Replacing a thermostat on a 2004 Volkswagon VW Beetle

Just a quick run through with a tip on how to do it. It is no where as hard as it looks.

@@eurokevin I am super glad. When I did it and seen how tight it was I said I got to make a quick video. The actual procedure requires the removal of several things. Which means more money for new gaskets and so on.

I’ve done a few of these but nothing was worse then my first time doing one of these. I didn’t blow the coolant out the lower bolt hole. In return I thought the bolt seated all the way down and was tight. It basically hydro locked the bolt. Started it up and leaked immediately. Took it back apart and blew the coolant out and put back together and boom it was fixed. Needless to say if I am doing any cooling system components now I blow out all the holes. I hate doing a job twice.

if i have a 06 with a 2.5, do I have to lubricate the o ring with Antifreeze ? Guess who has the intake back on (only took it off 3x times tonight for dropped bolts, screws). -- if there is a small part in flat section of the thermostat (the saturn ring), where does that go ? 6 o clock or 12 ? Thannks

That is for the steam passage. it goes at the 12 o clock position..Or there abouts....It is best to lube it first. it helps it stay in and make a good seal against the housing. but you do not "have" to

@@CamaroTime awesome, thank you !! It did put it at 12 o'clock position and also go lucky as the gasket did not move, but get it sideways or pinched, you get to do the whole job ALL over again ! Thank you for letting me know.
