This shows how to replace a metal stud on a Schwalbe Winter Marathon tyre. It uses a 5/32" (4mm) socket and a handle instead of the propriety tool.

8 years on and still gold, thank you! The 4mm socket idea was exactly what I needed since getting a Schwalbe tool in the UK is nigh-on impossible now

Very useful video, thanks. Great tip about the socket. My SMWs have about 800 kmh on them now, just put 5 studs in the rear and 2 in the front tyre. The old studs are showing no sign of wear. That’s despite most use being on icy roads in the morning and no ice on the roads going back home in the evening. Would add, it’s much easier to replace studs if the tyre is inflated.

I have commuted with these exact tyres for two winters and only ever lost studs in the rear one - about six. This has led me to believe that skidding the rear wheel (which I did several times for fun) caused them to be levered out. Total ridden distance was about 800km, so I'm more or less a beginner with spike tyres. Would like to read other people's experiences with losing studs.

yes, any kind of dragging a locked tyre will cause studs to pull out.

You say 5/32 on the video (which is a conman size), yet your have 3/32 on your description. Thanks for the video.

+Daniel Rice Thanks. I've updated it and also put in the metric equivalent.

How difficult is this to do? If I had a pair if unstudded tires, would I regret trying to add studs to them (some 240 total)? Should I just buy studded tires?

You specifically need Schwalbe studded tires to use their kit as the tires are predrilled or preformed to work specifically with their studs. You can DIY a tire but I'd only recommend it if you are really hard up for cash as it's quite time-consuming. I'm watching this video because I'm about halfway through a stud kit and it's really hard to get the studs to insert! But studded tires are worth it in icy conditions.

thanks for the reply! I asked because I have a set of Schwalbe winter tires that are un-studded but have the holes for studs... @@garretteverett2613
