This was a good video and explains it well. I did not have to remove the pulley/ crankshaft. I was able to remove the belt and put it on by hand. Best way is to put it on the two end pulleysfirst and then do the middle ones with the tension arm. Also, you might have to turn the crankshaft/pulley by hand to get the belt in. Removing the decks makes the job easier.

The idler pully for my drive belt is fried, melted plastic. I can't get the bolt out to replace it. The bolt just keeps turning but won't come out of the pully. Any suggestions?

You may have to remove the fuel tank and then turn steering wheel to expose that bolt.

When I loosened the pulley bolt instead of the pulley bolt loosening the upper bolt on the fan came loose. The pulley bolt is righty tighty lefty loosey correct? I have a Craftsman T1600 tractor.

The manufacturer recommends that you have a service technician replace the ground drive belt in your model of garden tractor. We don't have a procedure for replacing the drive belt in that model. If you want to replace the drive belt yourself, you can follow the basic procedure shown in this video but it looks like you'll need to remove the transaxle fan or the electric clutch (for the blade belt) to install that ground drive belt.

Release the belt from the engine pulley, idler pulleys and belt guides and then try to work the belt off the transaxle pulley by reaching in through the back of the tractor frame. If this tip doesn’t help, post the model number of your riding mower and we’ll try to help you further.

Have You come across a riding mower with some sort of a (engine)drive pulley with a magnetic locking system? My neighbor has an Italian mower Castelgarden NJX98S Hydro year2008. It is supposed to engage mowing deck through a switch. And drive is operated with one pedal- backwards and forward. Engine starts up normally, but when one tries to either drive or engage a mowing deck, the engine dies out. And with the engine stopped the engine pulley can't be rotated by hand. I was told that it had acted up a few times in the last month or so and then worked normally again, but today it stopped working completely.

The electric clutch in that video fits a zero-turn riding mower but lawn tractors like the NJX98S may use a similar electric clutch to drive the blade belt and spin the blades. The problem with the engine shutting off when you engage the mower deck or try to drive the tractor could be caused by a failed seat switch as shown in this video: www.searspartsdirect.com/article/riding-lawn-mower-engine-dies-when-you-release-the-brake-video.html. The seat switch on that Castelgarden riding mower may be different than the one shown in the video. We don’t have a wiring diagram or parts information for that Italian riding mower but the ignition system may be similar to American models. I must have the most difficult drive belt ever to change on my t1600 (2013 I believe). Unbelievably difficult. 1 I can't get the crankshaft loose. So I bent back the tabs that held it on the crankshaft. Next, removed battery to get to back of belt. Well, it's under the transmission belt so that has to be removed. Well, can't do that without removing the pulleys for those because they are up against the sides of the mower. This. Absolutely. Sucks. Horrible design

After removing the deck You should be able to remove the old belt by pulling back on the tensioners and flat screwdriver. Pay attention to the routing if you don’t have a diagram, draw one. Takes a little patience but you don’t need to take the whole tractor apart as shown here.

You can use the basic procedure in this video to help you remove the drive pulley between the engine and the variable speed drive pulley. You'll need to pull out the battery, release the tension spring and remove the transmission pulley to take off the variable speed pulley. Be careful when removing the tension spring from the variable speed pulley system because that spring is under extremely tight tension. You can loop rope around the spring hook to pull the spring back and release from the frame. This is a fairly advanced repair that's intended to be completed by a service technician so the manufacturer doesn't include instructions in the owner's manual for replacing the ground drive pulleys. If you're not certain that you can safely complete the repair, have a service technician replace the belts. These tips may help you complete the repair if you want to replace the belts yourself. This is really tedious and time consuming. I changed my mower deck belt without removing the deck. I intend to change the drive belt without removing so many different parts. Next time design the tractor so it is ore simple to work on.😠
