we were away hauling a load of cattle to the slaughterhouse, the 40 gallon electric water heater in our basement got extremely hot. We came home that night and I nearly scalded myself when I went to wash my hands. Dad went to investigate the problem and the valve has gushing water that was nearly steam and the basement felt like a sauna. We went to home depot to get two new thermostats, installed them, but now it kept overheating and popping the reset button. Turned out to be a bad element that shorted to the sheathing, and kept heating with 120 volts to the grounded tank after the thermostat shut off, by that time all the stores were closed and it was almost 11pm. So everyone had the privilege of taking a cold shower before catching some 😴
