why make uglier and more crowded your taskbar ? Not a smart way to replace your windows search. Especially you will lose the ability to find windows settings or programs you have to know the exe name to find it some cases its not called what the program is called. Use programs like flow launcher with built in indexing for windows settings and programs and everyting search is included, fusioned into one search bar with a keyboard shortcut to show up in middle of the screen. If you use programs like these super search programs you will never go back to anything less.

yes I was up to the bit where I would normally type "run" in my normal start menu but tried it on this everything one and it could not find my program. I had to uninstall after that. I may look at ur suggestion.

@@ChrisTitusTech Thanks for your work though. Very interesting to see a solution with much better indexing than windows. I do not search for this stuff but defo something I wanted. Too bad every win update resets the service settings you put on the indexing.

Everything is the first piece of software that I put on EVERY Windows box I own, for at least 10 years now. Widows built-in search function is wet garbage. Everything is lightweight, fast and flexible - even capable of indexing network drives. And best of all: FREE!

I also suggest using everything as an indexer, but using "flow launcher" as a bar. It's a KDE Style bar that can use everything search, and you can also setup plugins for other things, like searching youtube videos. It's pretty customizable

@@Ownsin Simply go to the plugin options, and search something like "search" I don't remember now because I'm not at home, but here you can swap from "Windows Indexer" to "Everything"

StartAllBack has a pretty decent, speedy search built-in that's much better than the default if you don't mind swapping your start menu to more of a Windows 7 style one too.

I have been using Everything Search (ES) for like 10 years now and still use it today. Love it. One thing to keep in mind that ES will only search for the file names and not the content of the file itself unless the latest ES software include such feature. Indexer will significantly take longer if it will index including the content of the files so I'm okay with searching the filename only as long the file is descriptive enough to show in the ES result list; and filename isn't too long for Windows to handle including the path.

This seem to make more sense when we talk about less powerfull boxes, with a reasonably modern computer that has at least 4 cores and 8Gb of RAM, this doesn't make that big of an impact and reduces functionality. Micro optimizations are fun, but I don't like giving up features for the sake of that. If you have all the execute commands memorized and don't use windows search for system tools/features and only cares about finding files everything is for you. I may be talking out of my behind for not exploring it fully, but I tried using it and quickly went back to default search, t was funny to me how paradoxical it is the tool call itself everything, but doesn't do all that windows search do, it has the search on NAS, but not system tools...

I like ultrasearch. It's crazy fast. It's how I woulda made a search tool if I coded it myself -- it just searches the file allocation tables directly. That obviously won't work on network drives, tho, but whatever. No indexing used whatsoever -- the file allocation table for the volume IS ALREADY an index. For everything else I just make shortcuts.

So this will break outlook search and other things. You may want to rethink this one. You could probably tweak the settings leaving it running where suitable, and just take it away from the UI and put your search replacement in there. (If everything also indexes in Outlook and so on I may be incorrect in assumptions here...)

Hi Chris you are using PowerToys which does include PowerToys-run and that seems to be really similar to flow launcher. I'm not sure which one is better but they seem to do the same thing. I did not play with neither flow launcher nor powertoys run, but powertoys run seems more capable out of the box at least in my config

Everything finds files that I can't see when using admin PowerShell or Windows Explorer! Since the path and file are always in the same spot, how can I call 'everything' from the admin command prompt and delete the file? (i.e. without opening the GUI, doing a search then deleting?) I tried exporting a file-list, then: everything filelist.efu filename but that didn't work
