Build With A&E

4 жыл бұрын

Check out Will and Rick as they crack on this slate re-roof at one of our projects in Leamington Spa. In this first of a two-parter they begin the work on the first side of the roof stripping the felt and lath, replacing it and then fitting some TLX Gold insulation. Then Will goes into detail showing how he goes about fitting a lead valley. Watch for plenty of tips, tricks and advice on how to slate re-roof. Plenty to get yourself stuck into and perfect viewing if you're self-isolating. Stay safe and have a great weekend all!
A huge thank you to our show sponsors, MKM Building Supplies. We highly recommend you check out their website for all your construction material needs!

If you want to make the slating up the valley easier for yourself. Next time widen the timber on your valley with a battern going up each side before your normal roof batterns. This will allow you more room for nailing your slates rather than risk having to nail into the lead. Good video 👍

Nice video, was watching as have to repair a valley that has lead down it but has old felt that crumbles. Was wondering if you put felt under the lead, so brought a book and it says no felt under lead as the sun can heat it up and melt it 😬 is this the case? The book looked about 20 years old but did show some breathable felt in it. Can you get high temp felts now days ? Thanks

why no batten running parralel with valley ? it really helps with fixing points for the cut slates that form the valley .. just saying ..
@BuildWithAE
@BuildWithAE 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ivor Every slate including cut slates always have 2 nails in. There’s no need to put a battern parallel as long as you you have 2 fixings and it doesn’t compromise the quality of the roof. 👍

Good informative video. Just one question regarding batten spacing of 200mm. Would that spacing of 200mm be sufficient for any size slate or is 200mm specific to the length of the slate you were fixing to the existing roof of video?.....

Why so many nails when I was training I was told as little nails as possible because lead moves in heat and cold so it can tear if u put to many nails in it because it can expand and contract
@BuildWithAE
@BuildWithAE 4 жыл бұрын
Hi James, everyone has there own practice and views I believe when you think about lead it’s expansion and contraction with hot and cold might or might not havebmore stresses or not. But in the many years of doing this I have never had to go back with split lead. Thanks for watching 👍

Well made videos , but that leadwork was painful to watch trapping the lead in and puncturing it with some many nails where water is going to run under . Just an easier way and leak proof way is up the edge of your battens at the valley if they are 25 x 50 install a batten at 19 x 50 or similiar something shallower than your 25mm height so you can dress the lead into the timber but still let’s the slate come over into the valley bud . Only nail at lead head
@BuildWithAE
@BuildWithAE 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Parky, I've done 100's of lead valleys and have never been called back for 1. However, I have been called to people's jobs to repair lead that's slipped out of valleys because there's not enough fixings in it. If you watch the video you'll see I dip the copper nail in mastic to create a tight seal. Again, this is a video showing how I personally go about doing it. Your method will work for you and my mine works for me. Many thanks bud 👍
@richierich91
@richierich91 4 жыл бұрын
As parky has stated that's the way I was taught how to do valleys. Nail on the head only. So all you are relying on to stop rain getting in is your mastic.each to there own I guess but apart from that good work

Why don't you guys use contra battens over there in england? I learned it is best to keep off your battens of any felt or membrane. Water condensation is inevitable and if your felt is touching your battens they might rot away.
