Iron rot is a well known issue, I am surprised they regular bolts in the first place.

Should have used Stainless steel bolts

Rust wasn't necessarily the only reason to replace the bolts The wood on the ship gets damaged by different chemical reactions that were caused by the older steel bolts

The old screws/bolts are from the 60's when they took the ship out of the water.
