blimey.. sounds like you know what you are talking about and are clearly a pro. shame you dont operate in the North wales area.. I have a valley of roughly the same length, and both roofers who came to look is quoting me in excess of 4k to replace it. .. trying to work out what is involved.

@@woodand thanks mate. £4K is pretty steep for a small valley, unless it’s a pain to get to and needs ALOT of scaffolding. I can travel sometimes, message me on WhatsApp if you have photos and an address and I may consider travelling. 07866424178.

There were some big holes in the felt on the right hand side of that valley. I would have stripped it back till I found sound felt in good condition. Also it's not good practice to lay lead on top of felt. The felt will move when it gets hot pulling the lead out of position over time. The felt goes under the valley boards not on top. That said nice lead work, 👍🔨 🇮🇪

Yeah, fair point made, thanks. The customer did not want major roof works done due to his budget, but just the leaking valley sorted. I did point out some other roof issues, but they would be for another time, I have to limit my work to what the customer is willing to pay for. But point taken on the felt under the lead, I know I don't always get everything right and am still learning myself. I know ideally it would have building paper underneath the lead and not felt, but thought it was better than nothing. Appreciate the comment and thanks for watching!

@@davesalter It's nice to see some constructive criticism being taken on board, without the usual defensive excuses people give and with a polite response. I guess everyone has their own way of doing things, but It looks a million miles better than it did before, and your attention to detail is a real credit to you.👍

HI I see this is a recent video , can I ask you is it still ok to use Lead for horizonal lead gutters ? Thanks :)
@davesalter
@davesalter 11 ай бұрын
Yes but should be code 5 minimum with steps going down to the outlet area. Or lead expansion joints welded in to a longer run of gutter.

Roofing Membrane should not go under lead as it can react badly. You should always use A1F building paper under lead unless there are penny gap boards when you have the option of using Geotextile.
@davesalter

Yes thanks. I was aware of using paper but couldn’t get any, I thought felt was better than nothing. Always learning myself still…

In what situation would you use a tilting fillet?
@davesalter
@davesalter Жыл бұрын
On a valley you wouldn’t use a fillet, but can use a regular tiling batten on either side of the valley to mould the lead to create an upstand. That would be my preferred option if doing a valley from scratch.

You don't have to welt the edges of the lead zero issues if done correct with correct cover
@davesalter
@davesalter 2 жыл бұрын
I can see that if its a steeper pitch but with shallow pitch like this roof it was getting over the edges. Cover could be better also so I get that point. Welts would stop leaks in this case though.

The lead used wasn't wide enough more than the lack of welt, good work anyway.

@@taffytop was just going to say same thing about lead been short of width . I wouldn't be surprised if it's leaking from that felt roof too you shouldn't of been able to peel felt back as easy as that like

@@davesalter My experience with roofers is they are either stupid, or assume I'm stupid and try and suggest work way outside what is needed, and probably not dealing with the actual issue. Really not a surprise more people are going diy these days. Your videos are evidence of the huge amount of scrappy trade work from the past which you are dealing with. One guy even wanted to lay felt over old lead..
