I have a question, I recently tried to do a self repair and used one of those channel flanged Wax rings, and the new one wouldn't sit all the way down into the flange like the old one. My dad said it would be fine but.. I have a sneaking suspicion.. not only that but.. when I compressed it, It didn't feel right compressing the ring with the toilet bowl.. When I lifted it back up I noticed that the wax ring and shattered.. does this mean the wax ring is pretty much junked up now? Should I get a new one? How do I prevent the wax ring from breaking into pieces?

I have a problem toilet that keeps clogging so I recently augered it every which way and pulled out about an inch of wax in the auger. Nothing else came out of the toilet. It refuses to be plunged because it's not a full clog but it also won't flush. Pulling the toilet today but I'm thinking either the installer had a bad wax ring placement off center causing a partial clog or some wax has fallen down the drain causing a partial clog. I seriously hope it’s not a chunk of wax in my drain system. Nothing else is giving me draining issues so I’m hoping the clog is either due to a bad wax ring or the clog is just out of reach of my 3 ft auger. I’ll know later today.

I truly wish, I had seen your video before I fixed my toilet, since now it is leaking and Ichanged the wax ring. Since the floor was higher than flush with my floor, I used on one regular wax ring. I did not change the bolts, they seemed waxy but okay, and maybe I did not press down on the wax enough, I am not sure. I surely did not putz with the wax, as it is pretty gross. I do not want to start again, so I am thinking, to pushdown on the toilet, and tighten the bolts from the toilet, maybe that will be successful. Bigger issue, I am in South Florida, and did not do the job in one day, as the tile got wet under the tile, and it needed to dry, so even with covering the toilet pipe hole, I was getting palmetto bugs coming up and out, and yikes that is a nightmare. suggestion?

Replaced the wax ring on my toilet but toilet seems to not flush very well now. Any ideas on what the issue could be?
@ThatFixItGuy3 жыл бұрын
I would run a auger down the toilet. The wax may have not smushed good and is causing a partial clog. If you get a little wax back on the auger that is for sure the issue. This is a start

What should I do if the toilet doesn't seem to be flushing as well as before after replacing the wax ring? Very slow flow down the drain even when dumping a bucket full of water down the toilet.
@ThatFixItGuy3 жыл бұрын
My guess is that you have a partial stoppage. You could try a toilet auger, but it could be further down the line.

If you out chaulk and later have a leak how would you know? Some plumbers say not to put chalk at the end
@ThatFixItGuy3 жыл бұрын
I always leave a gap in the back of the toilet not caulked for that purpose. You always want to know if the toilet is leaking. Caulk in my opinion is so that debris and urine do not get under the toilet. Thank you for your comments

Not sure if you’ll see this, but I’m going to share my experience. I installed a new toilet about 5 - 6 weeks ago. All was great for abt 2 weeks and then it started leaking in the same spot as this video. It was spreading, but very slowly. Decided to go ahead and cut the vinyl I recently replaced. I found a good amount of water, but no obvious sign of where it was coming from. I dried the area up good and then flushed the toilet numerous times. Nothing. Waited hours and then tried flushing again. Still nothing. Granted it’s only been a single day since drying it, but I figured I’d get at least a little water from the leak. Nothing at all. After trouble shooting everything, I feel like it’s the ring. I didn’t know there were two different sizes of rings. The ring I used came with American standard I bought. The thing that got me was how soft the ring was. I’m far from an expert, but this felt abnormally soft. Aren’t they supposed to have some thickness to them? Mailable but firm, right? I feel like this is my problem. How do you know what size is right? What abt using two together? I haven’t bought anything yet nor have I pulled the toilet up. Waiting to see if this leak pops up or not. Edit: forgot to mention. I have the exact set up as you. Cast iron flange. Except mine has a chipped part where one of the bolts goes. Had to by a adapter as well. The toilet rocked ever so slightly so I had to put a very small shim to level it. Caulked all the way around it. Thx in advance for any advice. And go Gators! 😁🐊
@ThatFixItGuy2 жыл бұрын
If the wax is too soft you can put it in the fridge or freezer for a little bit. That will firm it right up. You don’t want it too hard either. Room temp is usually good. If you have any rock that will eventually cause a leak. American standard wax is a bit smaller in diameter, but usually has a good thickness. If you think it is not enough you can get a jumbo wax that is equal to like 1 1/2 wax. Work’s good. I have put two wax together as well you just want to make sure the are together good before setting the toilet. Is your flange set low in the floor? Send me a picture on Facebook if you like after you pull the toilet.

@@ThatFixItGuy So it’s been several days now and still not a drop of water. Is it plausible that the ring took a little extra time to set completely. That’s the only thing I can think of. ‘Bout to patch up the vinyl and be done with it. Hopefully the leak doesn’t come back. If it does I will pull it all and take a picture.

The wax less type didnt work for me because my drain pipe below the flange was only 2 inches and they didn't fit. 3 trips to the store and landed on standard wax anyway.

I remember on the older toilets there was plumber's putty in the caps of the toilet so they wouldn't move and it prevents them from humidity and rust. I only see 2 nuts in my toilet bolts?

I noticed you put wax ring with funnel on bottom and then regular wax ring on top; however, in internet and other youtube, they put wax ring with funnel on top instead. I am confused on which one is the correct way and I wonder there is a situation that one is better than the others. Thanks for the video. 👍

OK I’m pretty handy but I’ve never heard of anybody using two wax rings… i’m not saying you can’t because obviously you’re doing it however I wanted to watch a video where you put one wax ring on I mean wouldn’t the thicker wax rings be what you use for this toilet? I believe you know what you’re doing but I need to make sure I’m doing what I’m doing right.
@ThatFixItGuy2 жыл бұрын
A thick wax ring was not going to be thick enough in this situation it would have just barely touched and I did not want to take that chance. If it was a different style of flange I would have built up the flange and used a regular wax ring, but kinda old school.

Your toilet flange is level with the tile that is too low you should've just added the proper spacer to bring it approximately 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch above floor level then there's no use to pile all that extra wax there which can lead to failure

The other videos said not to caulk because you wouldn’t be able to see a leak.
@ThatFixItGuy4 жыл бұрын
You don't caulk the whole way around. Always leave a gap without caulk in the back of the toilet. Males tend to pee down the front of the toilet no matter how hard they try no to. In our case my son is only 5 and he has not mastered this yet. Caulk keeps a large amount of pee from going under the toilet and causing a ugly smelly situation. Hope this helps.
