That painted shell came out tops mate. Good job. For the 3D printed parts, what I find that helps to get rid of that texture is giving it a coat of MS or HS primer (easily found at auto parts stores) then giving it a nice wet sand with either 600 or 800 grit. Usually works really well. Great video.
@rriot5 жыл бұрын
I love that blue color you spray painted on, that's gonna be a really pretty GameBoy my man
@terracethornhill5 жыл бұрын
If there are flaws in the surface after you sand your primer, just lay another coat and sand it again. Repeat until perfect. If the flaw in the primed surface is really bad, give it a dab of finishing putty and sand it before applying another coat of primer. Ideally you want to have a finely sanded (min 600 grit) coat of primer with no bare spots. Also, try to always use a sanding block, it's next to impossible to get a flat surface with your fingers. Just glue paper onto different size dowels and blocks. If all you want to do is scuff a surface, scotchbrite pad works well at getting into hard to reach places.

Little tip to avoid sanding 3d printed parts to get a smooth finish. If you put some acetone on tissue then suspend your parts above it in a jar, the fumes will 'melt' the surface causing it to blend the bumps between the printed layers. 'DIY Perks' has a great video on it. Personally found a few of my prints feel stronger too! :D

Maybe you addressed this in another vid (or maybe it's understood), but the GBC PCB and shell battery terminals will work with the GBL. The (-) PCB one is a tad different on the GBL (the 3 claw prongs are a little more narrow and also not as rounded), but I was able to get the GBC one to work in it just fine.

You can use a brush-on resin to fill the stepping between layers. That'll make it easier to sand, and you won't weaken it. XTC Smooth-On is one.

If you put filler primer on the 3D printed parts before sanding it, it will be much smoother. Just look up "3D printer filler primer", and will find all kinds of stuff on it.

You could use something like aceton to smooth out the 3d printed part
@AlistairBrugsch5 жыл бұрын
Acetone smoothing has 2 problems. First it can only be used on ABS. If the parts are PLA it won't do anything. Second it usually distorts the shape of the item with warping or worse. For something that's being painted anyway, a bit of filler and sanding is going to be the way forward. Or use a printing service that uses SLS printing rather than FDM. Shapeways is the usual, well known one but they are v. Expensive and there are cheaper alternatives to them. But SLS print quality is much higher. It still needs a but of smoothing but it's more like a sandblasted texture rather than layer lines

I wondered if you know any method or replacement for It... Thank you very much in advance

600 grit.....yikes! I use tamiya filler for the deep dings. I then use 1500 grit and then 2000 grit on my GBLs. You don’t need to remove all the paint, just scuff it so the primer adheres better.

For metallic finishes in plastic they may use special paint finishes or even metal deposition, there's one type of chrome finish that is really cool and can be made at home, search for "diy chrome" or "fake chrome".
